While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. Some of the affected employees will stay on for an unspecified period of time to finish various projects, according to Yahoo.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The housecleaning marks Yahoo's sixth mass layoff in the past four years under three different CEOs. Both were nominated for acting awards, and Spencer took home the prize for best supporting actress.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Teresa Molina is a domestic worker from Mexico. She said through a translator that she has a lot in common with the Davis and Spencer characters.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"Yes, the movie was made in an entirely different time,” Molina said. \"But there’s still so many similarities to what’s going on. There’s still that basic slavery almost that’s happening. People don’t value the work; their work isn’t treated with any respect or dignity.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Molina says she has worked long days as an in-home nanny, earning just $500 dollars a month.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Enma Delgado immigrated from El Salvador to the United States eight years ago. Her three children still live in her home country with relatives. Delgado said through a translator that, like Viola Davis’ character Aibileen, she only made it through primary school. But she said she plans to send her children to college. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“In terms of breaking that cycle,” Delgado said, \"like, [my] grandmother was a domestic worker, [my] mother was a domestic worker, now [I’m] a domestic worker. But it’s really important for [me], for [my] children to be able to do something else. She says that as a single mother of a 5-year-old boy she takes the campaign personally.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“You’ve got all the odds against you,” St. Laurent says. “But I keep continually fighting for what I believe in and that’s an education. But at the same time, living on minimum wage, I am not adequately making enough to provide for my son.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>St. Laurent, who was among the first to sign the petition, says it’s nearly impossible for someone earning minimum wage to live in Silicon Valley. She thinks it’s significant that students created the petition.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“It’s all about social action,” St. Laurent says. “We are the people. We need to speak out and become leaders. It’s not one person speaking out.
