Joan got her start making science television back in 1998 when she joined the team at Sea Studios in Monterey, working as a researcher and production coordinator on \u003ca href=\"http://nationalgeographic.com/channel/\">National Geographic Television\u003c/a> projects for 4 years. Following that she pursued a career in features and network television down in Los Angeles, working on seven full length feature films, three television shows and several pilots. Joan graduated in 1993 from U.C. Santa Cruz with honors in Biology, and spent several years working as a marine biologist, naturalist and SCUBA guide. Originally from San Francisco, Joan is thrilled to be home and working on QUEST, fulfilling a long-term goal of combining her interests in science and entertainment.",

As of May 2008, 293 \u003ca href=\"http://exoplanets.org/\">extrasolar planets\u003c/a> have been confirmed. Most of these planets are big, gas giants like our own Jupiter but new technology is helping astronomers get closer to finding earth sized planets. To find an extrasolar planet scientists first identify a star and then, using different methods, look to see if there is a planet, or planets, orbiting the star. It’s estimated that at least 10% of sun-like stars have planets.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Once astronomers have found an extrasolar planet, also called an exoplanet, they look to see if it is in the \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldilocks_zone#Goldilocks_phenomenon\">Goldilocks zone\u003c/a>. This is an area of space in which a planet is just the right distance from its' parent star so that the surface is neither too hot nor too cold. A habitable temperature means that the planet could possibly host liquid water, an ingredient for life.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A number of exoplanet findings have come from \u003ca href=\"http://obswww.unige.ch/~udry/planet/planet.html\">astronomy teams in Switzerland\u003c/a> and near San Jose at \u003ca href=\"http://mthamilton.ucolick.org/\">Lick Observatory\u003c/a>. Astronomers at Lick made news in the fall of 2007 when they discovered \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/55_Cancri\">55 Cancri\u003c/a>. The discovery of the five-planet system came after nearly 20 years of observations. Also in 2007, astronomers with the Geneva Extrasolar Planet Search Program discovered \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gliese_581_c\">the most earth-like planet ever found\u003c/a>. \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gliese_581_c\">Gilese 581 c\u003c/a> lies in the Goldilocks Zone, it's surface temperature ranges from an estimated 32 degrees Fahrenheit to 102 degrees Fahrenheit. The research team that discovered the new planet believes it may have a developed atmosphere and be covered with oceans.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Curious to see how astronomers hunt for extrasolar planets, I took the trip up the long, windy road to the top of Mt. Hamilton. It is a beautiful drive up to the observatory and it's wise to take your time so that you can enjoy the ideal California landscape of rolling hills dotted with oak trees and wildflowers. The 365 sharp curves along the 19 mile road will also slow you down.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>At the top of Mt. Hamilton are several white domes dotting the 4,200-foot crestline. From Lick Observatory you can see forever-- not just across the vast northern California landscape but out into our own galaxy and beyond. By coincidence, the night I was there astronomer Debra Fischer confirmed five new planets outside our solar system. The discovery was the culmination of five years of watching these specific planets from Lick's 3-meter Shane Telescope. Fischer and her colleague Geoff Marcy will publish their findings soon. These two astronomers are obsessed with looking for exoplanets, they just returned from the Andes mountains in Chile, where they spent day and night for several weeks hunting for planets. But Fischer and Marcy are not the only ones who have caught the exoplanet bug.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Scientists at NASA are nearly ready to launch a bus-sized telescope into space. \u003ca href=\"http://kepler.nasa.gov/\">NASA's Kepler Telescope\u003c/a> which will orbit our sun, will be trained on a hundred thousand stars at a time. It may be our best chance yet for finding new life in outer space. The telescope is scheduled to launch in February. Assisting QUEST Producer Amy Miller on this segment was yet another occasion to experience such a sentiment, as we found out about the amazing work of Ashok Gadgil and his colleagues to help the women and families who've been displaced as a result of the genocide in Darfur.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>For those of you who aren't familiar with the story, in 2005, Ashok Gadgil, a physicist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, led a team of four people to north and south Darfur to determine how families were cooking their meals. This may seem like an odd fact-finding mission but it had very real consequences for alleviating the suffering and violence the Darfuri women experience. Every other day, many women leave the relative safety of the refugee camps to travel six to seven hours to collect fuel wood for their meals. In the process, they risk rape and mutilation at the hands of the Janjaweed, a state-sponsored militia which has been lodged in a genocidal fight against Darfuri rebel groups pressing for more autonomy from the government in Khartoum. Three years later, Ashok Gadgil and Ken Chow of \u003ca href=\"http://www.ewb-usa.org/\">Engineers Without Borders\u003c/a> are on version eight of the Berkeley Darfur stove, an elegantly simple yet effective ten pound metal stove which is four times more efficient than the traditional three-stone fire with which the Darfur refugees have traditionally cooked. Ashok and his colleagues on the \u003ca href=\"http://www.darfurstoves.org/\">Darfur Stoves Project\u003c/a> hope to have five to six manufacturing plants operating in north, west and south Darfur, producing hundreds of thousands of stoves a year from the flat-pack kits of the stove Ken Chow has engineered.