So Much More Than Fires and Theft

Largely peaceful protests in the Bay Area and across the country over the weekend were mixed with episodes of people breaking into stores and lighting fires.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, people took to the streets all across the country to protest police violence and demand racial justice after a Minneapolis police officer killed George Floyd.

While breaking into stores and vandalizing pales in comparison to centuries of oppression of black and brown people in the United States, it sure distracts from predominantly nonviolent protests – while giving more ammunition to a flawed hard-line approach.
