Surveillance cameras are a fact of everyday life, so omnipresent we often forget about the implications of being recorded—and just who is observing us.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“I don’t know that we fully appreciate the level that we’re observed,” says artist Chris Eckert. "content": "\u003cp>Whether she’s teaching history to eighth graders at Monroe Middle School, performing spoken-word poetry at \u003ca href=\"https://workssanjose.org/\">Works/San José\u003c/a> or rallying a crowd of protestors,\u003ca href=\"http://www.ashapoet.com/\"> ASHA\u003c/a> is unapologetically herself.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Part of that confidence and stage presence comes from knowing her family’s story—the result of generations of displacement and migration—won’t be told by anyone else, especially not the history books. That realization came early: In sixth grade she found her family’s name, Sudra, summed up in two brief paragraphs about India’s caste system.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“My family story is so much more rich than that,” she says, tracing their path from India to British-run East Africa, then to refugee camps in England and finally, Los Angeles, where she was born.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Her family’s trajectory deeply informs her own art, where she talks about the ramifications of colonialism, the realities of growing up as a person of color in the United States, and how she grew to be comfortable in her own skin.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In her history classes, she provides students with the tools to examine their own identities and learn about their families’ paths to San Jose. The co-founders of \u003ca href=\"http://peopleskitchencollective.com/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u003cspan class=\"s1\">People’s Kitchen Collective\u003c/span>\u003c/a> (PKC), Sita Kuratomi Bhaumik, Jocelyn Jackson and Saqib Keval, believe in the power of conversation and community over shared meals—and the necessity of bridging racial, religious and generational divides to build solidarity.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp class=\"p1\">Over the course of a year, PKC organized a four-meal series called “From the FARM, to the KITCHEN, to the TABLE, to the STREETS,” nourishing people with courses sourced from their own family recipes, community members and historical references. As PKC says, “In our kitchen, food has flavor.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp class=\"p1\">“TABLE” brought together communities affected by xenophobic immigration policies, including Flora Ninomiya, a survivor of the internment camps of Japanese Americans established under Executive Order 9066, and Misha Abbas, a Muslim textile artist from Pakistan.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp class=\"p1\">“The Muslim travel ban and the idea that we don’t belong here, that’s how the Japanese were seen,” says Abbas, who created and naturally died furoshiki, traditional Japanese wrapping cloths, using flowers from Ninomiya’s land. “We’re part of the same struggle.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp class=\"p1\">For the culminating meal, PKC fed 500 guests, with dishes inspired by the Black Panthers’ Free Breakfast Program—at a single long table that spanned an entire West Oakland city block.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp class=\"p1\">“We’re Black and brown people at a table together in a Black and brown neighborhood, claiming space, and that’s political,” says Keval. Viewer discretion advised. \u003c/em>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>When Shane Zaldivar showed up at the casting call for\u003cem> The Compton’s Cafeteria Riot\u003c/em>, a play presented by the Tenderloin Museum about the 1966 riot between cafeteria customers (trans women, drag queens and LGBTQ community members) and the San Francisco police, the 27-year-old actor had only recently learned about the historic event.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“If I had known that story earlier on, been taught it in high school,” Zaldivar recalls wistfully. “This is a group of people, fighting for their rights, as human beings, and they are still doing that fight today.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The riot, which took place a full three years before Stonewall, is the first known instance of militant queer resistance to police harassment in United States history, and in recent years—thanks to a 2005 documentary \u003ca href=\"https://www.kqed.org/arts/11838357/in-66-on-one-hot-august-night-trans-women-fought-for-their-rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u003cem>Screaming Queens\u003c/em>\u003c/a>, and this play, written by Mark Nassar, Collette LeGrande and Donna Personna—this seminal moment in LGBTQ and Bay Area history is finally getting the attention it deserves.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cem>The Compton’s Cafeteria Riot\u003c/em>, which ran for just over two months in San Francisco’s New Village Cafe, collapsed the distance between audience and performer, lived history and theatrical retelling. Playgoers sat at the “Compton’s” counter, ate a meal and watched a group of transgender women and drag queens decide they’d withstood enough police harassment and brutality—it was time to fight back. The motions echo across the group in perfect synchronization. They pop, they strut. They’re Playboyz Inc.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Their origin story goes all the way back to 1981, making Playboyz one of the oldest dance crews in the Bay Area. With electro funk blasting, kids gathered in garages, on the streets, in their local rec centers, developing their own variations of a style of street dance that spread up and down the West Coast.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In East San Jose, Playboyz founder Robert Sabala recruited 12-year-old Bryan Moreno (a.k.a. Money B) to join his new dance crew, their moves an extension of their Chicano culture. Friends and family moved in and out of the group over the years, dance moves and street cred traveling by word of mouth and VHS tapes.