A new edition of the most widely used psychiatric guide to mental disorders — “The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders” — was released this past weekend in San Francisco at a meeting of the American Psychiatric Association. The manual has a big impact on public health, including what insurance companies will cover, the drugs that regulators will approve, and even which children will receive special education services.
