The first batch of California National Guard troops arrived at the border on Monday, with the top Border Patrol agent for the El Centro region, Gloria Chavez, saying the Guard will help with "vegetation, road clearing and such."

Chavez welcomed 51 Guard troops and repeatedly stated they would be "behind the scenes" while supporting the Border Patrol.
