Debate over San Francisco's Pioneer Monument has been reignited amid national efforts to remove Confederate statues. This isn't the first time the Pioneer Monument has sparked a debate. Created in 1894, one part of the expansive statue features a Native American on the ground below a missionary and a Spanish vaquero.

If people want to remove statues that offend or glorify injustice, one option is to make them available for the public to see in another venue, like a museum. That is a way to avoid wiping away history and risk forgetting the sins of the past.
