Fifty years before “Black Lives Matter” was a rallying cry on Twitter, it was the central philosophy of the Black Panthers during the 1960s and 70s. The Panthers, who were founded in Oakland, provided food, medicine and security to impoverished black communities across the country. A new documentary, “The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution,” takes an in-depth look at the organization, including infighting among its members, its treatment of women and ultimately, the group’s derailment. Filmmaker Stanley Nelson joins Forum to discuss his film, which premieres Tuesday on PBS, and why the Panthers’ message is still relevant today.

Guests:

Stanley Nelson, documentary filmmaker; most recent film is "The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution"; previous films include "Freedom Riders" and "The Murder of Emmett Till,"
