In a newsroom career that began in Chicago in 1972, Dan has worked for \u003cem>The San Francisco Examiner,\u003c/em> Wired and TechTV and has been published in The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, Business 2.0, Salon and elsewhere.\r\n\r\nSince joining KQED in 2007, Dan has reported, edited and produced both radio and online features and breaking news pieces. He has shared as both editor and reporter in four Society of Professional Journalists Norcal Excellence in Journalism awards and one Edward R. Murrow regional award. "bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. I also guest host for KQED’s \u003ci>Forum\u003c/i>, as well as the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. • I speak periodically on media, democracy and technology issues, and do voiceover work for documentaries and educational video projects. • Outside of the studio, you'll find me hiking Bay Area trails and whipping up Insta-ready meals in my kitchen. • I do not accept gifts, money, or favors from anyone connected to my reporting, I don't pay people for information, and I do not support or donate to political causes. • I strive to treat the people I report on with fairness, honesty, and respect. I also recognize there are often multiple sides to a story and work to verify information through multiple sources and documentation. If I get something wrong, I correct it.",

And he's not the only one who has seen a hefty bump in pay at Caltrain, where both administrators and train workers have enjoyed pay raises in recent years.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Caltrain struck back today in the form of a \u003ca href=\"http://www.publicceo.com/index.php/local-governments/151-local-governments-publicceo-exclusive/2560-caltrain-and-san-mateo-county-transit-district-fight-qinaccuraciesq\">\u003cstrong>press release\u003c/strong>\u003c/a> from spokeswoman Christine Dunn, who wrote this:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>A Bay Area News Group story that appears in newspapers and online today on the compensation of transit executive Mike Scanlon contains several critical factual errors and misrepresentations.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>We are deeply disappointed in the poor quality of reporting contained in this story, and the fundamental inaccuracies that occurred despite our continuing efforts to assist BANG in understanding Mr. Scanlon's compensation.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>FUNDAMENTAL MISTAKES\u003cbr>\nThe headline and the news story text describe Caltrain as paying Mr. Scanlon a salary of $400,668.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This is simply inaccurate. Caltrain does not pay Mr. Scanlon a salary of more than $400,000. The total compensation paid to Mr. Scanlon on behalf of Caltrain under his contract is, in fact, $85,647.\u003c/p>\n\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>The release then goes on to explain that Scanlon fills \"three jobs in one.\" \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>Mr. Scanlon is an employee of the San Mateo County Transit District, with whom he has an employment contract.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Under the terms of that contract, Mr. Scanlon holds three positions:\u003cbr>\n-- General Manager and CEO of the San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans);\u003cbr>\n-- Executive Director of the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board (JPB), which owns and manages Caltrain;\u003cbr>\n-- Executive Director of the San Mateo County Transportation Authority (TA).\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Each agency is a separate entity with its own board of directors, its own budget and its own set of distinct responsibilities.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"Mike serves three agencies in one job, each agency is different and there are different demands on the leadership of each agency,\" said former SamTrans Board member and Caltrain Chair Jim Hartnett.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"The bottom line is that it is a bargain for the taxpayers -- it is cheaper, more efficient and more productive to have one person at the helm of all three rather than three separate people. And he's not the only one who has seen a hefty bump in pay at Caltrain, where both administrators and train workers have enjoyed pay raises in recent years.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Caltrain struck back today in the form of a \u003ca href=\"http://www.publicceo.com/index.php/local-governments/151-local-governments-publicceo-exclusive/2560-caltrain-and-san-mateo-county-transit-district-fight-qinaccuraciesq\">\u003cstrong>press release\u003c/strong>\u003c/a> from spokeswoman Christine Dunn, who wrote this:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>A Bay Area News Group story that appears in newspapers and online today on the compensation of transit executive Mike Scanlon contains several critical factual errors and misrepresentations.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>We are deeply disappointed in the poor quality of reporting contained in this story, and the fundamental inaccuracies that occurred despite our continuing efforts to assist BANG in understanding Mr. Scanlon's compensation.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>FUNDAMENTAL MISTAKES\u003cbr>\nThe headline and the news story text describe Caltrain as paying Mr. Scanlon a salary of $400,668.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This is simply inaccurate. Caltrain does not pay Mr. Scanlon a salary of more than $400,000. The total compensation paid to Mr. Scanlon on behalf of Caltrain under his contract is, in fact, $85,647.\u003c/p>\n\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>The release then goes on to explain that Scanlon fills \"three jobs in one.\" \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>Mr. Scanlon is an employee of the San Mateo County Transit District, with whom he has an employment contract.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Under the terms of that contract, Mr. Scanlon holds three positions:\u003cbr>\n-- General Manager and CEO of the San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans);\u003cbr>\n-- Executive Director of the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board (JPB), which owns and manages Caltrain;\u003cbr>\n-- Executive Director of the San Mateo County Transportation Authority (TA).\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Each agency is a separate entity with its own board of directors, its own budget and its own set of distinct responsibilities.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"Mike serves three agencies in one job, each agency is different and there are different demands on the leadership of each agency,\" said former SamTrans Board member and Caltrain Chair Jim Hartnett.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"The bottom line is that it is a bargain for the taxpayers -- it is cheaper, more efficient and more productive to have one person at the helm of all three rather than three separate people. With more people driving instead of taking the train, more car accidents will occur, Scanlon said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"The fact is that more people will die,\" he said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Scanlon said public perceptions of where funding comes from make it hard to make the case for saving public transit.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"Our society quite frankly is unenlightened.
