UC Adopts Statement Condemning 'Anti-Semitic Forms' of Anti-Zionism
The UC Regents met Wednesday and took up a controversial issue: does anti-Zionism equal anti-Semitism? The Regents had been trying to pass a statement against intolerance, but a line in the statement equating anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism sparked protest. Critics said if it was adopted, it would squash free speech and restrict any criticism of Israel or its policies. The Regents decided to amend the statement to say anti-Zionism in the form of anti-Jewish bigotry does not belong on campus.
The Regents Education Committee unanimously adopted the amended statement.
