San Francisco Opera

Sondra Radvanovsky stars in the season opener of Vincenzo Bellini’s Norma at the Opera House, while Opera in the Park offers its annual free performance at Sharon Meadow in Golden Gate Park. Meanwhile, in San Jose, Verdi’s Rigoletto opens with Matthew Hanscom and Evan Brummel alternating as the revenge-seeking jester.

‘Mingus Remixed’

Barry “Shabaka” Henley portrays the ferociously passionate jazz bassist and composer in this unique intersection of music, dance and theater, telling the story from the perspective of Mingus’ deathbed. A quartet performs Mingus’ brilliant, fiery music in this show directed by the East Bay’s Delroy Lindo, making it a triumphant return of the Lorraine Hansberry Theatre.  Read more

Mission Creek Festival

The Mission Creek Oakland Music & Arts Festival offers a stellar lineup of some 70 indie musicians performing in various venues all around Oakland. Performers include Foxtails Brigade (pictured), Bill Baird, the Bye Bye Blackbirds, Blank Tapes and many, many more. Throw in art shows, films, a square dance and a writing showcase, and you’ve got a successful recipe for a week’s worth of cheap thrills. More info

The Tim & Eric Show with Dr. Steve Brule

Join the two cuckoo-bananas creators of Tim & Eric Awesome Show Great Job!, one of Adult Swim’s original vanguard shows, as they bring their absurdist sensibilities to the Warfield. They share the stage with their long-time collaborator, Dr. Steve Brule, who bears a striking resemblance to actor John C. Reilly. Due to an extremely loyal fanbase, this show is sold out, so you’ll have to check the secondary markets to score a seat. More info

Brandy Clark

Every song on Clark’s 2013 debut album, 12 Stories, was a winner, full of humor and heartache. She’s touring in support of country star Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland, for whom Clark wrote a song about an abusive husband called “His Hands.” It should be a great show, and a chance to support the stirrings of a feminist wave in country music.
