"content": "\u003cp>Flashback to 1969, the year the performance artist known as Hibiscus founded the Cockettes, a theater collective that requires not just one adjective, but several, to fully describe its aesthetic: avant-garde, psychedelic, hippie, genderfluid and glitter-covered, among others. The Cockettes’ history is brief but glorious: performing regularly at San Francisco’s Palace Theater, their show became a must-see experience of the city’s gay scene. After a disastrous attempt to break into the New York theater scene, the group disbanded in 1972.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Their influence is visible in David Bowie’s glam, in the musical kitsch of \u003ci>The Rocky Horror Picture Show\u003c/i>, and in the careers of former members \u003ca href=\"https://www.kqed.org/arts/13854644/how-the-world-caught-up-to-sylvester\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sylvester\u003c/a> and Divine. That’s the hope behind \u003ci>actions vent ascending frequencies\u003c/i>, the latest incarnation of a 2004 project by assume vivid astro focus (the alias of New York artist Eli Sudbrack). A psychedelic-tinged outdoor roller-skating rink with a DJ booth at its center turns the Fort Mason parking lot into a platform for both free public skating and programming organized by the Church of 8 Wheels and Bay Area Derby. "content": "\u003cp>When Kevin Allen and DJ Basta debut their new single “Seed 05” \u003ca href=\"https://www.eventbrite.com/e/dj-basta-kevin-allen-seed-05-limited-edition-record-release-tickets-60136122762\">this Friday at the Spirit Haus Gallery in West Oakland\u003c/a>, it’ll be a record release party—a \u003cem>very limited\u003c/em> record release party.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>While “Seed 05” will eventually be available on streaming platforms, 20 copies of the single will be distributed on Friday. The records were cut individually, in real time, on Petra-Fi Records’ 80 year-old record lathe.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The records are made of polycarbonate material that purposefully wears after a certain number of plays. That may sound counterintuitive, but Allen theorizes that it’ll inspire people to actually pay attention when they listen to the five-minute, three-song record. And after that, people can hang it on the wall as an art piece.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This record is a part of a series from DJ Basta’s label\u003ca href=\"https://rootsandbranches.bandcamp.com/\"> Roots & Branches\u003c/a>, which is creating a 10-piece set known as the \u003cem>Record Box\u003c/em>. The brothers, who like to call themselves “ex-soulmates,” specialize in strange circumstances with an emotional core; their first film, \u003cem>This is John\u003c/em>, is a seven-minute short about a man who, in the process of trying to record an outgoing message on his answering machine, has a breakdown. Haven’t we all been there?\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Now, the brothers Duplass have written a memoir, \u003cem>Like Brothers\u003c/em>, detailing their relationship, their filmmaking process and their career highlights, including the HBO series \u003cem>Togetherness\u003c/em>. "content": "\u003cp>The traditional marker of a fiftieth anniversary is gold, but this year, \u003ca href=\"http://canyoncinema.com/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canyon Cinema\u003c/a> celebrates five decades of existence with all things silver screen. Incorporated as a film distribution business in 1967 by a group of avant-garde, underground and experimental filmmakers (among them, \u003ca href=\"https://ww2.kqed.org/arts/2016/10/28/bruce-conner-artist-who-twice-declared-himself-dead-lives-on-at-sfmoma/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bruce Conner\u003c/a>), Canyon Cinema is now a nonprofit foundation dedicated to the preservation and presentation of non-commercial artist-made moving images. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003ca href=\"http://canyoncinema50.org/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canyon Cinema 50\u003c/a>, a year-long program celebrating the organization’s past, present and future, kicks off at 7pm on Feb. 15, with “\u003ca href=\"http://canyoncinema50.org/events/upcoming-events/2-15-17-inside-and-out-more-or-less-of-me-presented-by-mark-street/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inside and Out: More or Less of Me\u003c/a>,” a presentation by New York-based artist Mark Street at California College of the Arts. Street’s work ranges from material explorations of 16mm film to urban “essays” to an upcoming documentary tracing economic cycles in North Dakota oil country. “I’m inspired by filmmakers whose artistic journey begins with their quotidian life and takes us into uncharted terrain,” Street says. By making a weather balloon a projection surface or putting a 16mm projector in motion, Hammer’s works question the formal arrangement between projector, audience and screen, sometimes forcing viewers to negotiate new vantage points lest they miss out on the action.
