Tom Fitzgerald in the \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/01/13/SPF91H8HSA.DTL\">Chronicle \u003c/a>lists these attributes:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>In the past two years with Shaw as coordinator, the offense has twice broken the school record for points in a season.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A four-year letter winner as a Stanford receiver from 1991-94, the Union City native played under Dennis Green and Bill Walsh. He then spent nine years as an assistant coach in the NFL with the Eagles, Raiders and Ravens.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>He spent the 2006 season at the University of San Diego as Harbaugh’s wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator before following Harbaugh to Stanford in 2007.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In addition to his coordinator duties, Shaw coached the wide receivers for three years before switching to the running backs last season. Tom Fitzgerald in the \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/01/13/SPF91H8HSA.DTL\">Chronicle \u003c/a>lists these attributes:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>In the past two years with Shaw as coordinator, the offense has twice broken the school record for points in a season.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A four-year letter winner as a Stanford receiver from 1991-94, the Union City native played under Dennis Green and Bill Walsh. He then spent nine years as an assistant coach in the NFL with the Eagles, Raiders and Ravens.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>He spent the 2006 season at the University of San Diego as Harbaugh’s wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator before following Harbaugh to Stanford in 2007.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In addition to his coordinator duties, Shaw coached the wide receivers for three years before switching to the running backs last season. Pizzo, dean of Stanford’s School of Medicine, got wind of the ProPublica article last week, and he was not pleased. This is evidenced by the following \u003ca href=\"http://deansnewsletter.stanford.edu/archive/12_13_10.html#4\">item\u003c/a> in The Dean’s Newsletter, in which Pizzo implies that excuses he’s heard from some busted docs stretch the bounds of credulity in the same way that a teenager’s not really being clear on that Don’t-Stay-Out-Till-Six-A.M. policy does.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\nAlthough it seems implausible, I suppose it is possible that a Stanford faculty member might still be unaware of the School of Medicine Policies on Academic Industry Relationships. These policies are listed on our available website (see: http://med.stanford.edu/coi/siip/), have been widely disseminated, and I have communicated about them frequently as changes have taken place over years. Here’s just a sampling of some of those communications over years:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>(A list of 17 items follows.)\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Why am I focusing on this issue and some of my past communications about academic industry relations now? In 2010, the Congress passed legislation that requires pharmaceutical companies to disclose all payments to doctors by 2013. Seven pharmaceutical firms are now doing so, and the databases for these companies are publicly available. ProPublica, an independent, non-profit online investigative newsroom that produces journalism in the public interest, has been utilizing these databases and is running a series entitled, Dollars for Docs, What Drug Companies are Paying Your Doctor (http://www.propublica.org/topic/dollars-for-doctors).\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>We have been informed that very shortly, ProPublica will be releasing a new investigation about how pharmaceutical firms have paid academic researchers and clinicians to participate in speakers’ bureaus that market their products. Unfortunately, a small number of our faculty will be highlighted in this article.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Our preliminary investigation suggests that some of the individuals likely to be reported by ProPublica had understandable reasons for confusion about Stanford’s policies and have already addressed them and ceased activities like “speakers’ bureau” participation. \u003cem>Others, though, offered explanations why their activities continued that are difficult if not impossible to reconcile with our policy, and here we have concerns\u003c/em> (emphasis mine). Institutions like Stanford University run an office of “technology transfer” or “technology licensing,” encouraging students and faculty to innovate on-campus and let the university handle patent matters. Now, a case involving who rightfully controls patents from federally-funded academic research is headed to the U.S. Supreme Court.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Stanford is suing the pharmaceutical giant Roche over technology that tests the levels of HIV in a patient’s blood. The University says it owns the technology because it was discovered on campus. But Roche says the researcher, Mark Holodniy, signed a contract that gave the company patent rights to any products of their collaboration. \u003ca href=\"http://www.patentlyo.com/08-1509r.pdf\">The lower court’s ruling\u003c/a> killed a counterclaim from Roche because they filed it too late, the ruling also dismissed Stanford’s claim because the university did not have “standing” to accuse the company of infringement.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This kind of federally-funded research comes from the Bayh-Dole Act of 1980. In it, Congress gave universities the patent rights to inventions that result from research conducted on their campuses. Stanford is fighting Roche because licensing patents can bring big money to a university, especially if the innovation takes off. Now, a case involving who rightfully controls patents from federally-funded academic research is headed to the U.S. Supreme Court.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Stanford is suing the pharmaceutical giant Roche over technology that tests the levels of HIV in a patient’s blood. The University says it owns the technology because it was discovered on campus. But Roche says the researcher, Mark Holodniy, signed a contract that gave the company patent rights to any products of their collaboration. \u003ca href=\"http://www.patentlyo.com/08-1509r.pdf\">The lower court’s ruling\u003c/a> killed a counterclaim from Roche because they filed it too late, the ruling also dismissed Stanford’s claim because the university did not have “standing” to accuse the company of infringement.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This kind of federally-funded research comes from the Bayh-Dole Act of 1980. In it, Congress gave universities the patent rights to inventions that result from research conducted on their campuses. Stanford is fighting Roche because licensing patents can bring big money to a university, especially if the innovation takes off.
