Secondary educators in the San Francisco Bay Area are invited to join the KQED Media Literacy Academy, a new professional learning cohort focused on integrating youth media in the classroom to boost student engagement and media literacy. With hands-on support from KQED Education staff, you’ll learn how to implement the KQED Youth Media Challenge curriculum, which includes a complete set of resources to help you lead your students through creating an audio, video, or graphics project and publishing it on the KQED Youth Media Showcase.

Applications for the KQED Media Literacy Academy are open now through May 31, 2025 for the 2025-26 school year.

Participants receive:

  • $500 stipend
  • Hands-on training in media literacy + production
  • Personalized coaching from KQED
  • Network with other local educators committed to student voice and choice

Who should apply:

  • This opportunity is open to Bay Area educators who work directly with middle or high school students, in any subject area.
  • No previous experience with creating media or with leading a media-making project required.

Eligibility requirements:

We can’t wait to see your application if you are:

  • A middle or high school teacher in the Bay Area
  • Ready to learn more about youth voice and youth media making
  • Excited to see your students’ media pieces published on the KQED Youth Media Showcase website
  • Able to commit to the key workshop dates below

Key Participation Dates:

  • Sep 20 – Kickoff (Required, In-person)
  • Sep 29 – Production (Optional, virtual)
  • Oct 6  – Production (Optional, virtual)
  • Oct 20 – Assessment & Implementation (Required, virtual)
  • Jan 26 – Final Showcase & Celebration (Required, virtual)
