"content": "\u003cp>Emmett Carson, the CEO of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, is officially out, the Foundation announced Wednesday.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Today, Dr. Carson will end his employment with SVCF after more than a decade of service, effective immediately,” the board of directors published on the Foundation’s \u003ca href=\"https://www.siliconvalleycf.org/blog/announcements/update-silicon-valley-community-foundation-board-directors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website\u003c/a>. “This will enable SVCF to continue to rebuild its workplace environment and execute its mission as effectively as possible.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Carson had been on paid administrative leave for approximately two months during an investigation of alleged managerial misconduct at the nation’s biggest community foundation. Board member Greg Avis will continue to serve as interim CEO while a national firm searches for a permanent replacement.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The board also released a \u003ca href=\"https://www.siliconvalleycf.org/sites/default/files/blog/SVCF-Public-Report-FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">summary\u003c/a> of the report detailing an independent investigation by the law firm \u003ca href=\"https://www.bsfllp.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boies Schiller Flexner\u003c/a>.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The board of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation commissioned the investigation in April, following reports of harassment and bullying at the hands of the nonprofit’s top fundraiser, Mari Ellen Loijens. A summary of the full report substantiates many of the allegations from current and former employees in blunt terms:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>BSF’s investigation found that there were certain widespread workplace culture issues at SVCF, including a fear of speaking out or reporting workplace issues out of concern for retaliation, as well as a distrust of HR leadership. The top-down, “command-and-control” management style of SVCF’s formerCEO and former senior development executive contributed to this environment.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>There were other workplace culture issues at SVCF that were not as widespread, but that were serious and affected many employees. These included sexual, racial, crude, and otherwise inappropriate remarks and conduct that became “normalized” within certain divisions, as well as public shaming and bullying behavior exhibited at times by certain former SVCF executives. Unacceptable behavior by certain former SVCF executives was often inadequately addressed or overlooked. Many employees (including other SVCF executives) reported feeling that certain former SVCF executives were“untouchable” regardless of their actions. When complaints were raised to HR or SVCF leaders, the systems put in place frequently failed to sufficiently address inappropriate conduct and ensure that appropriate remedial action was taken. Instead, employees were left with the impression that if they did not like the workplace culture, they were free to“get off the bus.” This evidently led some current and former employees to feel that they had no other option but to address workplace concerns in the press or write a letter directly to the Board.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>The Board acknowledged that, “This failure happened under our watch.” Also, “We are deeply sorry to our entire community, especially our past and present employees.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But the conciliatory language doesn’t mollify Rebecca Dupras, a former VP for development who \u003ca href=\"https://www.kqed.org/arts/13829974/top-fundraiser-at-silicon-valley-community-foundation-resigns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">left last year\u003c/a>. “I’m angry. This is pure cowardice. There’s a full report they aren’t releasing after promising full transparency. Plus why should he (or she) still benefit after promoting a culture of fear and intimidation for 11 years? Mediocrity is not acceptable,” Dupras wrote to KQED.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“The departures of Dr. Carson and other senior staff people are certainly step one in the healing process,” wrote Daniel Hoebeke, who was the Foundation’s Director of Planned Giving for all of five months. “My heart continues to go out, however, to the many, many individuals who suffered under their leadership. The permanent damage to their reputations and the stain on their resumes remains problematic.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Carson led the Foundation’s growth from the 2007 merger of two smaller community foundations. These days, the foundation’s assets total $13.5 billion, making it the third largest philanthropy in the United States. Carson was handsomely rewarded for that growth, making an annual salary of \u003ca href=\"https://www.philanthropy.com/article/Top-Earners-Among/242554\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nearly $900,000\u003c/a>.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Much of that growth was credited to Loijens, the Foundation’s chief business, development and brand officer. She resigned a day after a scathing report in the Chronicle of Philanthropy accused her of routinely bullying her staff and making sexually inappropriate remarks. It was that exposé, and subsequent publicity, that led the Foundation’s board of directors to act.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In a statement, Carson wrote:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>Guided by a board willing to take bold risks and a highly dedicated and committed staff who believed no challenge was beyond their capabilities, we achieved our goals beyond anyone’s dreams, including my own. SVCF charted an entirely new course recognizing that in an increasingly global society, individual and corporate donors have geographically diverse charitable interests and desire a single philanthropic institution through which to achieve their goals. Board member Greg Avis will continue to serve as interim CEO while a national firm searches for a permanent replacement.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The board also released a \u003ca href=\"https://www.siliconvalleycf.org/sites/default/files/blog/SVCF-Public-Report-FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">summary\u003c/a> of the report detailing an independent investigation by the law firm \u003ca href=\"https://www.bsfllp.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boies Schiller Flexner\u003c/a>.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The board of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation commissioned the investigation in April, following reports of harassment and bullying at the hands of the nonprofit’s top fundraiser, Mari Ellen Loijens. A summary of the full report substantiates many of the allegations from current and former employees in blunt terms:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>BSF’s investigation found that there were certain widespread workplace culture issues at SVCF, including a fear of speaking out or reporting workplace issues out of concern for retaliation, as well as a distrust of HR leadership. The top-down, “command-and-control” management style of SVCF’s formerCEO and former senior development executive contributed to this environment.