"bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. One correction however: it was in 1994 that I floated the idea for the first time at which point the idea was also approved by the Board of Supes in 1995. The idea never achieved momentum however until Isak, independently proposed the same idea in 2009. At that point, Supervisor Dufty suggested we join forces. Since then, our combined efforts have led to renewed interest and support, resulting in last week’s announcement of the first 20 names. In this case the court wants to know whether a California proposition’s sponsors have standing when the state’s officeholders — in this case Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Attorney General Jerry Brown — decline to do so.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Amar talked about the certification legal process, and how it might play out in the Proposition 8 case. After the California Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples have a right to marry under the state constitution, opponents put a constitutional amendment on the ballot to ban such unions. After the initiative passed in 2008, the state Supreme Court ruled that it would not nullify the ban.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The cause for same-sex marriage was then taken up by high-profile lawyers \u003ca href=\"http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/02262010/profile.html\">Theodore Olsen and David Boies\u003c/a>, erstwhile opponents in the famous Bush v. Gore case. Federal District Judge Vaughn R. Walker \u003ca href=\"http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Justice/2010/0804/Prop.-8-overturned-Why-Vaughn-Walker-ruled-against-gay-marriage-ban\">ruled in their favor\u003c/a> last year, declaring that a ban on same-sex marriage violated the U.S. Constitution. However, he \u003ca href=\"http://www.kqed.org/news/usworld/legalterms.jsp#stay\">stayed\u003c/a> his ruling upon an appeal to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, which heard \u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/2010/12/07/0101206prop-8-appeal/\">oral arguments\u003c/a> in the case -- broadcast publicly -- last month.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>And in a separate order today, the court ruled that Imperial County, which joined the suit, \u003ca href=\"http://www.kqed.org/assets/pdf/news/prop80104/imperialdenied0104.pdf\">does not have standing\u003c/a> to sue.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Read the \u003ca href=\"http://blogs.kqed.org/prop8/2011/01/04/appeals-court-punts-to-buy-time/\">analysis\u003c/a> of KQED's Scott Shafer, who has been following the case from the beginning, on our Proposition 8 blog. Before this panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit is an appeal concerning the constitutionality under the United States Constitution of Article I, § 7.5 of the California Constitution (“Proposition 8”). Because we cannot consider this important constitutional question unless the appellants before us have standing to raise it, and in light of Arizonans for Official English v. After the California Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples have a right to marry under the state constitution, opponents put a constitutional amendment on the ballot to ban such unions. After the initiative passed in 2008, the state Supreme Court ruled that it would not nullify the ban.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The cause for same-sex marriage was then taken up by high-profile lawyers \u003ca href=\"http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/02262010/profile.html\">Theodore Olsen and David Boies\u003c/a>, erstwhile opponents in the famous Bush v. Gore case. Federal District Judge Vaughn R. Walker \u003ca href=\"http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Justice/2010/0804/Prop.-8-overturned-Why-Vaughn-Walker-ruled-against-gay-marriage-ban\">ruled in their favor\u003c/a> last year, declaring that a ban on same-sex marriage violated the U.S. Constitution.
