"bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. Somebody, it seems, hired Burson-Marsteller, a top public-relations firm, to pitch anti-Google stories to newspapers, urging them to investigate claims that Google was invading people’s privacy. Burson even offered to help an influential blogger write a Google-bashing op-ed, which it promised it could place in outlets like The Washington Post, Politico, and The Huffington Post.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The plot backfired when the blogger turned down Burson’s offer and posted the emails that Burson had sent him. It got worse when \u003ca href=\"http://www.usatoday.com/money/media/2011-05-06-google_n.htm\" target=\"_blank\">USA Today broke a story\u003c/a> accusing Burson of spreading a “whisper campaign” about Google “on behalf of an unnamed client.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But who was the mysterious unnamed client? Yet, as I sat in my cubicle sifting through yet another \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeoCities\">Geocities\u003c/a> \"personal home page\" visually signaling its creator's fidelity to Pamela Anderson, or my tenth \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-level_marketing\">multi-level marketing\u003c/a> distributor's site of the day, I really had to wonder.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>All of which is to say: The thing we're talking about in this post? This ain't those. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Library of Congress has launched its \u003ca href=\"http://www.loc.gov/jukebox\">\u003cstrong>National Jukebox\u003c/strong>\u003c/a>, and it's the kind of project that makes you fall in love with the web all over again. From the \u003ca href=\"http://www.loc.gov/jukebox/about\">About page\u003c/a>: \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>The Library of Congress presents the National Jukebox, which makes historical sound recordings available to the public free of charge. The Jukebox includes recordings from the extraordinary collections of the Library of Congress Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation and other contributing libraries and archives. Recordings in the Jukebox were issued on record labels now owned by Sony Music Entertainment, which has granted the Library of Congress a gratis license to stream acoustical recordings.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>At launch, the Jukebox includes more than 10,000 recordings made by the Victor Talking Machine Company between 1901 and 1925. Jukebox content will be increased regularly, with additional Victor recordings and acoustically recorded titles made by other Sony-owned U.S. labels, including Columbia, OKeh, and others.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>\u003c!--more-->\u003cbr>\nYou can \u003ca href=\"http://www.loc.gov/jukebox/recordings/browse\">browse\u003c/a> by a variety of categories, including vocalist, genre, language, date, and place of recording. Regarding that last, surprise surprise, 10 entries are listed under \u003ca href=\"http://www.loc.gov/jukebox/search/results?fq=take_place%3AOakland%2C+California&page=1\">Oakland, California\u003c/a>: Give a scratchy listen to chestnuts like the Henry Halstead Orchestra's rendition of \"\u003ca href=\"http://www.loc.gov/jukebox/recordings/detail/id/7026\">That's My Girl\u003c/a>\" or The Art Landry Orchestra's \"\u003ca href=\"http://www.loc.gov/jukebox/recordings/detail/id/7026\">Rip Saw Blues\u003c/a>.\" For more local flavor, try the Peerless Quartet's 1913 recording of \"\u003ca href=\"http://www.loc.gov/jukebox/recordings/detail/id/7026\">San Francisco Bound\u003c/a>,\" written by none other than Irvin Berlin. It was sort of the web equivalent of being a file clerk, but because the medium was so new and investors were making even the mailroom guys rich, everybody in the building thought they were Bill Gates. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Back then, a lot of Big Thinkers and Web pundits used to wax eloquent about the \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_superhighway\">Information Superhighway\u003c/a> and the Limitless Potential of the Web. Yet, as I sat in my cubicle sifting through yet another \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeoCities\">Geocities\u003c/a> \"personal home page\" visually signaling its creator's fidelity to Pamela Anderson, or my tenth \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-level_marketing\">multi-level marketing\u003c/a> distributor's site of the day, I really had to wonder.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>All of which is to say: The thing we're talking about in this post? This ain't those. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Library of Congress has launched its \u003ca href=\"http://www.loc.gov/jukebox\">\u003cstrong>National Jukebox\u003c/strong>\u003c/a>, and it's the kind of project that makes you fall in love with the web all over again. From the \u003ca href=\"http://www.loc.gov/jukebox/about\">About page\u003c/a>: \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>The Library of Congress presents the National Jukebox, which makes historical sound recordings available to the public free of charge. The Jukebox includes recordings from the extraordinary collections of the Library of Congress Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation and other contributing libraries and archives. Recordings in the Jukebox were issued on record labels now owned by Sony Music Entertainment, which has granted the Library of Congress a gratis license to stream acoustical recordings.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>At launch, the Jukebox includes more than 10,000 recordings made by the Victor Talking Machine Company between 1901 and 1925. Jukebox content will be increased regularly, with additional Victor recordings and acoustically recorded titles made by other Sony-owned U.S. labels, including Columbia, OKeh, and others.\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>\u003c!--more-->\u003cbr>\nYou can \u003ca href=\"http://www.loc.gov/jukebox/recordings/browse\">browse\u003c/a> by a variety of categories, including vocalist, genre, language, date, and place of recording. Regarding that last, surprise surprise, 10 entries are listed under \u003ca href=\"http://www.loc.gov/jukebox/search/results?fq=take_place%3AOakland%2C+California&page=1\">Oakland, California\u003c/a>: Give a scratchy listen to chestnuts like the Henry Halstead Orchestra's rendition of \"\u003ca href=\"http://www.loc.gov/jukebox/recordings/detail/id/7026\">That's My Girl\u003c/a>\" or The Art Landry Orchestra's \"\u003ca href=\"http://www.loc.gov/jukebox/recordings/detail/id/7026\">Rip Saw Blues\u003c/a>.\" For more local flavor, try the Peerless Quartet's 1913 recording of \"\u003ca href=\"http://www.loc.gov/jukebox/recordings/detail/id/7026\">San Francisco Bound\u003c/a>,\" written by none other than Irvin Berlin.
