"bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. It's called \"\u003ca href=\"http://news.yahoo.com/h-ps-ceo-whitman-imperfect-fit-211332790.html\">As H-P's CEO, Whitman an imperfect fit\u003c/a>.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\n\u003cp>Hewlett-Packard Co.'s decision to fire CEO Leo Apotheker after just 11 months and replace him with former eBay chief Meg Whitman is another dizzying turn of the executive merry-go-round at a company whose leadership issues are tearing it apart.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Swapping Apotheker, who has now been ousted from two high-profile CEO jobs in two years, with Whitman, a billionaire who is best known for the decade she spent building eBay and her run for California governor, is a decision designed to stem investor fury over a series of questionable strategy moves.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Whitman's star-power could be an asset for a company that struggled to gain credibility under Apotheker, who was previously little-known outside of the business software world. HP is no stranger to celebrity CEOs. Lane gave the following emotional response: \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"I'm going to give you an answer right from my heart. It's going to come right directly from my heart.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"In January I added five board members to this board. This is not the board that was around for \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pretexting#Pretexting\">pretexting\u003c/a>. This is not the board that fired Mark Hurd. This is not the board that did everything you want to write about that the press writes about every day. It's just like open season to write about this board. From \u003ca href=\"http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/22/business/voting-to-hire-a-chief-without-meeting-him.html\">James B. Stewart in today's NY Times\u003c/a>:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>Interviews with several current and former directors and people close to them involved in the search that resulted in the hiring of Mr. Apotheker reveal a board that, while composed of many accomplished individuals, as a group was rife with animosities, suspicion, distrust, personal ambitions and jockeying for power that rendered it nearly dysfunctional.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Among their revelations: when the search committee of four directors narrowed the candidates to three finalists, no one else on the board was willing to interview them. And when the committee finally chose Mr. Apotheker and again suggested that other directors meet him, no one did. Remarkably, when the 12-member board voted to name Mr. Apotheker as the successor to the recently ousted chief executive, Mark Hurd, most board members had never met Mr. Apotheker. \u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>HP shares were down \u003ca href=\"http://www.google.com/finance?client=ob&q=NYSE:HPQ\">nearly five percent\u003c/a> on the market today. \u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>One person who thinks the move is just swell: Carly Fiorina, one of Whitman's predecessors as HP CEO and her co-loser last November in big statewide elections. She conveyed her congrats today via Tweet:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>http://twitter.com/#!/CarlyforCA/status/116989382564659200\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In terms of Whitman's political career, or lack of it, KQED Sacramento Bureau Chief John Myers says that when he talked to her shortly after the gubernatorial election, she seemed hesitant to ever run for office again. Myers says today's announcement feels like an affirmation of that. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cem>Update 3:35p.m.\u003c/em> Check out this \u003ca href=\"http://www.cringely.com/2011/02/why-leo-apotheker-will-be-fired-from-hewlett-packard/\">prediction from tech psychic Robert Cringely\u003c/a>, dated Feb 23, 2011.\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>I don’t think Leo Apotheker is going to survive long as CEO of Hewlett Packard. This is not based on any inside information, just my own pondering. And when Apotheker does go down, I’m pretty sure I know who will take his place...\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Then there’s Meg Whitman, who expected at this point to have resigned from the HP board to spend all her time running California as governor. But that didn’t happen, so now what is she to do? You can only get so many pedicures. She’ll eventually get around to hip-checking Apotheker and taking his job. And when the committee finally chose Mr. Apotheker and again suggested that other directors meet him, no one did. It offers a larger, personalized picture at the top, kind of like what newspapers would call a \"masthead,\" followed by a running summation of all your posts, pictures, maps and activities. The most important things would stand out, as judged by the site's new algorithms, though everything would be available, per your privacy settings (which Zuckerberg did not talk much about during his keynote).\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"Timeline is the story of your life,\" Zuckerberg said, \"and it has three pieces: all your stories, all your apps, and a new way to express who you are.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Last week marked the first time that the site's traffic reached a half billion daily users.
