"bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. I also guest host for KQED’s \u003ci>Forum\u003c/i>, as well as the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. • I speak periodically on media, democracy and technology issues, and do voiceover work for documentaries and educational video projects. • Outside of the studio, you'll find me hiking Bay Area trails and whipping up Insta-ready meals in my kitchen. • I do not accept gifts, money, or favors from anyone connected to my reporting, I don't pay people for information, and I do not support or donate to political causes. • I strive to treat the people I report on with fairness, honesty, and respect. At the same time, as Commander in Chief, I am committed to ensuring that we understand the implications of this transition, and maintain good order and discipline within our military ranks. That is why I directed the Department of Defense earlier this year to begin preparing for a transition to a new policy. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Today’s \u003ca href=\"http://www.boston.com/news/politics/politicalintelligence/2010/11/pentagon_study.html\">report\u003c/a> confirms that a strong majority of our military men and women and their families—more than two thirds—are prepared to serve alongside Americans who are openly gay and lesbian. And for the first time since this law was enacted 17 years ago today, both the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff have publicly endorsed ending this policy.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>With our nation at war and so many Americans serving on the front lines, our troops and their families deserve the certainty that can only come when an act of Congress ends this discriminatory policy once and for all. The House of Representatives has already passed the necessary legislation. Today I call on the Senate to act as soon as possible so I can sign this repeal into law this year and ensure that Americans who are willing to risk their lives for their country are treated fairly and equally. "content": "\u003cp>Backers and opponents of \u003ca href=\"http://www.ballotpedia.org/wiki/index.php/California_Proposition_8_%282008%29\">Proposition 8\u003c/a>, California’s same-sex marriage ban, will have their day in court December 6th. The hearing will be \u003ca href=\"http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2010/11/prop-8-hearing-on-gay-marriage-will-be-filmed-by-c-span.html\">televised\u003c/a> on C-SPAN.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco this week outlined the issues they want both sides to address in the two-hour hearing (expanded from the original one hour). The hearing will be split in two — with the first half exploring whether supporters of Prop. 8 — including Imperial County — have legal standing to appeal Judge Vaughn Walker’s ruling that \u003ca href=\"http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/05/us/05prop.html\">struck down\u003c/a> the ban. In the second hour both sides will argue the constitutional questions — whether the ban on same-sex marriage passed by voters is prohibited by the U.S Constitution.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>What happens if the court decides neither Prop. 8 backers nor Imperial County have standing to appeal? Some legal experts say the Court could simply dismiss the appeal and let Judge Walker’s decision stand as is. But UC Davis Law Professor \u003ca href=\"http://www.law.ucdavis.edu/faculty/Amar/\">Vikram Amar \u003c/a>has a very different take. He thinks this could essentially erase the lower court decision leading to a default judgment in favor of the two same sex couples — allowing them to marry. In the second hour both sides will argue the constitutional questions — whether the ban on same-sex marriage passed by voters is prohibited by the U.S Constitution.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>What happens if the court decides neither Prop. 8 backers nor Imperial County have standing to appeal? Some legal experts say the Court could simply dismiss the appeal and let Judge Walker’s decision stand as is. But UC Davis Law Professor \u003ca href=\"http://www.law.ucdavis.edu/faculty/Amar/\">Vikram Amar \u003c/a>has a very different take. He thinks this could essentially erase the lower court decision leading to a default judgment in favor of the two same sex couples — allowing them to marry.
