"content": "\u003cp>For my grandpa's 90th birthday, our family threw him a \u003cem>barrio fiesta\u003c/em>-themed bash.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>We decorated the backyard with colorful bunting so it would look like the neighborhood parties that Tatay grew up with in his home country of the Philippines. We ordered a big \u003cem>lechon\u003c/em>, a roasted pig. And the guests were asked to wear \u003cem>filipiniana\u003c/em>, traditional Filipino costume.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>While I was jazzed to don a bright orange and yellow \u003cem>patadyong—\u003c/em>a sarong-like skirt and wrap—my white, 30-something husband Darren, from Nashville, Tenn., felt nervous in his \u003cem>barong\u003c/em>, an embroidered shirt woven from pineapple leaf fibers. My aunt had told all the guests to dress in traditional clothes.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"I feel like this is cultural appropriation,\" he said, tugging at the collar and looking around nervously. \"I honestly feel uncomfortable.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I could understand Darren's trepidation. Just over this past year, a number of prominent people have gotten into hot water for donning the dress of other cultures. Some found her jewelry \"insulting,\" although Addi Ouadderrou, a Moroccan Amazigh, told NPR that her getup didn't bother him. \"If someone comes to Morocco and wants to wear our clothes, to me, that's an honor; that's not an insult,\" he said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But wearing a \u003cem>barong\u003c/em> to Tatay's birthday party—this, I felt, was not appropriation. It filled me with pride to see my white husband in the clothing of my heritage. I know my family was excited, too. My uncle lent his shirt, which he had dry-cleaned and pressed before giving to Darren. My cousins wanted to take selfies with him.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I reassured him that he was expressing support and a sense of unity with my Filipino family. And we were wearing these outfits as an act of kindness to Tatay. He is losing his memory—but \u003cem>barong\u003c/em> and \u003cem>patadyong \u003c/em>and \u003cem>lechon\u003c/em>, these are some of the things that remain in his mind.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Still, I wasn't sure who was right. Was Darren appreciating? Or appropriating? I turned to the experts for advice.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003ca href=\"https://www.wellesley.edu/philosophy/faculty/matthes\">Erich Hatala Matthes\u003c/a>, an assistant professor of philosophy at Wellesley College who studies the ethics of cultural heritage, told me that there's no clear definition of cultural appropriation: \"It's a really messy thing.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Listening to my story, he says it was okay that Darren wore a \u003cem>barong\u003c/em> to my family party. \"He's been invited by you and your family\u003cem>.\u003c/em> He has a good reason to do it. It's an act of cultural solidarity,\" he says.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But there are times when it's not okay, says Matthes: If you are wearing the clothing of another culture to intentionally offend or make fun of the group or to assert power over them (for example, if Darren was wearing the \u003cem>barong\u003c/em> to make a point that America once occupied the Philippines—yikes!). And the folks I interviewed urge caution when it comes to dressing up in the garb of another ethnic group for Halloween.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"If you're [not] wearing it as part of a cultural exploration or education, you should be hesitant,\" Matthes says.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Each culture gets to give permission to share a cultural tradition—or not, says \u003ca href=\"https://www.uvu.edu/profpages/profiles/show/user_id/13176\">C. Thi Nguyen\u003c/a>, an associate professor of philosophy at Utah Valley University. He is the co-author of a paper titled \u003ca href=\"https://www.academia.edu/37275595/Cultural_Appropriation_and_the_Intimacy_of_Groups\">Cultural Appropriation and the Intimacy of Groups\u003c/a>.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>That's because not all groups within a culture have the same views, he says. In May, a white high school student in Utah ignited furor for wearing a Chinese-style dress to prom because she liked its look. \u003ca href=\"https://twitter.com/jere_bare/status/989981023076208640\">In a viral tweet\u003c/a>, one person on Twitter wrote, \"my culture is NOT\" ... your prom dress. \u003ca href=\"https://twitter.com/msyinseattle/status/991187935381762048?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E991187935381762048&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.washingtonpost.com%2Fnews%2Fmorning-mix%2Fwp%2F2018%2F05%2F01%2Fits-just-a-dress-teens-chinese-prom-attire-stirs-cultural-appropriation-debate%2F\">Another wrote\u003c/a>, \"I am a Chinese woman. I support you!\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>https://twitter.com/jere_bare/status/989981023076208640\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The student, Keziah Daum, \u003ca href=\"https://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Style/teen-defends-chinese-prom-dress-sparked-cultural-appropriation/story?id=54866211\">told ABC News\u003c/a> that the backlash was unexpected. \"My intention was never to cause any commotion or misunderstanding,\" she said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>If you want to wear a cultural outfit to an event, say a \u003cem>qipao \u003c/em>to a party hosted by Chinese friends, or a sari to a South Asian wedding, but you are not a member of either of these groups, what should you do?\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"Listen to the cultures involved,\" says Nguyen. \"Ask the most relevant representatives of the culture, in this case the family, whether they want you to participate.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>And it's not up to outsiders to decide. \"It imposes \u003cem>your\u003c/em> singular view from the outside without consulting that particular cultural group\"—and it can come off as dismissive and presumptive. You're basically deciding on behalf of a group that you're not part of, says Nguyen.