I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s Here & Now, and the BBC. I also guest host for KQED’s Forum, as well as the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. • I speak periodically on media, democracy and technology issues, and do voiceover work for documentaries and educational video projects. • Outside of the studio, you'll find me hiking Bay Area trails and whipping up Insta-ready meals in my kitchen. • I do not accept gifts, money, or favors from anyone connected to my reporting, I don't pay people for information, and I do not support or donate to political causes. • I strive to treat the people I report on with fairness, honesty, and respect. I also recognize there are often multiple sides to a story and work to verify information through multiple sources and documentation. If I get something wrong, I correct it.

UC Berkeley physics professor Saul Perlmutter was a co-winner of the Nobel Prize in physics today for his work explaining how the universe is expanding. Perlmutter led Lawrence Berkeley Lab’s Supernova Cosmology Project, which made the discovery in 1998. Each event lasted less than 5 min, for a total observation time of approximately 20 min. The fish first dug out the bivalve by fanning sand with its pectoral
fin and then took the mollusk to a rock, or coral head, where it was
crushed in a similar way to what has been described for C. schoenleinii.

The use of rock as an anvil has now been described from different places
in three genera of wrasses, the ancestral Choerodon, and the more derived
Halichoeres and Thalassoma, which span the majority of the evolutionary
history of wrasses (50 million years, Cowman et al. 2009). All observations
were similar in both the use of a rock as an anvil to open or reduce the size of
a bivalve to making it edible and the sideways movement of the head
associated with it. The similarity of the behaviors suggests that either they
emerged independently or they correspond to a deep-seated behavioral
trait. If this were the case, we predict that other wrasses are likely to also use
these forms of tools. The presence or absence of such a behavior in other
groups of fishes will determine whether the use of a rock as an anvil is
unique to wrasses or whether it can be generalized to other groups of fishes.

In a statement, Bernardi also boiled it down for the masses. The fish’s action “requires a lot of forward thinking, because there are a number of steps involved,” he said. “For a fish, it’s a pretty big deal.”

[ad fullwidth]

You can watch a better-quality version of the video here.

",

",

Berkeley College Republicans

Well I think that when you have any kind of free speech event, you have to do things that are going to warrant the attention. It's discriminatory here, and it's also discriminatory in that case. So we actually hope people will feel uncomfortable, because that's our goal. That's part of free speech, it isn't always comfortable. But we don't intend to threaten anybody, we don't intend to make anybody feel unwelcome on campus. We are more than happy to discuss this issue with anyone who would like to. I've heard a lot of criticisms that we should have had a town hall or some discussion on this, but the fact is sometimes you have to have some kind of visual image to get people's attention before you can have a good discussion on it.

We certainly don't – actually we do intend to offend people, but we intend to offend people the same way they should be offended by race-based admissions. It's discriminatory here, and it's also discriminatory in that case. So we actually hope people will feel uncomfortable, because that's our goal. That's part of free speech, it isn't always comfortable. But we don't intend to threaten anybody, we don't intend to make anybody feel unwelcome on campus.
