People are falling in love with chatbots. The former U.S. Surgeon General has declared social isolation a public health crisis. And journalists have dedicated countless hours to parsing the male loneliness epidemic and why Gen Z is having less sex than previous generations.
In other words: The vibes of American social life are off. Yet human beings are wired for connection, and having healthy social ties is a top indicator of longevity and a better quality of life. So for the month of August, KQED Arts & Culture is spending time with different subcultures and meetup groups where Bay Area residents are bonding over hobbies, building community and finding their people.