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>There were other workplace culture issues at SVCF that were not as widespread, but that were serious and affected many employees. These included sexual, racial, crude, and otherwise inappropriate remarks and conduct that became “normalized” within certain divisions, as well as public shaming and bullying behavior exhibited at times by certain former SVCF executives. Unacceptable behavior by certain former SVCF executives was often inadequately addressed or overlooked. Many employees (including other SVCF executives) reported feeling that certain former SVCF executives were“untouchable” regardless of their actions. When complaints were raised to HR or SVCF leaders, the systems put in place frequently failed to sufficiently address inappropriate conduct and ensure that appropriate remedial action was taken. Instead, employees were left with the impression that if they did not like the workplace culture, they were free to“get off the bus.” This evidently led some current and former employees to feel that they had no other option but to address workplace concerns in the press or write a letter directly to the Board.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>The Board acknowledged that, “This failure happened under our watch.” Also, “We are deeply sorry to our entire community, especially our past and present employees.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

This is pure cowardice. There’s a full report they aren’t releasing after promising full transparency. Plus why should he (or she) still benefit after promoting a culture of fear and intimidation for 11 years? Mediocrity is not acceptable,” Dupras wrote to KQED.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“The departures of Dr. Carson and other senior staff people are certainly step one in the healing process,” wrote Daniel Hoebeke, who was the Foundation’s Director of Planned Giving for all of five months. “My heart continues to go out, however, to the many, many individuals who suffered under their leadership. The permanent damage to their reputations and the stain on their resumes remains problematic.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Carson led the Foundation’s growth from the 2007 merger of two smaller community foundations. These days, the foundation’s assets total $13.5 billion, making it the third largest philanthropy in the United States. Carson was handsomely rewarded for that growth, making an annual salary of \u003ca href=\"https://www.philanthropy.com/article/Top-Earners-Among/242554\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nearly $900,000\u003c/a>.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Much of that growth was credited to Loijens, the Foundation’s chief business, development and brand officer. She resigned a day after a scathing report in the Chronicle of Philanthropy accused her of routinely bullying her staff and making sexually inappropriate remarks. It was that exposé, and subsequent publicity, that led the Foundation’s board of directors to act.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In a statement, Carson wrote:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>Guided by a board willing to take bold risks and a highly dedicated and committed staff who believed no challenge was beyond their capabilities, we achieved our goals beyond anyone’s dreams, including my own. SVCF charted an entirely new course recognizing that in an increasingly global society, individual and corporate donors have geographically diverse charitable interests and desire a single philanthropic institution through which to achieve their goals. "content": "\u003cp>The head of the \u003ca href=\"https://www.siliconvalleycf.org/blog/announcements/leadership-update-svcf-board-directors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Silicon Valley Community Foundation\u003c/a> was placed on administrative leave Thursday, as the $13 billion dollar non-profit copes with allegations about the toxicity of its workplace culture.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> \u003c/span>\u003cb>\u003c/b>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The organization’s Board of Directors voted to place President and CEO Emmett Carson on leave while two outside law firms follow up on an exposé published last week in the \u003ca href=\"https://www.philanthropy.com/article/A-Star-Performer-Created-a/243159\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u003ci>Chronicle of Philanthropy\u003c/i>\u003c/a>. Carson will continue to receive his annual salary of $892,689. (With annual compensation of $865,715 in 2015, Carson is the highest-paid community foundation CEO in the country, according to a \u003cem>Chronicle\u003c/em> \u003ca href=\"https://www.philanthropy.com/article/Top-Earners-Among/242554\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report\u003c/a>.) Founding Board member and prior Chair Greg Avis was appointed interim CEO in the meantime.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>While the \u003cem>Chronicle\u003c/em> article focused on Carson’s second-in-command, Mari Ellen Loijens, dozens of current and former employees stepped forward to claim Carson condoned and even encouraged her bullying behavior because she was a talented fundraiser. She has since resigned.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Loijens helped to raise billions of dollars from the likes of Mark Zuckerberg, Priscilla Chan, Dustin Moskovitz and Cari Tuna. You simply cannot have this kind of extreme behavior happening for 11 years and claim you did not know. The board needs to move quickly to remedy this failure of leadership. Carson will continue to receive his annual salary of $892,689. (With annual compensation of $865,715 in 2015, Carson is the highest-paid community foundation CEO in the country, according to a \u003cem>Chronicle\u003c/em> \u003ca href=\"https://www.philanthropy.com/article/Top-Earners-Among/242554\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report\u003c/a>.) Founding Board member and prior Chair Greg Avis was appointed interim CEO in the meantime.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>While the \u003cem>Chronicle\u003c/em> article focused on Carson’s second-in-command, Mari Ellen Loijens, dozens of current and former employees stepped forward to claim Carson condoned and even encouraged her bullying behavior because she was a talented fundraiser. She has since resigned.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Loijens helped to raise billions of dollars from the likes of Mark Zuckerberg, Priscilla Chan, Dustin Moskovitz and Cari Tuna. Dupras said Carson was well aware of the problems detailed in the \u003cem>Chronicle\u003c/em>. “It’s been going on for a decade. Either he is clueless and ineffective, which I don’t believe is true. Or he’s been ignoring it,” Dupras said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“While [the] investigation was first launched following allegations of sexual harassment by one individual, it has since become clear that we may have a larger culture issue that needs to be addressed,” board chair Samuel Johnson Jr. wrote in a statement earlier this week. “This includes evaluating how teams are managed, what type of working environment is being fostered and confirming that we are the type of organization where reports of misconduct are met with swift and just action.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>It remains to be seen whether the Foundation’s donors maintain enough faith in the organization to stick with it through this crisis — and/or choose to give it more money as the investigations continue.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Donor Steve Kirsch made his concerns public in a letter to the editor in the \u003cem>San Jose Mercury News:\u003c/em>\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>I am dismayed at the recent revelations of a toxic work environment and I find it hard to believe the CEO wasn’t aware of what was taking place.
