(David Gartner/Flickr)\u003c/figcaption>\u003c/figure>\n\u003cp>\u003ca href=\"http://documents.bayareacouncil.org/sfshuttlepreso.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">A \u003c/a>poll released today by \u003ca href=\"http://www.emcresearch.com/\" target=\"_blank\">EMC Research\u003c/a> and commissioned by \u003ca href=\"http://www.bayareacouncil.org/\" target=\"_blank\">the Bay Area Council\u003c/a>, a pro-business group, suggests that people are not as upset about “Google buses” or tech shuttles as anecdotal evidence would lead you to believe. Protests, \u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/2013/12/09/activists/\" target=\"_blank\">previously covered by KQED\u003c/a>, have attracted attention from around the country as buses shuttling employees to tech jobs in the South Bay were surrounding by activists.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But not everyone is angry. The new poll found that a majority — 57 percent of the 500 likely voters polled — had a favorable or somewhat favorable impression of tech employee shuttle buses, while 15 percent said they had never heard of such a thing. The telephone survey also found that those surveyed had an even more favorable impression of tech workers and the impact of recent tech sector growth on the city. \u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/2014/02/20/activists-appeal-san-francisco-tech-bus-plan\" target=\"_blank\">A plan to allow the shuttles to use some city Muni stops also garnered support\u003c/a>, because people believe the tech shuttle buses decrease traffic and pollution. However, 70 percent also said they supported some form of regulation of the shuttle buses. That study, called \u003ca href=\"http://thesanfranciscosurvey.com/2013november/\" target=\"_blank\">The San Francisco Survey\u003c/a>, asked residents broader questions on their feelings about housing, the problems they face and the economic changes in the Bay Area.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Just five months ago, 84 percent of the people polled said they felt that the tech growth has greatly impacted the cost of living in the city. Did their opinions change since then or did the questions change? Protests, \u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/2013/12/09/activists/\" target=\"_blank\">previously covered by KQED\u003c/a>, have attracted attention from around the country as buses shuttling employees to tech jobs in the South Bay were surrounding by activists.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But not everyone is angry. The new poll found that a majority — 57 percent of the 500 likely voters polled — had a favorable or somewhat favorable impression of tech employee shuttle buses, while 15 percent said they had never heard of such a thing. The telephone survey also found that those surveyed had an even more favorable impression of tech workers and the impact of recent tech sector growth on the city. \u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/2014/02/20/activists-appeal-san-francisco-tech-bus-plan\" target=\"_blank\">A plan to allow the shuttles to use some city Muni stops also garnered support\u003c/a>, because people believe the tech shuttle buses decrease traffic and pollution. However, 70 percent also said they supported some form of regulation of the shuttle buses. Many express frustration about their apparent lack of ability to do anything to stop the walkout. And some have some ideas for how to change things so that BART can't strike again. Fire and/or lock out all the workers and replace them.\u003c/strong> We've already heard from this camp above, but here's another comment for good measure:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/2013/10/18/the-audience-speaks/screen-shot-2013-10-18-at-11-14-12-am/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-115488\">\u003cimg class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-115488\" src=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2013/10/Screen-Shot-2013-10-18-at-11.14.12-AM-e1382125662379.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2013-10-18 at 11.14.12 AM\" width=\"640\" height=\"119\">\u003c/a>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>2. Pass laws to ban strikes by workers at BART and other transit agencies. \u003c/strong>This is an idea that's clearly gaining popularity with both Republicans in the state Legislature and an East Bay Assembly candidate pushing for a change in state law:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/2013/10/18/the-audience-speaks/screen-shot-2013-10-18-at-11-17-07-am/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-115487\">\u003cimg class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-115487\" src=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2013/10/Screen-Shot-2013-10-18-at-11.17.07-AM-e1382125689493.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2013-10-18 at 11.17.07 AM\" width=\"640\" height=\"183\">\u003c/a>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>3. Automate BART trains so they don't need unionized drivers anymore.