And getting hacked.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Yo is a simple app with little apparent first-glance reason for existing. Install it on your smartphone. Create an account. Connect with friends. Then send them this message: “Yo.” Over and over again. That’s all there is to it.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Compelling.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Yo buzz comes from stories earlier this week that disclosed the creators of this oddball app, with 50,000 users as of a few days ago, had raised $1 million in angel funding for their project. Here’s Yo’s Creation Myth, as recounted \u003ca href=\"http://blogs.ft.com/tech-blog/2014/06/yo-the-new-app-that-takes-simple-to-the-extreme/\" target=\"_blank\">in the Financial Times\u003c/a>:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>As is fashionable these days, Yo began as a somewhat accidental side-project of another start-up. Yo’s co-founder and chief executive Or Arbel was asked by Moshe Hogeg, chief of image-sharing app Mobli, to make an app with one big button that could call his assistant without having to pick up the phone or compose a text message. Mr Arbel, a former iOS engineer at Mobli, was working on a stealth financial start-up, Stox, and said he didn’t have time. They all walked across the street to the \u003ca href=\"http://www.precitaeyes.org/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Precita Eyes Mural Arts and Visitors Center\u003c/a>. Many of the tech workers at the event had just recently moved to the Mission District. You know — the annual event hosted by tech sector news sites TechCrunch, Gigaom and VentureBeat to celebrate success and innovation in the technology world. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Some of Oliver’s commentary in his introductory standup got a little attention: He cast a comically critical eye on gentrification and the Google bus issue. But the audience, at least, seemed to take the critique in stride, if its laughter is anything to judge by. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Here’s a partial transcript of his introduction:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>I don’t get what is happening here. Why do you need an awards ceremony in the tech industry? What more adulation — you already have almost all the money in the world. Why do you need awards as well after that? It is absolutely ridiculous!\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>You’re no longer the underdogs. It’s very important that you realize that. You’re not the scrappy people that people get behind. It used to be people in the tech industry were emotional shut-ins who you could root for. Now those days are gone. You’re pissing off an entire city. Not just with what you do at work, but how you get to work. [Lots of laughter and some cheers.] It’s not easy to do that. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I heard the latest design for your buses was to use tinted windows but reverse, with the tint on the inside, the reason being, ‘Look, I don’t mind if the peasants see me. I would rather not see them.’ \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>You’re being accused of over-gentrifying a city that was already the most expensive city to live in in America — that’s not mathematically possible! You’re gentrifying something that was already gentrified three times before you. But the audience, at least, seemed to take the critique in stride, if its laughter is anything to judge by. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Here’s a partial transcript of his introduction:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>I don’t get what is happening here. Why do you need an awards ceremony in the tech industry? What more adulation — you already have almost all the money in the world. Why do you need awards as well after that?
