Thanks entirely to nearly 5,000 generous donors, KQED successfully concluded Campaign 21. That’s 5,000 members of our community - our neighbors, friends and colleagues across the Bay Area and beyond that chose to contribute a meaningful gift, over and above their annual support. Each gift is a signal of support to KQED and what we offer: a community-supported alternative to commercial media with the goal to change lives for the better and help individuals and communities achieve their full potential.\u003c/span>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left\">\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">KQED has transformed to better serve you, our valued listeners, readers and viewers. We launched Campaign 21 to fund digital production and distribution, grow our reporting teams and renovate our headquarters. This installation is being made by Barbara's Embroidery, a custom embroidery shop located in the Potrero Hill district in San Francisco. Barbara Zerbe has been creating, sewing, and embroidering for over 50 years; with over 20 years on Tajima machines. KQED’s headquarters will not only be the place where we work, but also a place to host live programs and partner with our community. This installation is being made by Barbara's Embroidery, a custom embroidery shop located in the Potrero Hill district in San Francisco. Barbara Zerbe has been creating, sewing, and embroidering for over 50 years; with over 20 years on Tajima machines. The C21 Donor Wall will be prominently located in the upper lobby, where all visitors travel through on their way to reception, and a space designed for donor receptions and gatherings before public programs in the new Commons. There are also opportunities to recognize donors on our new state-of-the art radio studios, video edit suites, voice over booths and other production spaces.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">For those of you that have already given to Campaign 21, we hope you’ll come and see your name in community with your fellow donors! Campaign 21 investments will allow KQED Education to continuously find new ways to help the youth of today become responsible, tech-savvy storytellers and media consumers. \u003c/span>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Education Events Manager Janelle Kim explains,\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">“One thing we’re focusing on now is the potential for broader distribution and plugging youth voice into our regular shows throughout the year - using a student voice for the regularly aired \u003c/span>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">Perspectives\u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or using a student-created piece on \u003c/span>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">The California Repor\u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u003cem>t\u003c/em>, for example. "content": "\u003cp>As our campaign goal starts to come into view we’re reflecting on how many members of our donor community have been crucial to the success of Campaign 21. Whether you helped plan major changes for the future in 2017 or only recently gave a gift, you’re an integral part of our success. Anne Etgen and Greg Kieber are one such couple, known for their support of not only this campaign, but also as members of both our Legacy Society and Sustainer member program. We asked Anne and Greg to share a little about what compels them to give so generously, and what they are looking forward to in 2022.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">KQED: What fuels your commitment to philanthropy in the Bay Area?\u003c/span>\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">After long careers in IT (Greg) and scientific research (Anne), we are committed to giving back \u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">by supporting the community where we live. Therefore, we choose philanthropic organizations \u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">in the Bay Area that help ensure everyone in the region thrives. No one in a community as \u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">prosperous and innovative as ours should go hungry or homeless. In addition, everyone needs \u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">access to news and information that is fact‐based and unbiased.\u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">KQED: Why do you support KQED and do you have any favorite programs?\u003c/span>\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">Providing in‐depth news coverage and a wide array of arts and culture, historical, educational \u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">and scientific programming to the public is expensive; we want to make sure that these \u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">resources continue to be available to everyone. KQED’s wide range of podcasts, radio and \u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">television programs are both informative and entertaining. After listening to or watching news \u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">programming on KQED, we always come away feeling that the world makes a little more sense \u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">and that we understand an issue from a variety of perspectives. Locally produced programming \u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">like \u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">Forum\u003c/span>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\"> engages and stimulates on a wide range of topics. On television, we love \u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">Check, \u003c/span>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">Please! Whether you helped plan major changes for the future in 2017 or only recently gave a gift, you’re an integral part of our success. Anne Etgen and Greg Kieber are one such couple, known for their support of not only this campaign, but also as members of both our Legacy Society and Sustainer member program. We asked Anne and Greg to share a little about what compels them to give so generously, and what they are looking forward to in 2022.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">KQED: What fuels your commitment to philanthropy in the Bay Area?\u003c/span>\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">After long careers in IT (Greg) and scientific research (Anne), we are committed to giving back \u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">by supporting the community where we live. Therefore, we choose philanthropic organizations \u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">in the Bay Area that help ensure everyone in the region thrives. No one in a community as \u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">prosperous and innovative as ours should go hungry or homeless. In addition, everyone needs \u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">access to news and information that is fact‐based and unbiased.