"bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. I also guest host for KQED’s \u003ci>Forum\u003c/i>, as well as the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. • I speak periodically on media, democracy and technology issues, and do voiceover work for documentaries and educational video projects. • Outside of the studio, you'll find me hiking Bay Area trails and whipping up Insta-ready meals in my kitchen. • I do not accept gifts, money, or favors from anyone connected to my reporting, I don't pay people for information, and I do not support or donate to political causes. • I strive to treat the people I report on with fairness, honesty, and respect. I also recognize there are often multiple sides to a story and work to verify information through multiple sources and documentation. If I get something wrong, I correct it.",

"content": "\u003cp>SAN FRANCISCO -- (AP) Amazon.com Inc. wants California voters to decide whether to overturn a new law that forces online retailers to collect sales taxes there.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A petition for a referendum was filed Friday with the state Attorney General's Office so that voters can decide on the requirement, which was included in a state budget signed into law in late June.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The new law forces online retailers to collect California sales taxes by expanding the definition of having a physical presence in the state. The requirement now kicks in if an online retailer has a related company, such as a marketing or product-development arm, or affiliates in the state — individuals and companies that earn commissions by referring visitors to Amazon from their websites.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Passage of the law, which is projected to help the state collect an additional $200 million annually, adds California to a growing list of states that have turned to such measures in hopes of bringing in more tax revenue. Its legislature passed a similar law in 2009, but then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed it. \u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Billions of dollars are at stake as a growing number of states look for ways to generate more revenue without violating a 1992 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that prohibits them from forcing businesses to collect sales taxes unless the business has a physical presence, such as a store, in that state. When consumers order from out-of-state retailers, they're supposed to pay the tax that is due, but they rarely do and it's difficult to enforce.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>States are trying to get around the Supreme Court restriction by passing laws that broaden the definition of a physical presence. Online retailers, meanwhile, are resisting being deputized as tax collectors.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Amazon had thousands of affiliates in California, which received fees varying from 4 percent to 15 percent of each sale they brought to the company. Amazon, which is based in Seattle, cut ties with them after the law's passage.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Paul Misener, Amazon's vice president of public policy, said the referendum supports \"jobs and investment in California.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"At a time when businesses are leaving California, it is important to enact policies that attract and encourage business, not drive it away,\" he said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Overstock.com Inc. also has cut ties to California affiliates because of the law.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>According to the Performance Marketing Association, there are 200,000 affiliates across the country, 25,000 of which are located in California.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Amazon also has dropped affiliates in Arkansas, Connecticut and Illinois after similar sales-tax collection laws were passed there. Overstock, which is based in Salt Lake City, also has shuttered its affiliate programs in several states due to the laws.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Amazon does collect sales taxes in North Dakota, Kansas, Kentucky and its home state of Washington. "content": "\u003cdiv class=\"post-body\">\u003cp>\u003cp>SAN FRANCISCO -- (AP) Amazon.com Inc. wants California voters to decide whether to overturn a new law that forces online retailers to collect sales taxes there.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A petition for a referendum was filed Friday with the state Attorney General's Office so that voters can decide on the requirement, which was included in a state budget signed into law in late June.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The new law forces online retailers to collect California sales taxes by expanding the definition of having a physical presence in the state. The requirement now kicks in if an online retailer has a related company, such as a marketing or product-development arm, or affiliates in the state — individuals and companies that earn commissions by referring visitors to Amazon from their websites.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Passage of the law, which is projected to help the state collect an additional $200 million annually, adds California to a growing list of states that have turned to such measures in hopes of bringing in more tax revenue. Its legislature passed a similar law in 2009, but then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed it. \u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Billions of dollars are at stake as a growing number of states look for ways to generate more revenue without violating a 1992 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that prohibits them from forcing businesses to collect sales taxes unless the business has a physical presence, such as a store, in that state. When consumers order from out-of-state retailers, they're supposed to pay the tax that is due, but they rarely do and it's difficult to enforce.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

Online retailers, meanwhile, are resisting being deputized as tax collectors.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Amazon had thousands of affiliates in California, which received fees varying from 4 percent to 15 percent of each sale they brought to the company. Amazon, which is based in Seattle, cut ties with them after the law's passage.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Paul Misener, Amazon's vice president of public policy, said the referendum supports \"jobs and investment in California.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"At a time when businesses are leaving California, it is important to enact policies that attract and encourage business, not drive it away,\" he said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Overstock.com Inc. also has cut ties to California affiliates because of the law.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>According to the Performance Marketing Association, there are 200,000 affiliates across the country, 25,000 of which are located in California.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Amazon also has dropped affiliates in Arkansas, Connecticut and Illinois after similar sales-tax collection laws were passed there. Overstock, which is based in Salt Lake City, also has shuttered its affiliate programs in several states due to the laws.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Amazon does collect sales taxes in North Dakota, Kansas, Kentucky and its home state of Washington. It collects in New York, too, as it fights the state over a 2008 law, the first to consider local affiliates enough of an in-state presence to require sales tax collection.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003c/div>\u003c/p>",

"content": "\u003cp>Boy it’s hard to steal anything these days without winding up the subject of a worldwide manhunt conducted over the Internet. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The latest example: Someone nabbed a 1965 Picasso drawing called “Tete de Femme” (on sale for more than $200,000, according to the \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/07/06/BAPQ1K6LFE.DTL\">Chronicle\u003c/a>) from a San Francisco gallery in Union Square. That was yesterday. Today… the obligatory security video. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>At a press event today, the restaurant Lefty O’Doul’s, located next to the Weinstein Gallery on Geary Street, released the video, captured by its security cameras. The video shows the alleged thief strolling down the block with what looks to be a framed picture tucked under his arm. A gallery worker then appears, vainly searching for the man who took off in a cab, according to police.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003ca href=\"http://www.ktvu.com/video/28464379/index.html\">\u003cstrong>Watch the video\u003c/strong>\u003c/a> on KTVU, or the following KGO \u003ca href=\"http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=news/local/san_francisco&id=8234837\">report\u003c/a> from Lefty O’Doul’s:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In May, the Global Film Initiative released a \u003ca href=\"http://blog.globalfilm.org/?tag=computer-theft\">security video\u003c/a> of someone who stole equipment from its SOMA office over a five-hour period. That was yesterday. Today… the obligatory security video. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>At a press event today, the restaurant Lefty O’Doul’s, located next to the Weinstein Gallery on Geary Street, released the video, captured by its security cameras. The video shows the alleged thief strolling down the block with what looks to be a framed picture tucked under his arm.
