"content": "\u003cp>The Home Depot parking lot is not the most popular place for an epiphany, but a week after the 9/11 tragedy, it came to me there, in brilliant orange and blue. We Californians were far from the horror, but we felt it in our hearts. We were connected, for the first time in our lives, by something both savage and mystical.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I was picking up a couple of 2x4s and had them over my shoulder on my way back to the truck, when I saw a man standing in front of his pickup, his hands planted firmly in his pockets. By the look of him, he worked with those hands, someone who wasn't afraid of a hammer or a dent in the tailgate. He was rugged, grizzled with a day or two of growth on his face. He was big. I'd seen him -- or someone like him -- a thousand times over my years of construction, but I hadn't noticed him as we headed our separate ways.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The man was taking it all in, looking west towards the sky. It was a quiet evening. The nation was still stunned. As I loaded my lumber into the truck bed, he turned to me.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"It's a beautiful sunset, isn't it?\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I looked up across the parking lot and saw a sienna crescent, the light glowing upwards to a low blanket of clouds that stretched across a vibrant endless blue.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"Yeah, it is,\" I said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Our eyes met, and his mouth turned up just slightly, both of us sharing something that meant more than anything had in a long time. He shifted on his feet, then moved to the door of the truck and drove away. I stared a few more seconds, smelling a mix of Doug Fir and exhaust, wondering what had happened to the world. I sat in the cab, listening to the sound of nothing.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Things change. The world shifts. And people, what they value and cherish and take for granted, change as well. "content": "\u003cdiv class=\"post-body\">\u003cp>\u003cp>The Home Depot parking lot is not the most popular place for an epiphany, but a week after the 9/11 tragedy, it came to me there, in brilliant orange and blue. We Californians were far from the horror, but we felt it in our hearts. We were connected, for the first time in our lives, by something both savage and mystical.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I was picking up a couple of 2x4s and had them over my shoulder on my way back to the truck, when I saw a man standing in front of his pickup, his hands planted firmly in his pockets. By the look of him, he worked with those hands, someone who wasn't afraid of a hammer or a dent in the tailgate. He was rugged, grizzled with a day or two of growth on his face. He was big. I'd seen him -- or someone like him -- a thousand times over my years of construction, but I hadn't noticed him as we headed our separate ways.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The man was taking it all in, looking west towards the sky. It was a quiet evening. The nation was still stunned. As I loaded my lumber into the truck bed, he turned to me.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"It's a beautiful sunset, isn't it?\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I looked up across the parking lot and saw a sienna crescent, the light glowing upwards to a low blanket of clouds that stretched across a vibrant endless blue.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

"content": "\u003cp>As a kid I remember flipping through the pages of a book my Japanese-American grandfather made for me and my family. There's the ink drawing of an old-timey radio broadcasting the news of the Pearl Harbor attack and the colored pencil sketch of the small wood stove in the family's barracks at the Minidoka internment camp.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I once asked if he thought such injustice as forced relocation and incarceration could ever happen again. He said yes -- because people will tell and believe all sorts of stories in the name of safety.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>As we mark the anniversary of September 11th, I mourn the passengers on the planes and all of those who didn't make it out of the twin towers or The Pentagon in time.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But there's something else to mourn here too -- that both planes and stories can be hijacked, and though the consequences are not fully comparable, they can both be destructive.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The stories of all the people who lost their lives that day have been leveraged into a narrative that to be American is to be under attack. The response after September 11th was similarly flawed to our response after December 7th, 1941, singling out descendants of nations that we feared.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The mass murders perpetrated by terrorists are unjustifiable. But to appropriate the stories of thousands of victims to fuel a narrative which continues to turn us against each other, and against much of the world at large does not serve justice.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I'd like to believe those \"Japs Keep Out\" signs that my grandfather came home to are in our past. But when a classmate had the hijab ripped from her head by a screaming stranger, or yet another Latino friend shares a story of being called a wetback, I'm reminded that we've only come so far.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I barely speak any Japanese, but I do know the words Nidoto Nai Yoni. It's the name of a memorial commemorating the mass incarceration of Japanese families from Washington state's Bainbridge Island. "content": "\u003cp>This Perspective originally aired September 25, 2001.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I'm 26 years old. My generation has often been criticized as either cynical or apathetic. In truth, I've never felt the connection between the threat of foreign aggression and the safety of my community. I was born after Vietnam. The Gulf War felt like a distant social studies lesson. I've enjoyed the spoils of globalization, travelling freely throughout the world. And I entered the work force during the strongest economy in decades.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In the face of our nation's tragedy and suffering, who am I to have an epiphany? I hold instead to the meaning that comes from smaller observations. Recently I've been thinking of the moments between events, moments when we have the power to act even when these actions lead to our own demise. Between the terrorist attack and the World Trade Center collapse, firefighters rushed into the disaster. Between the hijackers violent takeover and the actual explosion, passengers dialed loved ones to report the hijack. The beauty in these moments is that we don't know what comes next and we have hope. That hope leads to action. We're in the midst of recovering from tragedy but we're also in this weighted moment before; before our response, before our retaliation, before the unknown. We mustn't get lost in feelings of powerlessness. Had passengers on United Flight 93 understood themselves as powerless we might have no White House.