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“The whole signature San Jose style is super swagged out, smooth, very street,” says current Playboyz member Alex Flores (a.k.a. Replace Griffith Park with the Boyle Heights Mariachi Plaza. Swap Grand Central Market for the decidedly less gentrified Central Wholesale Produce Market.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Then cast Lily Ontiveros, a formally trained contemporary dancer from Monterrey, Mexico, as the young ingénue. And for the male lead: Roberto Lambaren, a.k.a. Rawbzilla, a former b-boy with deep roots in the Los Angeles hip-hop scene. Let their dancing depict a community — and a neighborhood — that’s mostly overlooked on the silver screen.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Cue the romantic strings and fantasy is complete.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Back in the real world, Los Angeles is an inspiration to both Ontiveros and Lambaren, who work with Heidi Duckler Dance Theater, a company that performs only in non-traditional spaces. “That’s what L.A. is all about,” Lambaren says, “creativity and being original and adding something to the dance culture.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>For Ontiveros, who hopes to establish a dance career in Los Angeles, the immigrant population is part of the fabric of the city, and why she loves it there. “It’s kind of a reminder of where I come from and how hard everyone has worked to be here,” she says.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Los Angeles, the dancers say, pushes them both to find their own voices.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“For a lot of dancers here, they should always want to stand out,” Lambaren says. “And how do you stand out? And for the male lead: Roberto Lambaren, a.k.a. Rawbzilla, a former b-boy with deep roots in the Los Angeles hip-hop scene. Let their dancing depict a community — and a neighborhood — that’s mostly overlooked on the silver screen.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Cue the romantic strings and fantasy is complete.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Back in the real world, Los Angeles is an inspiration to both Ontiveros and Lambaren, who work with Heidi Duckler Dance Theater, a company that performs only in non-traditional spaces. “That’s what L.A. is all about,” Lambaren says, “creativity and being original and adding something to the dance culture.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

Watch a new episode every Tuesday through May 28, 2018.\u003c/em>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>When the average person thinks of parades in New Orleans, they’re probably thinking of the Mardi Gras processions that attract hordes of tourists every Carnival season. But for locals, it’s all about the second line, which fill the streets with joyful dancing and live brass bands every Sunday, ten months out of the year.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“You could have six bad days, Monday through Saturday, and get up Sunday and go to a second line, and you’re gonna forget,” says Rodrick “Scubble” Davis, a second line dancer known for his exuberant, athletic footwork. “Just that one day will make your whole week.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Scubble grew up in the historic African-American neighborhood Tremé, known as the birthplace of jazz and center of second line tradition. Its parades took off after the end of slavery, when African Americans formed Benevolent Societies and Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs as a form of mutual social aid. Then, in the early 20th century, second lining merged with New Orleans’ burgeoning jazz culture.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Today, club members and their bands burst out onto the streets often wearing matching, brightly-colored outfits with elaborate hats and headdresses; they wave banners as traffic stops and the crowd parts to make way for their high-stepping dance moves.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Scubble, a club member with the Tremé Sidewalk Steppers, was introduced to second-lining when he was four years old by his mother, and his love for it grew. “I was always a hyped-kid, couldn’t keep still, and anytime I heard the band, I was moving,” he says.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Watch as Scubble dances his way through historic Tremé, including in front of the popular Candlelight Lounge, and as he joins in a Sunday parade, stopping to show off his moves on raised porches and atop bus stop shelters. Watch a new episode every Tuesday through May 28, 2018.\u003c/em>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In the world of vogue, a pedestrian walkway can be a catwalk, an alleyway can be stage, and the sunbathers in Dolores Park can be an adoring crowd of fashion photographers.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>According to Jocquese Whitfield (aka Sir JoQ), voguing — equal parts hard edges and soft curves — embodies the spirit of San Francisco. “San Francisco is dramatic because the rent is increasing, but it’s soft cause we’re still sitting here, unbothered,” he says.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Born and raised in San Francisco, Whitfield found vogue in his junior year of high school when he was looking for an alternative to the hip hop dance scene. “Vogue was that push that I needed to come out,” he says. “It shaped me to be the person I am today.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Vogue balls — and the houses that formed around them — have long been sources of community and support for LGBTQ people of color. Voguing as a dance form draws from fashion poses, martial arts, gymnastics and pantomime; it gained popularity in 1970s Harlem. The style later took root in Oakland and San Francisco, and spread worldwide after Madonna’s international hit “Vogue.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Today, Whitfield teaches classes at Dance Mission Theater and the ODC.
