Berkeley-based perfumer Mandy Aftel writes that aromas “are a magic carpet we can ride to hidden worlds”. In her new book, “Fragrant: The Secret Life of Scent,” Aftel guides readers through the histories of what she calls the five landmark scents from around the world: cinnamon, mint, frankincense, ambergris and jasmine.