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Americans may never feel safe again. But I believe my generation has lost only the privilege of our ignorance which isn't privilege at all. It is a time to risk complacency and take action in the spirit of hope. Read. Educate ourselves. Connect to our communities. Write. Patron the business of Muslim Americans. Call Congress. Call our moms, our families. Express our desire for peace, or for war. Believe that each action we take, no matter how small, changes the future. "content": "\u003cp>We faced west in our Brooklyn apartment to where the Hudson and East Rivers joined. Lady Liberty with hand high, reminded me to vote in the primary that day. My husband was dropping off our daughter at school, and then we'd head to the poll.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Our corner building with the deli and social club was a gathering place, but now, not even 9 am, wise guys blasted a radio and drew a crowd. It was early for election news. When I raised the window to shush the din, I heard the broadcast clearly. A plane had crashed into one of the twin towers. I switched on the TV to that exact image, then the screen went blank.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Brownstones across Henry Street obscured our view of events. I chose not to walk half a block where I could see it all. I'm an artist. I know the staying power of visuals. Instead I heard the second plane hit, the long, low rumble as buildings crumbled and fell, and the WNYC reporters with quivering voices who told of adults holding children out windows or jumping from heights to avoid the flames. There was no escaping these images.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>My husband walked back under a shower of burning papers he first mistook for campaign leaflets. Singed stationery bearing the WTC address cluttered our stoop. He went into action, securing bottled water and canned beans, setting up air filters, and ushering our daughter home.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Voting saved some late to work, but posts of the missing showed many were not so lucky. Parents of our daughter's schoolmates perished. Everywhere was loss. No place seemed safe. Each low noise set us on edge. Seasonal thunderstorms sounded like attacks. Anthrax appeared near my husband's work. Fires smoldered deep.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>For 13 years we'd talked about moving across the country to be near family, talked until no one believed us. We decided quickly now. Lady Liberty with hand high, reminded me to vote in the primary that day. My husband was dropping off our daughter at school, and then we'd head to the poll.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Our corner building with the deli and social club was a gathering place, but now, not even 9 am, wise guys blasted a radio and drew a crowd. It was early for election news. When I raised the window to shush the din, I heard the broadcast clearly. A plane had crashed into one of the twin towers. I switched on the TV to that exact image, then the screen went blank.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Brownstones across Henry Street obscured our view of events. I chose not to walk half a block where I could see it all. I'm an artist. I know the staying power of visuals. Instead I heard the second plane hit, the long, low rumble as buildings crumbled and fell, and the WNYC reporters with quivering voices who told of adults holding children out windows or jumping from heights to avoid the flames. There was no escaping these images.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>My husband walked back under a shower of burning papers he first mistook for campaign leaflets. Singed stationery bearing the WTC address cluttered our stoop. He went into action, securing bottled water and canned beans, setting up air filters, and ushering our daughter home.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Voting saved some late to work, but posts of the missing showed many were not so lucky. Parents of our daughter's schoolmates perished. Everywhere was loss. No place seemed safe. Each low noise set us on edge. Seasonal thunderstorms sounded like attacks. Anthrax appeared near my husband's work. Fires smoldered deep.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

"content": "\u003cp>On September 11th, 2001, my Long Island mother was in tears, but not because of the attacks. \"This is the best gift I've ever received,\" she said to me by phone.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>It was her birthday -- her 50th birthday -- and I had spent the summer making a video of old photos of her as well as rare video of her father who passed away two months earlier. So instead of watching a replay of the planes crashing into the towers over and over, my mom was already wearing out the VHS tape I gave her.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Bad things happen everyday: people starve, tumors spread, nature threatens. Fortunately hardships don't only reap, they can also sow. As our world got a little smaller on 9/11 many of our hearts softened, others hardened. It's a choice: compassion or vengeance, connectedness or isolation. And while I'll take a moment Sunday to reflect on the lives lost and the path we've traveled since, 9/11 also taught me the fine line between reflection and brooding. Following the attacks I found myself consuming way too much news -- and soon after the news began consuming me. The media saturation of WMDs, Abu Ghraib, sleeper cells and car bombs left me jaded. So this year I'm seeking a healthier balance for contemplation.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>On 9/11/01, global strife finally came to our doorstep, shattered our naivety and left us feeling vulnerabile. Nearly 3,000 lives were lost in an instant. But even on our worst day, especially on our worst day, it's equally as important to remember all the things that make life good. Real good.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Today there were 490,000 births, 115,000 weddings, 700,000 people are visiting National Parks today, and currently 150,000 troops are working damn hard to create some semblance of stability in Iraq and Afghanistan.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>And finally, to my mother, Ellie Smith in East Islip New York, have a happy 60th birthday, and a wonderful September 11th.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>With a Perspective, I'm Craig Smith.\u003c/p>\n\n",
