"bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. I also guest host for KQED’s \u003ci>Forum\u003c/i>, as well as the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. • I speak periodically on media, democracy and technology issues, and do voiceover work for documentaries and educational video projects. • Outside of the studio, you'll find me hiking Bay Area trails and whipping up Insta-ready meals in my kitchen. • I do not accept gifts, money, or favors from anyone connected to my reporting, I don't pay people for information, and I do not support or donate to political causes. • I strive to treat the people I report on with fairness, honesty, and respect. I hope that someone outside of the food community being committed to this will put a spotlight on it that will be exciting or enlightening for other people. If you go in with some friends or neighbors and get a whole animal and share it, then you can have the butcher bring it to you, and they'll divide it up into parts that you can recognize, and you can throw it in your freezer. Then you won't have to buy meat at the store for many months, and...you're paying the same price per pound for every cut of meat. Or you can join a meat-buying group, where the divvying up is done by the organization so you don't even have to go through the ordeal of arguing over who gets the pork belly.\" \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"The \u003ca href=\"http://bamcsa.ning.com\">Bay Area Meat CSA\u003c/a> is a social networking site where you join up with a group based on your location. It has thousands of members, so a lot of people are making this decision within the constraints of having a small kitchen and probably no car. "content": "\u003cp>A team of Russian and American scientists is attracting worldwide attention with a paper that finds that Japan's devastating March earthquake was preceded by marked atmospheric changes near the quake's epicenter immediately before it struck. The finding is the latest in more than a decade of research looking into the possibility that stresses in the Earth's crust before a major quake may be connected to pronounced changes in the atmosphere from the surface to its uppermost layers.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Spoiler alert:\u003c/strong> This does not mean scientists have found a way to predict earthquakes. Yet. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In a \u003ca href=\"http://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/1105/1105.2841.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">preliminary (non-peer-reviewed) paper \u003c/a>released this week in Vienna, the team working in Southern California, Maryland, and several Russian institutions said that a rise in atmospheric temperatures was recorded over the epicenter of the Tohoku earthquake, just off the northeast coast of the island of Honshu, in the days immediately before the 9.0 shake occurred on March 11. The quake and subsequent tsunami killed 24,000 people in Japan and caused damage in much of the Pacific basin. \u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The researchers are led by \u003ca href=\"http://www.chapman.edu/SCS/EES/faculty/ouzonov.asp\" target=\"_blank\">Dimitar Ouzounov\u003c/a>, an assistant professor of earth sciences at Southern California's Chapman University who also works at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Ouzounov has collaborated with others on several other papers that have documented anomalies in atmospheric conditions near quake epicenters. \u003ca href=\"http://www.mendeley.com/research/achtergronden-van-ontwikkeling-van-het-lager-onderwijs-en-van-schoolstrijd-nederland-18621905-een-poging-tot-sociaalhistorische-analyse-vrijheid-van-onderwijs-marges-het-onderwijs-maatschappelijk-perspectief-l-box-j-dronkers/\" target=\"_blank\">One paper documents \u003c/a>rising atmospheric temperatures before two California quakes in September 2004: a 6.0 quake near \u003ca href=\"http://www.parkfield.com/parkfield/\" target=\"_blank\">Parkfield\u003c/a>, on the San Andreas Fault northeast of Paso Robles, and a 5.5 tremor in \u003ca href=\"http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=509\" target=\"_blank\">Bodie\u003c/a>, north of Mono Lake. Ouzounov \u003ca href=\"http://www.csmonitor.com/Science/2011/0518/Japan-earthquake-Big-shallow-quakes-have-a-warning-signal-say-researchers\" target=\"_blank\">told the Christian Science Monitor \u003c/a> that he and his colleagues \"have crunched data for more than 100 quakes in Asia and Taiwan ... and have found similar correlations for earthquakes with magnitudes bigger than 5.5 and depths less than 31 miles.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So what exactly did the team find when they looked at the atmospheric data from the Tohoku earthquake region? In layperson's shorthand, air temperatures above the monster quake's epicenter area rose and the upper atmosphere went nuts with loose subatomic particles and escaping heat. That is, something caused temperatures to rise in the lower atmosphere; in the \u003ca href=\"http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ionosphere\" target=\"_blank\">ionosphere\u003c/a>, much higher up, an unusually high level of \u003ca href=\"http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/electron\" target=\"_blank\">electrons\u003c/a> and \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outgoing_longwave_radiation\" target=\"_blank\">outgoing long-wave radiation\u003c/a> were detected. