"content": "\u003cp>(AP) Nevada drivers could soon be sharing the road with vehicles that don't need them.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Department of Motor Vehicles officials said Monday they've issued Google the nation's first license to test self-driving cars on public streets, after conducting demonstrations on the Las Vegas Strip and in Carson City that show the car is as safe -- or perhaps safer -- than a human.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"It gets honked at more often because it's being safe,\" said Nevada DMV Director Bruce Breslow.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Self-driving vehicle technology works like autopilot to guide a car -- in this case a modified Prius -- with little or no intervention from a human operator.\u003c/p>\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align: center\">\u003ciframe width=\"480\" height=\"274\" src=\"http://www.youtube.com/embed/cdgQpa1pUUE\" frameborder=\"0\">\u003c/iframe>\u003c/div>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Laser radar mounted on the roof and in the grill detects pedestrians, cyclists and other vehicles, creating a virtual buffer zone around the obstacles that the car then avoids.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>While some envision the robotic car dropping off its operator at the front of the mall and hunting for a parking spot on its own, Breslow said not so fast.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Nevada's regulations require two people in the test cars at all times. One person is behind the wheel, while the other person monitors a computer screen that shows the car's planned route and keeps tabs on roadway hazards and traffic lights.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>If there's a glitch, the human driver can override the autonomous auto with a tap on the brake or a hand on the steering wheel.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Last summer, Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval took the car for a spin in and around the state's quiet capital city.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But Las Vegas Boulevard, where costumed superheroes routinely take the crosswalks and massive billboards angle for the attention of starry-eyed tourists, was perhaps best suited to test the car's main purpose.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"They're designed to avoid distracted driving,\" Breslow said. \"When you're on the Strip and there's a huge truck with three scantily clad women on the side, the car only sees a box.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So far, Google's applied to license three test vehicles. The fire was small and had burned itself out before fire officials arrived on the scene, he said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Authorities cordoned off the area about a block in each direction from the bus yard, and evacuated nearby businesses and Emery Secondary School at 47th Street and San Pablo Avenue, Johnson said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>There were no injuries connected to the leak or fire, and no damage to surrounding property. Brown installed Dan Richard, an official with political and transportation industry connections, as new board chairman.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>More importantly, the California High-Speed Rail Authority dramatically revamped its business plan, slashing as much as \u003ca href=\"http://californiawatch.org/dailyreport/new-bullet-train-plan-shaves-30b-cost-15598\" target=\"_blank\">$30 billion\u003c/a> from the price tag for building the San Francisco-to-Los Angeles system – from $98 billion to as little as $68 billion.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But none of those changes addressed what a panel of outside financial experts has styled “the elephant in the room” for California’s proposed high-speed rail system – its extraordinarily low projected operating costs.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>If the bullet train project is to pencil out, it must operate far more economically than any high-speed rail system in the world, according to the experts, who include former World Bank executive William Grindley.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Unless these extraordinary economies actually are achieved, the train will require alarmingly high annual operating subsidies “forever,” as the experts wrote in a \u003ca href=\"http://www.cc-hsr.org/\" target=\"_blank\">report\u003c/a> last month. The annual operating deficit could top $2 billion, they wrote. \u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The rail authority disputes the experts’ conclusions. The issue is of crucial importance, because by law, the state is forbidden from subsidizing the bullet train.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“We showed that their (projected) operating costs and revenue costs per mile were significantly lower than what anybody anywhere in the world had ever been able to achieve,” said Alan Bushell, a retired technology executive and co-author of the study. Andrew Greenwood, Investigations Division Commander:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>On 4/25/12, at about 4:30 PM, two bicycle riders riding east on Tunnel Road were struck by a black vehicle driving east on Tunnel Road. The driver of the black vehicle did not stop after the collision, as required by law. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>One of the riders had a camera mounted on his handlebars, and the collision was captured on video. That video is on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3LatOGCWVc and has shown up on other websites as well.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The riders, both of whom were wearing helmets, suffered from abrasions from the contact with the roadway, but did not require hospitalization for their injuries. A passerby called 9-1-1, and the riders were seen and treated by Oakland Fire. Their clothing and bicycles were significantly damaged as a result of the collision.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The riders reported the collision at the Berkeley Police Department Wednesday later that evening. Officers began their investigation of the incident. This investigation included review of the video, as well as action on a number of investigative leads. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Due to the ongoing, active nature of the investigation, we are not at this time able to share or confirm specific information regarding our efforts. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Finally, we note the video has had over 21,000 hits on YouTube as of this afternoon, along with over 175 comments.
