"bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. I also guest host for KQED’s \u003ci>Forum\u003c/i>, as well as the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. • I speak periodically on media, democracy and technology issues, and do voiceover work for documentaries and educational video projects. • Outside of the studio, you'll find me hiking Bay Area trails and whipping up Insta-ready meals in my kitchen. • I do not accept gifts, money, or favors from anyone connected to my reporting, I don't pay people for information, and I do not support or donate to political causes. • I strive to treat the people I report on with fairness, honesty, and respect. "content": "\u003cp>Both the \u003ca href=\"http://www.seiu-uhw.org/\">SEIU\u003c/a> and the \u003ca href=\"http://www.nuhw.org/\">NUHW\u003c/a>, the two unions that have been fighting over the right to represent Kaiser health care workers, told KQED’s Rachel Dornhelm a National Labor Relations Board hearing scheduled for today has been postponed until next Monday.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Jon Borsos of NUHW says NUHW asked for the extension.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In October, NUHW, which \u003ca href=\"http://www.nuhw.org/about/\">splintered\u003c/a> from SEIU in 2009, lost an election to decertify the larger union as the representative of 43,000 Kaiser workers in California, gaining just 37 percent of ballots cast. They lived in Berkeley, where Mr. LaLanne described himself as a skinny, pimply kid addicted to sugar.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>His behavioral problems were extreme. He attacked his brother, attempted suicide and tried to burn down his house. His overweight father died of a heart attack at 50.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I was “a miserable goddamn kid,” Mr. LaLanne told The Chronicle. “It was like hell.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Then he heard a speech at the Oakland Women’s City Club by Paul Bragg, who opened the nation’s first health-food store…\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In 1936, he opened Jack LaLanne’s Physical Culture Studio in Oakland. Business was slow, so Mr. LaLanne offered massages to get people in the door. Once they started weight lifting, he would suggest routines and call them on the phone if they missed two or more workouts.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“How am I gonna help you if you’re not here?” he would ask.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In 1951, he started a live exercise show on KGO-TV in San Francisco. The “Jack LaLanne Show” went national in 1959 and ran for 34 years in the United States and Europe.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Mr. LaLanne became known for great feats of strength. At 40, he towed a 2,000-pound cabin cruiser as he swam the Golden Gate Channel. When he was 42, he did a record 1,033 pushups in 23 minutes.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>When he was 60, Mr. LaLanne swam from Alcatraz to Fisherman’s Wharf – while handcuffed, shackled and towing a boat.
