When a 2010 expose revealed that city officials in the town of Bell were reportedly bringing home some of the highest public salaries in the nation, there was a clamor for more accountability in pay rates for state public officials. Public employee salaries account for a big chunk of California's tax dollars: some $40 billion a year. The Center for Investigative Reporting has released an analysis of four years worth of data on compensation for top public servants from around the state.