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>What does that mean? Ouzounov et al. have seen this often enough to believe it could signal that seismic and tectonic processes--along faults that are about to rupture or at the boundaries of plates that are about to shift--have a direct linkage to these atmospheric changes. From Ouzounov's paper (citations omitted): \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\nOne of the possible explanations for this relationship is the Lithosphere-Atmosphere-Ionosphere Coupling mechanism, which provides the physical links between the different geochemical, atmospheric and ionospheric variations and tectonic activity. Briefly, the primary process is the ionization of the air produced by an increased emanation of radon (and other gases) from the Earth’s crust in the vicinity of [an] active fault. The increased radon emanation launches the chain of physical processes,which leads to changes in the conductivity of the air and a latent heat release (increasing air temperature) due to water molecules attachment (condensation) to ions.\"\n\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>Got that? If not, here's \u003ca href=\"http://www.technologyreview.com/blog/arxiv/26773/?p1=Blogs\" target=\"_bllank\">a translation\u003c/a> from the arXiv blog at MIT's Technology Review: \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>The thinking is that in the days before an earthquake, the great stresses in a fault as it is about to give cause the releases large amounts of radon.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The radioactivity from this gas ionises the air on a large scale and this has a number of knock on effects. The finding is the latest in more than a decade of research looking into the possibility that stresses in the Earth's crust before a major quake may be connected to pronounced changes in the atmosphere from the surface to its uppermost layers.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Spoiler alert:\u003c/strong> This does not mean scientists have found a way to predict earthquakes. Yet. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In a \u003ca href=\"http://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/1105/1105.2841.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">preliminary (non-peer-reviewed) paper \u003c/a>released this week in Vienna, the team working in Southern California, Maryland, and several Russian institutions said that a rise in atmospheric temperatures was recorded over the epicenter of the Tohoku earthquake, just off the northeast coast of the island of Honshu, in the days immediately before the 9.0 shake occurred on March 11. The quake and subsequent tsunami killed 24,000 people in Japan and caused damage in much of the Pacific basin. \u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The researchers are led by \u003ca href=\"http://www.chapman.edu/SCS/EES/faculty/ouzonov.asp\" target=\"_blank\">Dimitar Ouzounov\u003c/a>, an assistant professor of earth sciences at Southern California's Chapman University who also works at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Ouzounov has collaborated with others on several other papers that have documented anomalies in atmospheric conditions near quake epicenters. \u003ca href=\"http://www.mendeley.com/research/achtergronden-van-ontwikkeling-van-het-lager-onderwijs-en-van-schoolstrijd-nederland-18621905-een-poging-tot-sociaalhistorische-analyse-vrijheid-van-onderwijs-marges-het-onderwijs-maatschappelijk-perspectief-l-box-j-dronkers/\" target=\"_blank\">One paper documents \u003c/a>rising atmospheric temperatures before two California quakes in September 2004: a 6.0 quake near \u003ca href=\"http://www.parkfield.com/parkfield/\" target=\"_blank\">Parkfield\u003c/a>, on the San Andreas Fault northeast of Paso Robles, and a 5.5 tremor in \u003ca href=\"http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=509\" target=\"_blank\">Bodie\u003c/a>, north of Mono Lake. Ouzounov \u003ca href=\"http://www.csmonitor.com/Science/2011/0518/Japan-earthquake-Big-shallow-quakes-have-a-warning-signal-say-researchers\" target=\"_blank\">told the Christian Science Monitor \u003c/a> that he and his colleagues \"have crunched data for more than 100 quakes in Asia and Taiwan ... and have found similar correlations for earthquakes with magnitudes bigger than 5.5 and depths less than 31 miles.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So what exactly did the team find when they looked at the atmospheric data from the Tohoku earthquake region? In layperson's shorthand, air temperatures above the monster quake's epicenter area rose and the upper atmosphere went nuts with loose subatomic particles and escaping heat. That is, something caused temperatures to rise in the lower atmosphere; in the \u003ca href=\"http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ionosphere\" target=\"_blank\">ionosphere\u003c/a>, much higher up, an unusually high level of \u003ca href=\"http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/electron\" target=\"_blank\">electrons\u003c/a> and \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outgoing_longwave_radiation\" target=\"_blank\">outgoing long-wave radiation\u003c/a> were detected. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

Ouzounov et al. have seen this often enough to believe it could signal that seismic and tectonic processes--along faults that are about to rupture or at the boundaries of plates that are about to shift--have a direct linkage to these atmospheric changes. From Ouzounov's paper (citations omitted): \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\nOne of the possible explanations for this relationship is the Lithosphere-Atmosphere-Ionosphere Coupling mechanism, which provides the physical links between the different geochemical, atmospheric and ionospheric variations and tectonic activity. Briefly, the primary process is the ionization of the air produced by an increased emanation of radon (and other gases) from the Earth’s crust in the vicinity of [an] active fault. The increased radon emanation launches the chain of physical processes,which leads to changes in the conductivity of the air and a latent heat release (increasing air temperature) due to water molecules attachment (condensation) to ions.\"\n\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>Got that?
