Virtual Textbooks Aim to Save Money, Promote Interaction
A bill on Governor Jerry Brown's desk could save California college students thousands of dollars. It would replace many of the expensive textbooks students must buy with low-cost digital downloads. The plan would also create online "study halls" where students around the state could discuss the curriculum.
Multilingual Ballots Help Voters, Challenge Counties
This November, millions of Californians will vote in a language other than English. Since 1975, federal law has required counties to provide bilingual ballots and language assistance when at least 5 percent of the local population has difficulty functioning in English. But many counties are lagging behind in complying with the law.