\u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">KQED: Why do you support KQED and do you have any favorite programs?\u003c/span>\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">Providing in‐depth news coverage and a wide array of arts and culture, historical, educational \u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">and scientific programming to the public is expensive; we want to make sure that these \u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">resources continue to be available to everyone. KQED’s wide range of podcasts, radio and \u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">television programs are both informative and entertaining. After listening to or watching news \u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">programming on KQED, we always come away feeling that the world makes a little more sense \u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">and that we understand an issue from a variety of perspectives. Locally produced programming \u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">like \u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">Forum\u003c/span>\u003ci>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\"> engages and stimulates on a wide range of topics. On television, we love \u003c/span>\u003c/i>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">Check, \u003c/span>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">Please! Adhamina teaches about sustainability at U.C. Berkeley and Stanford University and was featured by the 2017 \u003ci>Pledge 1%\u003c/i> “Women Who Lead” for creating change within her community and workplace. We asked Adhamina to walk us through some of the green highlights of the new 2601 Mariposa St. building and why sustainability matters to the community.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp> \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>KQED: \u003ci> What are the environmental advantages in KQED's choice to redesign our current building rather than move to a new location?\u003c/i>\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u003cstrong>AR:\u003c/strong> Building reuse is the most effective strategy to reduce the environmental impact of buildings because it avoids the burden of the manufacturing process of new construction materials. It is common to talk about the carbon emissions of an operational building, associated mostly with its energy use and refrigerants releases. However, the embodied carbon of a building is as important as its operational carbon. The embodied carbon is the sum of all the greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the mining, harvesting, processing, manufacturing, transportation and installation of building materials. Reusing an existing structure greatly reduces the need of new materials manufacturing/install and therefore, the overall carbon footprint of the project.\u003c/span>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong> KQED: \u003ci>A lot of attention has been paid this past year to ventilation systems and how they can help keep people safe from airborne virus’. Did anything pivot during building planning? \u003c/i>\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u003cstrong>AR:\u003c/strong> The building design included enhanced indoor air quality strategies before the pandemic--higher ventilation rates, CO2 monitoring and high-efficiency filters (MERV 13 or above). Procuring good indoor air quality to sustain the health and wellbeing of the building occupants has been a critical component of green buildings for many years. COVID-19 has recently brought attention to ventilation systems, but mostly because there are many outdated buildings that have not been updated to current standards.\u003c/span>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u003c/span>\u003cstrong>KQED: \u003ci>How does the KQED LEED building fit into the San Francisco landscape? \u003c/i>\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u003cstrong>AR:\u003c/strong> The City of San Francisco requires that all commercial buildings over 25,000 square feet are built to LEED Gold standards, so San Francisco has many LEED certified buildings, but that fact alone does not take away the merit of designing/building a LEED certified project. We just happen to be in a very environmentally-minded city. "content": "\u003cp> \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">Like so many of you, the KQED staff have been working in isolated conditions for almost a year now. As we all start to look forward to this extraordinary time in our lives coming to a close, KQED has the added excitement of not only returning to work in person, but also returning to our fully renovated headquarters, the final part of Campaign 21. In anticipation of our next chapter, we asked six staff members what they were most looking forward to about our future home.\u003c/span>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp> \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the new Mariposa studios, our IT and facilities and design teams worked hand in hand with the newsroom to envision how the studios and audio production spaces could be best designed for our production needs in the future. One of the key designs was to re-envision some of the recording studios to make them feel less like stuffy studios and more like \"spaces\" where multiple people can work together to collaborate and record audio. The idea was centered on multiple voices recording podcasts or interviews, but the ideas and concepts can be extended to a lot of the audio work we do. I can't wait to see how our audio production teams work in these spaces.\u003c/span>\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: right\">\u003cspan style=\"color: #2b2b2b;font-size: 20px\">Ethan Lindsey, Executive Editor\u003c/span>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp> \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">Broadcasting in an acoustically perfect booth while being able to see and communicate with my collaborators will be key in improving the quality and performance of newscasts.