\u003c/strong> Commenters like to point out that the Bay Area is the center of universal technological innovation (except for all those bullet trains and cool transit systems in Japan, France, Germany, China and Britain). This idea isn't so far out. Vancouver, B.C., \u003ca href=\"http://www.humantransit.org/2010/02/driverless-rapid-transit-why-it-matters.html\" target=\"_blank\">already has such a system\u003c/a>. And as a recent article in TechCrunch \u003ca href=\"http://techcrunch.com/2013/10/17/could-bart-automate-train-drivers/?ncid=twittersocialshare\" target=\"_blank\">pointed out\u003c/a>, Paris has installed a driverless system on one of its Metro lines and London's studying the idea for its underground. Here's a comment that mixes a couple of our themes:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/2013/10/18/kqed-audience-speaks-on-bart-strike/screen-shot-2013-10-18-at-2-26-02-pm/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-115526\">\u003cimg class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-115526\" src=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2013/10/Screen-Shot-2013-10-18-at-2.26.02-PM-e1382131612345.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2013-10-18 at 2.26.02 PM\" width=\"640\" height=\"216\">\u003c/a>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>4. Form a riders' union to \"strike back\" against BART workers' union. \u003c/strong>Again, this isn't a wacky idea. For instance, riders' groups have formed in San Francisco, Seattle and other cities. (What's unknown to me, frankly, is how effective they are in influencing transportation policy and whether they have the clout to effectively participate in contract battles.)\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/2013/10/18/kqed-audience-speaks-on-bart-strike/screen-shot-2013-10-18-at-11-19-09-am/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-115485\">\u003cimg class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-115485\" src=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2013/10/Screen-Shot-2013-10-18-at-11.19.09-AM-e1382125800122.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2013-10-18 at 11.19.09 AM\" width=\"640\" height=\"109\">\u003c/a>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Is there a counter-trend? Pass laws to ban strikes by workers at BART and other transit agencies. \u003c/strong>This is an idea that's clearly gaining popularity with both Republicans in the state Legislature and an East Bay Assembly candidate pushing for a change in state law:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/2013/10/18/the-audience-speaks/screen-shot-2013-10-18-at-11-17-07-am/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-115487\">\u003cimg class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-115487\" src=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2013/10/Screen-Shot-2013-10-18-at-11.17.07-AM-e1382125689493.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2013-10-18 at 11.17.07 AM\" width=\"640\" height=\"183\">\u003c/a>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>3. Automate BART trains so they don't need unionized drivers anymore.\u003c/strong> Commenters like to point out that the Bay Area is the center of universal technological innovation (except for all those bullet trains and cool transit systems in Japan, France, Germany, China and Britain). This idea isn't so far out. Vancouver, B.C., \u003ca href=\"http://www.humantransit.org/2010/02/driverless-rapid-transit-why-it-matters.html\" target=\"_blank\">already has such a system\u003c/a>. And as a recent article in TechCrunch \u003ca href=\"http://techcrunch.com/2013/10/17/could-bart-automate-train-drivers/?ncid=twittersocialshare\" target=\"_blank\">pointed out\u003c/a>, Paris has installed a driverless system on one of its Metro lines and London's studying the idea for its underground. Here's a comment that mixes a couple of our themes:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/2013/10/18/kqed-audience-speaks-on-bart-strike/screen-shot-2013-10-18-at-2-26-02-pm/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-115526\">\u003cimg class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-115526\" src=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2013/10/Screen-Shot-2013-10-18-at-2.26.02-PM-e1382131612345.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2013-10-18 at 2.26.02 PM\" width=\"640\" height=\"216\">\u003c/a>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>4. Form a riders' union to \"strike back\" against BART workers' union. \u003c/strong>Again, this isn't a wacky idea. For instance, riders' groups have formed in San Francisco, Seattle and other cities. (What's unknown to me, frankly, is how effective they are in influencing transportation policy and whether they have the clout to effectively participate in contract battles.)\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/2013/10/18/kqed-audience-speaks-on-bart-strike/screen-shot-2013-10-18-at-11-19-09-am/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-115485\">\u003cimg class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-115485\" src=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2013/10/Screen-Shot-2013-10-18-at-11.19.09-AM-e1382125800122.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2013-10-18 at 11.19.09 AM\" width=\"640\" height=\"109\">\u003c/a>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Is there a counter-trend? Pro-union people coming to the defense of the union's and the idea of collective bargaining?
