"content": "\u003cp>The challenge of shaping Carl Bean’s altogether remarkable life into a \u003ca href=\"https://www.kqed.org/arts/tag/documentaries\">documentary\u003c/a> is that there was \u003cem>just so much of it\u003c/em>. Instead of a climactic triumph or peak period that \u003cem>\u003ca href=\"https://www.frameline.org/films/frameline49/i-was-born-this-way\">I Was Born This Way\u003c/a>\u003c/em> could build up to and fade out from, the gay gospel-steeped singer-turned-minister was a force for decades. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[aside postID='arts_13976029']Hallelujah for Bean and the thousands of people he touched. But it made the job of crafting a dramatic narrative from Bean’s lifelong journey tougher for filmmakers Daniel Junge (\u003cem>Saving Face\u003c/em>) and Sam Pollard (\u003cem>Sammy Davis, Jr.: I’ve Gotta Be Me\u003c/em> and \u003cem>Max Roach: The Drum Also Waltzes\u003c/em>). Their solution was to maintain the musical beat all the way through, and to showcase Questlove, Billy Porter and Lady Gaga out of the gate to establish Dean’s bona fides for 2025 audiences.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cem>I Was Born This Way\u003c/em>, which premiered earlier this month at the Tribeca Film Festival ahead of its West Coast premiere Thursday, June 19 in \u003ca href=\"https://www.frameline.org/\">Frameline49\u003c/a> (aka the San Francisco International LGBTQ+ Film Festival) takes its name from the openly gay anthem sung by Bean that galvanized discos in 1977. It’s the kind of song that makes the world’s worries melt away — fitting for a San Francisco disco star who became an icon of queer, Black freedom while conquering the Billboard charts.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Even at a time when queer identity was heavily stigmatized, Sylvester never switched up his glittery, androgynous style despite industry pressure. It paid off: Sylvester counted David Bowie among his fans. And in 1979, he sold out San Francisco’s War Memorial Opera House, where then-Mayor Dianne Feinstein presented him the key to the city during his performance with a 26-piece orchestra.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Never-before-heard audio from that night appears on Sylvester’s posthumous new album, \u003ca href=\"https://craftrecordings.com/products/live-at-the-war-memorial-opera-house-3lp\">\u003cem>Live From the Opera House\u003c/em>\u003c/a>, which arrives Sept. 6 on Craft Recordings.
