"bio": "Maxine Einhorn is from London and has lived in the Bay Area for 12 years. She has worked in adult education in London,UK, for over twenty years as a tenured instructor and department manager. She has an MA in Film and TV from University of London and has taught, moderated and appraised academic work in film studies and media literacy at undergraduate and college level. She runs the ESL/ Post Secondary project at KQED which offers media-rich resources for and created by ESL educators.",

His parents traveled from Abuja, the capital of Nigeria to New York City by boat, lived in Queens, and then flew to San Francisco where they currently reside. Their story is one of success. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>However, this is not the case for many immigrant families who struggle to live in the United States. \u003cem>We All Belong Here\u003c/em> tells the amazing story of Ifeanyi’s family, but the film also glances at what it is like for most immigrants who move here. It is a struggle of economic hardship, abuse, and discrimination. On several occasions, her peers would not include her while hanging out, playing games or even sharing. This had all been attributed to the color of her skin. Roberta is African American and in the past her friends have had a problem with that. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Racism really kind of stopped me from accomplishing my goals in life because it made me think about \u003cem>is this person going to judge me because I’m black? Is this person going to make assumptions about me because of the color of my skin?\u003c/em> I kind of hide it that it don’t affect me, but it’s like when I get home it plays over and over in my head of what happened… I try to say to myself \u003cem>they’re missing out\u003c/em>, but I feel like I’m missing out on a friendship. ”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In her film \u003cem>The Skin I’m In\u003c/em>, Roberta meditates on her experiences with race in her friendships and how it affects her. She acts differently in front of her family, showing them that she is a happy girl, but inside she is angry and sad. Roberta comments on the strength of those who participated in the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Panther Party and how they have helped build a brighter future. On several occasions, her peers would not include her while hanging out, playing games or even sharing. This had all been attributed to the color of her skin. Roberta is African American and in the past her friends have had a problem with that. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Racism really kind of stopped me from accomplishing my goals in life because it made me think about \u003cem>is this person going to judge me because I’m black? Is this person going to make assumptions about me because of the color of my skin?\u003c/em> I kind of hide it that it don’t affect me, but it’s like when I get home it plays over and over in my head of what happened… I try to say to myself \u003cem>they’re missing out\u003c/em>, but I feel like I’m missing out on a friendship. ”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In her film \u003cem>The Skin I’m In\u003c/em>, Roberta meditates on her experiences with race in her friendships and how it affects her. She acts differently in front of her family, showing them that she is a happy girl, but inside she is angry and sad. Roberta comments on the strength of those who participated in the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Panther Party and how they have helped build a brighter future. But, racism still exists and at the end of the film, Roberta makes a call for action to end racism entirely.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Here’s her film \u003cem>The Skin I’m In\u003c/em>, also produced by Brianna Lyon, Zack Ledo, and Da’Shun Frelot.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

In their film, the student filmmakers wanted to express how adults think the life of teenagers “is much easier than theirs when it’s not most of the time.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The film uses dramatizations as ways to illustrate the events that lead up to Kyle’s suicide attempt as well as weaves in a blend of found online videos, images, and statistics about teen depression. Educators clearly felt it to be important to use media creatively in order to engage students and maintain currency and relevance in today’s media savvy culture.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Eager for resources, teachers visited the resource tables offered by each organization, asked questions and networked enthusiastically with media makers, keen to share what they are doing and find out about exciting new media tools. That cold spring morning, he had a plan. He was going to film a drug scene in the middle of the lesson. He had his props ready – a small mirror, a dollar bill, and powdered sugar. He sat there prepping the scene on his desk while the teacher posted material on the chalkboard, unaware of the shenanigans occurring in the back of the class. Shaq then took out his flip video camera and began filming without any disruption.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>When presenting the footage to his Peer Resources class the following week, it was obvious that the teacher had no clue what was going on. It could have been the real deal. And this aligned perfectly to Shaq’s point in his film \u003cem>We Need Help\u003c/em> that he co-produced with his classmate Stephanny. The film is about the lack of support high schools have for at-risk youth. To Shaq and Stephanny, most teachers do not know how to read the signs for help from youth who are in need of some kind of intervention. Or maybe the signs are clear, but there are a lack of resources or methods put in place. In any case, the film explores this critical issue through the lens of two fictional characters. One is a drug addict; the other is a pregnant teen. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This is one of twelve student films that were produced at Philip and Sala Burton High School in Bayview. These films were part of \u003ca href=\"http://www.pbs.org/pov/filmmakers/voicescape.php\">Project VoiceScape\u003c/a>, a partnership with Adobe Youth Voices, PBS, and POV that is aimed at encouraging middle and high school students nationwide to use digital media tools in creating compelling stories about issues and concerns important to them. At Burton, the students all picked the theme of college access as a focus for their films. The concept references financial struggles, immigration issues, lack of support, fears and anxieties. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>KQED Education also worked with students from James Lick Middle School. All of the work was done in partnership with the \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfedfund.org/programs/se_peer_resources.php\">San Francisco Ed Fund’s Peer Resources program\u003c/a>. They explored topics like depression, immigration, graffiti, video game addiction, domestic violence, and race and discrimination. Students produced incredibly poignant films about social issues that personally affect them. Through this personal lens, these films aim to express issues subjectively and do not attempt to hold any sort of objective journalistic integrity.
