As President Trump’s deadline for ending DACA passes, 700,000 undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children are at increased risk of deportation.

Court rulings have prevented the Trump administration from fully ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, and a more permanent fix remains bogged down in Congress. The government isn’t accepting new DACA applications, and advocates say, even though current DACA recipients can apply for a renewal, they run the risk of being detained if their status now lapses and their applications are still being processed.

Trump began his campaign for president by saying, “when Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best,” accusing undocumented immigrants of being rapists and drug dealers.

Referring to people protected by DACA the president has also said, “you have some absolutely, incredible kids,” and “I love these kids.”
