Jeremy Puckett pasó 18 años en prisión por un crimen que no cometió. Fue exonerado y salió libre en Sacramento el 13 de marzo de 2020, pocos días antes de que el gobernador Gavin Newsom emitiera la orden de quedarse en casa.
"Estoy feliz de estar en casa, absolutamente," dijo Puckett. "Pero en realidad no hay mucho que hacer debido a la orden."
Puckett fue arrestado, acusado de un robo y asesinato, y sentenciado a cadena perpetua sin posibilidad de libertad condicional en el 2002. Pero en el transcurso de los últimos seis años, la organización Proyecto de Inocencia del Norte de California ayudó a exponer numerosos problemas con el enjuiciamiento de Puckett que nunca se presentaron al jurado, incluyendo una coartada, una retractación del autor que originalmente implicó a Puckett y evidencia significativa que incluyó 700 páginas de materiales que el gobierno no presentó.
Aunque se encuentra feliz de estar en casa con su familia en Sacramento, Puckett ha entrado en un mundo muy diferente al que había imaginado hace unos meses. "He estado lidiando con problemas para obtener mi tarjeta del seguro social, mi licencia de conducir y mi identificación," dijo.

Aunque la cuarentena de su hijo fue una medida de prevención causada por una fiebre de su compañero de celda, Puckett continue preocupado porque no ha tenido noticias de él en más de una semana.
Puckett dijo que se mantiene en contacto con sus amigos que aún están en prisión, algunos de los cuales han compartido sus preocupaciones. "Cuando estás encarcelado, básicamente estás sentado dentro de una caja," dijo Puckett. "Hay muy poco que hacer, así que ya sabes, estás más preocupado por lo que entra que por lo que sale."
Las personas encarceladas son particularmente vulnerables durante esta pandemia, y las nuevas medidas de seguridad también han limitado el apoyo que pueden recibir. En el sistema penitenciario del estado de California, por ejemplo, todos los visitantes, voluntarios y proveedores de programas de rehabilitación han sido suspendidos desde mediados de marzo.

Donar dinero directamente
Restore Justice, una organización sin fines de lucro con sede en Los Ángeles para la reforma de la justicia penal, organizó un grupo de Facebook para ayudar a encontrar personas encarceladas que necesitan dinero para artículos básicos como alimentos o productos de higiene como jabón y pasta de dientes. Se puede encontrar información de identificación para una persona encarcelada que necesita dinero y enviarla directamente a la cuenta de esa persona.
Ayudar a pagar las fianzas

Restore Justice está aceptando donaciones para comprar mascarillas de tipo N95 para personas y personal encarcelado.
El Science Policy Group de la Universidad de California, San Francisco (UCSF) está trabajando actualmente en un proyecto de ayuda mutua para distribuir desinfectante de manos a las poblaciones vulnerables en el Área de la Bahía, incluyendo las personas encarceladas.
