"bio": "Amanda joined KQED Science’s engagement team as a Senior Audience Engagement Strategist in the spring of 2019. She has helped craft messaging around wildfires, the coronavirus pandemic, climate change and many other stories. She has also brought KQED Science to new platforms such as Reddit’s Ask Me Anything series. Prior to joining KQED Science, Amanda spent seven years as an engagement producer with Forum, KQED’s daily live call-in show. She got her start in radio at KALW's weekly call in show, City Visions, before going on to an internship and stint at NPR's Talk of the Nation.\r\n\r\nPrior to journalism, Amanda taught English at Lowell High School. She's a native of Petaluma and currently lives under the \"South San Francisco the Industrial City\" sign in South City. She believes that engagement is vital to news’s future and that good journalism listens as much as it asks questions.",

"bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. I also guest host for KQED’s \u003ci>Forum\u003c/i>, as well as the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. • I speak periodically on media, democracy and technology issues, and do voiceover work for documentaries and educational video projects. • Outside of the studio, you'll find me hiking Bay Area trails and whipping up Insta-ready meals in my kitchen. • I do not accept gifts, money, or favors from anyone connected to my reporting, I don't pay people for information, and I do not support or donate to political causes. • I strive to treat the people I report on with fairness, honesty, and respect. I also recognize there are often multiple sides to a story and work to verify information through multiple sources and documentation. If I get something wrong, I correct it.",

Matthay, featured in the video, was the only woman volunteer. She said a young patient and the child’s mother—both battling cancer—inspired her to do it.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The youngest volunteer was 14-year-old Alex Ferrand. His best friend from childhood is fighting cancer of the cheek muscle. (Both Alex and friend Sean Kelly are featured in the video.) Ferrand says it’s hard to watch his friend suffer, so he showed his support by going bald.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Almost a dozen doctors volunteered. Manteca’s \u003ca href=\"http://manteca.schoolspan.com/school/joshuacowell/index.asp\">Joshua Cowell School\u003c/a> makes its bid for culinary glory in the Dark Green and Orange Vegetables category, resting its hopes on “\u003ca href=\"http://www.mantecabulletin.com/news/archive/22089/\">Central Valley Harvest Bake\u003c/a>.” And Skyline High School weighs in with “Spanish Chickpea Stew,” a Dry Beans and Peas semifinalist.\u003cbr>\n\u003c!--more-->\u003cbr>\nYesterday, a team of taste-testing judges called on Skyline, on their way to visiting all 15 contenders before choosing three finalists in June. The public gets a chance to participate, too, by \u003ca href=\"http://www.recipesforkidschallenge.com/submissions\">voting online\u003c/a>. The final cook-off takes place at the American Culinary Federation Conference in Texas, July 25. Schools are competing for special funding for their cafeterias, not to mention gustatory acclaim. And a cookbook with all the best recipes is in the works. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Skyline team includes students, school staff, chef Jenny Huston, and nutritionist Rusty Hopewell of the Alameda County Public Health Department, who teaches after-school cooking classes. Hopewell says that forming cooperative partnerships between schools and the culinary community is one of the overall aims of the project. He attributed the success of the Skyline recipe in part to a (formerly) secret ingredient — golden raisins, which he says add sweetness to the chickpeas, onions, spinach, and tomatoes. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In school, presentation was a consideration. Perhaps, however, my research of competitors in the USDA’s \u003ca href=\"http://www.recipesforkidschallenge.com/\">Recipes for Healthy Kids\u003c/a> contest will snap these less-than-appetizing associations.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Northern California has produced two contending schools in the Final 15, whittled down from 340 around the country. Manteca’s \u003ca href=\"http://manteca.schoolspan.com/school/joshuacowell/index.asp\">Joshua Cowell School\u003c/a> makes its bid for culinary glory in the Dark Green and Orange Vegetables category, resting its hopes on “\u003ca href=\"http://www.mantecabulletin.com/news/archive/22089/\">Central Valley Harvest Bake\u003c/a>.” And Skyline High School weighs in with “Spanish Chickpea Stew,” a Dry Beans and Peas semifinalist.\u003cbr>\n\u003c!--more-->\u003cbr>\nYesterday, a team of taste-testing judges called on Skyline, on their way to visiting all 15 contenders before choosing three finalists in June. The public gets a chance to participate, too, by \u003ca href=\"http://www.recipesforkidschallenge.com/submissions\">voting online\u003c/a>. The final cook-off takes place at the American Culinary Federation Conference in Texas, July 25. Schools are competing for special funding for their cafeterias, not to mention gustatory acclaim. And a cookbook with all the best recipes is in the works. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Skyline team includes students, school staff, chef Jenny Huston, and nutritionist Rusty Hopewell of the Alameda County Public Health Department, who teaches after-school cooking classes. Hopewell says that forming cooperative partnerships between schools and the culinary community is one of the overall aims of the project. He attributed the success of the Skyline recipe in part to a (formerly) secret ingredient — golden raisins, which he says add sweetness to the chickpeas, onions, spinach, and tomatoes. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In school, presentation was a consideration. Rather than simply placing its stew among the lunchline’s prosaic pizza and ho-hum hot dogs, Skyline’s team pushed a cartful of free samples around campus to build demand. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Hopewell reports that the stew sells out whenever its on the menu.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",
