Lawmakers Turn Attention to Lost Home Values in Porter Ranch
Three months ago today, a natural gas leak started near the southern California community of Porter Ranch. The leak still hasn't been stopped, and at a state Assembly hearing Thursday night, lawmakers discussed possible solutions for getting the SoCalGas company to reimburse residents for lost property value. Congressman Brad Sherman, who moved to Porter Ranch a year ago, blamed federal and state laws for allowing homes to be located so close to the gas storage facility.

Gov. Jerry Brown is once again warning that storm clouds are on the economic horizon. During his State of the State address Thursday, Brown said California should not take on expensive new projects despite its budget surplus.

Students Stymied by Exit Exam May Qualify for Diplomas, but Outreach Spotty
California no longer requires students to pass a high school exit exam to graduate. Thousands of students dating back to 2006 failed the test. This year -- because of a new change in the law -- these students could get their diplomas, but many school districts are making little effort to notify them.