\u003c/span>\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: right\">\u003cspan style=\"color: #2b2b2b;font-size: 20px\">Brian Watt, Morning News Anchor \u003c/span>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp> \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">I’m excited for the public to experience KQED events in real life at The Commons. We haven’t come together as one big group since even before COVID sent us into lockdown actually – it’s been since the summer of 2019 when we moved out of old Mariposa. A lot of our work takes shape and happens in our meetings and hallway conversations, so being all together again is going to be a welcome change. A lot of our work depends on collaboration and that depends on being able to see each other and meet up -- as both one big team and also as mini teams. So going back will be like a reunion in a cool new space that will give us room for the reporting, editing, information-gathering, sound recording, and collaboration that helps us produce the stories we do.\u003c/span>\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: right\">\u003cspan style=\"color: #2b2b2b;font-size: 20px\"> Vinnee Tong, Director of News\u003c/span>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp> \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">Visitors to KQED will be greeted by a large media wall located on the first floor lobby. This installation will highlight national and local productions, as well as promote upcoming live events. This will be a key touchpoint for us to showcase the work, and services, we provide to our communities. I’ve always wondered what it would be like to host our very own “TED talk!” \u003c/span>\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp> \u003c/p>\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: right\">\u003cspan style=\"color: #2b2b2b;font-size: 20px\">Zaldy Serrano, Creative Director\u003c/span>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp> \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">The new space will make it so much more inviting for the community we serve in the Education Department – teachers and students. We often host trainings and events and it will make such a difference to have a beautiful new space where they feel welcome. As we all start to look forward to this extraordinary time in our lives coming to a close, KQED has the added excitement of not only returning to work in person, but also returning to our fully renovated headquarters, the final part of Campaign 21. In anticipation of our next chapter, we asked six staff members what they were most looking forward to about our future home.\u003c/span>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp> \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the new Mariposa studios, our IT and facilities and design teams worked hand in hand with the newsroom to envision how the studios and audio production spaces could be best designed for our production needs in the future. One of the key designs was to re-envision some of the recording studios to make them feel less like stuffy studios and more like \"spaces\" where multiple people can work together to collaborate and record audio. The idea was centered on multiple voices recording podcasts or interviews, but the ideas and concepts can be extended to a lot of the audio work we do. We haven’t come together as one big group since even before COVID sent us into lockdown actually – it’s been since the summer of 2019 when we moved out of old Mariposa. A lot of our work takes shape and happens in our meetings and hallway conversations, so being all together again is going to be a welcome change. A lot of our work depends on collaboration and that depends on being able to see each other and meet up -- as both one big team and also as mini teams. So going back will be like a reunion in a cool new space that will give us room for the reporting, editing, information-gathering, sound recording, and collaboration that helps us produce the stories we do.\u003c/span>\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: right\">\u003cspan style=\"color: #2b2b2b;font-size: 20px\"> Vinnee Tong, Director of News\u003c/span>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp> \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">Visitors to KQED will be greeted by a large media wall located on the first floor lobby. This installation will highlight national and local productions, as well as promote upcoming live events. This will be a key touchpoint for us to showcase the work, and services, we provide to our communities. I’ve always wondered what it would be like to host our very own “TED talk!” \u003c/span>\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp> \u003c/p>\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: right\">\u003cspan style=\"color: #2b2b2b;font-size: 20px\">Zaldy Serrano, Creative Director\u003c/span>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp> \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">The new space will make it so much more inviting for the community we serve in the Education Department – teachers and students. We often host trainings and events and it will make such a difference to have a beautiful new space where they feel welcome. The long-planned renovation of our space started in 2019 and provided the unique opportunity for KQED to upgrade our technology to both improve current services and be better prepared for the future of broadcasting. As part of the renovations supported by Campaign 21, decades-old audio and video technology are being replaced with new digital production systems that support the cutting edge work already being produced by our content teams in News, Arts, Science and Education. New technology linking all of our future Radio Suites as well as new public event spaces like the Lobby and Commons will allow for expanded audio and video production opportunities, not just for KQED staff, but the community at large. The upgrade to a sophisticated high speed network instead of traditional video and audio cabling and equipment is best compared to when media transitioned from video tape to digital files in terms of quality and efficiency.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>New technological upgrades include:\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cul>\n\u003cli>\u003cstrong>The Commons\u003c/strong>: Our largest live event space featuring a 35' Projection Screen with 4K Laser quality and Surround Sound Cinema System.\u003c/li>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cli>\u003cstrong>Newly imagined Primary Video Studio \u003c/strong>with large green screen and virtual set upgrades.\u003c/li>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cli>\u003cstrong>Video Production Control Room \u003c/strong>where producers, directors, and tech ops staff work together to create sophisticated video content.\u003c/li>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cli>\u003cstrong>Tech Center\u003c/strong>, created in 2015 with future needs in mind, now being fully realized to allow us to consolidate tech infrastructure to a single central location.\u003c/li>\n\u003c/ul>\n\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some of the most important tenets of KQED are connectivity and accessibility and that starts at our home base.
