For the first time in its 56-year history, the Exploratorium has announced an open call for its next artist in residence.

The San Francisco science and art museum has hosted an artist-in-residence program since 1974, with alumni including Ruth Asawa, Brian Eno and Ned Kahn. Artists for the program have always been chosen internally — until now.

Applications for the 2025-2026 artist-in-residence program opened today, April 15, and will continue to be accepted through May 30.

In addition to support for projects and travel, artists in residence receive access to the Exploratorium’s facilities on Pier 15, as well as the input and expertise of its staff. The position includes a $15,000 annual stipend.

Collaboration and innovation are key aspects of each Exploratorium residency, which typically lasts for two years. According to the Exploratorium’s guidelines, applicants to the the program “should be inherently curious and deeply invested in inquiry as a part of their practice.”

Projects that have resulted from the residency span the worlds of theater, film, immersive art, walking tours and the online space. The Exploratorium’s current artist in residence, Dr. Catie Cuan, is both a roboticist and dancer.

“Art has been fundamental to the Exploratorium since its founding,” project director Ann Meisinger said in a statement, “and we’re delighted to expand our artist community and connect with curious artists who share our passion for exploring the world through asking questions, experimentation, and exploring perception.”

Informational sessions are planned on April 24 and May 16 for interested applicants. More information can be found via the Exploratorium’s site.