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Lastly, be aware that donning a culture's dress comes with great responsibility, says Mayra Monroy, an adjunct professor at Baylor University and the author of a paper called \u003cem>An Analysis of Cultural Appropriation in Fashion and Popular Media\u003c/em>. "content": "\u003cp>In 2004, if there had been an unofficial Queen of Cultural Appropriation, there is no doubt (pun intended) that Gwen Stefani would have worn the crown. The singer had previously committed a multitude of \u003ca href=\"http://cdn1-www.thefashionspot.com/assets/uploads/gallery/gwen-stefani-birthday/52969824.jpg\">bindi-related\u003c/a> crimes when still fronting her band, but nothing she'd done previously came even close to what happened when she released her debut solo album, \u003cem>Love. Angel. Music. Baby.\u003c/em>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Truly, the entire promotional cycle for this thing largely revolved around using silent, smiling Japanese women as human accessories. The four women were given dehumanizing pet names -- Love, Angel, Music and Baby (unsurprisingly) -- and paraded around as dancing props who, quite often, were dressed up in outfits that overtly played into Japanese stereotypes, including ones about schoolgirls. Their likenesses were also turned into perfume bottles and a variety of other clothing accessories for Stefani's L.A.M.B. brand.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In case you missed the horror show the first time around, hang onto your jaws and click play:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qecNL1266ms\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Vocal opposition to Stefani's cultural insensitivity was loud at the time -- Margaret Cho comparing the Harajuku girls to a Minstrel show was \u003ca href=\"http://margaretcho.com/2005/10/31/harajuku-girls/\">particularly memorable\u003c/a> -- and it hasn't ever really died down. In 2014, \u003cem>Time\u003c/em> reminded us that Stefani had \"\u003ca href=\"http://time.com/3524847/gwen-stefani-racist-harajuku-girls/\">perpetuated some extremely racist stereotypes\u003c/a>,\" and \u003cem>Vice\u003c/em> did a 10-year anniversary article to pointedly look back on Stefani's \"\u003ca href=\"http://www.vice.com/read/revisiting-gwen-stefanis-racist-pop-frankenstein-ten-years-later-567\">Racist Pop Frankenstein Years\u003c/a>.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Between that, plus the incident in 2012 when No Doubt had to apologize to Native Americans for the \"cowboys and Indians-themed\" video for \u003ca href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40OSktBigHw\">\"Looking Hot\"\u003c/a> (which featured Stefani wearing traditional tribal clothing and DANCING IN A TEEPEE), you'd have thought the singer would have learned to question her own appropriation problems before making them yet again.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Nope!\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Earlier this week, \u003ca href=\"http://www.nick.com/\">Nickelodeon\u003c/a> announced the Oct. 3 debut of \u003ca href=\"http://www.nick.com/kuu-kuu-harajuku/\">\u003cem>Kuu Kuu Harajuku\u003c/em>\u003c/a> -- a cartoon that revives Love, Angel, Music and Baby and puts them in a band (named HJ5) alongside a blond named \"G\" (guess who?). It's hard not to. The school uniforms are still there. And one girl has hair sticks. But these \"Harajuku\" girls, with their long legs, tiny waists, big boots and oversized, made-up eyes, more closely resemble \u003ca href=\"http://www.toysrus.com/graphics/product_images/pTRU1-20937459enh-z6.jpg\">Bratz\u003c/a> dolls (a brand frequently criticized for marketing overly-sexualized female body ideals to tweens) than anything related to \u003ca href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harajuku\" target=\"_blank\">Harajuku culture.\u003c/a> It seems Stefani (or network executives) thought the best way to deal with the overt cultural appropriation was simply \"let's not have them be Asian anymore.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>There are Stefani fans who will undoubtedly argue that if she had gone with an animated band of obviously Asian characters, that too would have been culturally insensitive. They will say that Gwen is damned if she does, and damned if she doesn't. But there is a very obvious and simple way for Stefani to avoid any more racial and cultural shadiness here: Just remove the word \"Harajuku\" from the show. Problem solved!\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOHAU13FfiI\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Gwen Stefani is a well-established enough artist to make a successful animated show about five girls forming a Spice Girls-style band and having adventures without chucking the word \"Harajuku\" into the title -- especially, seemingly, for the sake of clinging to a problematic theme that she already exhausted 12 years ago. Too late now, though: the show has already been on in Australia for almost a year.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>It might seem foolish to be upset about anything Gwen Stefani does at this point. Sure, this is \"only\" pop music and a children's TV show we're talking about. The singer had previously committed a multitude of \u003ca href=\"http://cdn1-www.thefashionspot.com/assets/uploads/gallery/gwen-stefani-birthday/52969824.jpg\">bindi-related\u003c/a> crimes when still fronting her band, but nothing she'd done previously came even close to what happened when she released her debut solo album, \u003cem>Love. Angel. Music. Baby.\u003c/em>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Truly, the entire promotional cycle for this thing largely revolved around using silent, smiling Japanese women as human accessories. The four women were given dehumanizing pet names -- Love, Angel, Music and Baby (unsurprisingly) -- and paraded around as dancing props who, quite often, were dressed up in outfits that overtly played into Japanese stereotypes, including ones about schoolgirls. But these \"Harajuku\" girls, with their long legs, tiny waists, big boots and oversized, made-up eyes, more closely resemble \u003ca href=\"http://www.toysrus.com/graphics/product_images/pTRU1-20937459enh-z6.jpg\">Bratz\u003c/a> dolls (a brand frequently criticized for marketing overly-sexualized female body ideals to tweens) than anything related to \u003ca href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harajuku\" target=\"_blank\">Harajuku culture.\u003c/a> It seems Stefani (or network executives) thought the best way to deal with the overt cultural appropriation was simply \"let's not have them be Asian anymore.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>There are Stefani fans who will undoubtedly argue that if she had gone with an animated band of obviously Asian characters, that too would have been culturally insensitive. They will say that Gwen is damned if she does, and damned if she doesn't. But there is a very obvious and simple way for Stefani to avoid any more racial and cultural shadiness here: Just remove the word \"Harajuku\" from the show.