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>For me, this QUEST segment highlighted how scientists with the brilliance and dedication of Ashok Gadgil can think up solutions to problems that have the potential to alleviate suffering and help the economic lot (each stove saves roughly $250 dollars in fuel wood annually for a Darfuri family) of hundreds of thousands of people existing within the margins of survival. Fortunately, there are organizations, in addition to the Darfur Stoves Project, that are also helping to get more stoves into the hands of Darfuri refugees, including \u003ca href=\"https://shop.thehungersite.com/store/item.do?siteId=220&itemId=31012&origin=1704\">The Hunger Site\u003c/a>, \u003ca href=\"http://www.globalgiving.com/pr/1700/proj1632a.html\">Global Giving\u003c/a>, The Child Health Site. "content": "\u003cp>I first met \u003ca href=\"http://www.wam-v.com/\" target=\"_blank\">Ugo Conti\u003c/a> a number of years ago when we discussed an inflatable boat he had designed to sail from the San Francisco Bay to Hawaii. This adventure was born from Conti's passion for the sea and was somewhat of a follow up to the round-the-world sailing adventures he took with his young family decades before. I think it takes someone with a lot of self-assuredness to quit their job, buy a sail boat, load up their family, and sail off into the big blue with relatively limited sailing experience.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The funny thing is, Mr. Conti actually claims to be a \"coward.\" He even named that first boat \"Phobos\" after the god of fear. He quickly adds, though, that the fear he felt was actually one of the things that kept him safe. He approached sailing around the world from the perspective of an engineer... and then he over-engineered the situation to be doubly or triply safe. As Mr. Conti told me, \"If you go at sea, and with other things in life too, either you are an expert, or you're scared. If you are both, it's even better. If you're not one of those two, any sailing endeavor becomes very dangerous. If you're scared, or you're so worried about everything, then you're very careful. And so you can go into difficult situations because you are careful. If you're not scared and you're not an expert, if you go to sea you'll get clobbered, and maybe even die.\" He continued, \"but by going through that, you face, but not conquer, fear. They say it's a courageous person that goes on despite the fear, not somebody that is not fearful. Because that person is an idiot.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I have been lucky to meet many unconventional thinkers who have changed the world by \"thinking outside the box.\" That term has become a cliché. But when I spoke with Mr. Conti, I saw a person who has never seen \"the box.\" It seems as though each of his projects starts with a clean slate and he borrows little from collective engineering standards. He designs boats but does not claim to be a marine engineer. One thing he told me that I found very interesting was how someday \"someone is going to invent a powerful engine, something that runs on water, air or some unlimited resource and makes no pollution. This will kill the combustion engine and every car, boat, train, airplane and power-plant will be generating power in a completely clean way. The person who invents that machine will not be someone from the car industry or anyone who studied combustion engines or conventional engineering.\" True groundbreaking progress comes from outsiders who don’t follow the pack.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n",

This type of instrument is essentially \u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/quest/2008/01/09/catching-rainbows-from-distant-galaxies/\">a blend between a traditional imaging camera and a spectrograph\u003c/a>.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The resolution in an integral field spectrograph is defined in \u003cem>spaxels \u003c/em>instead of the pixels that have become all too familiar with the advent of digital cameras. A spaxel is quite similar to a pixel, there aren't nearly as many and each one carries at least \u003cem>a 1000 times as much information\u003c/em>.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In your digital camera, the light passes through the lens and directly onto the CCD. Each pixel on the CCD counts the number of photons in the red, the blue, and the green. Last week I participated in my eighth ACI national conference. The annual conference is where I go to network; learn about all aspects of home performance; recruit authors for Home Energy Magazine; and best of all, be inspired.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Here are a few of the people that I ran into last week who inspire me:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Don Fugler \u003c/strong>does research through the \u003ca href=\"http://www.cmhc-schl.gc.ca/\">Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation\u003c/a>. He developed the \u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/quest/2007/04/20/energy-efficiency-get-your-ducts-in-a-row/\">Garbage Bag Air Flow Test\u003c/a>. He rides his bike to work year round in Ottawa, and wears suspenders. He has a dry sense of humor and has toppled any lingering stereotype I had about Canadians. He told a crowded room at the ACI meetings in Pittsburgh that the way we live in our houses, the way we use our cars, and the way we travel in the air contribute about equally to our carbon footprints. The way we eat contributes a lot also. A pound of beef is responsible for a heck of a lot of greenhouse gases released. I don’t know if Don is a vegetarian, but I think he probably is.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Jim LaRue\u003c/strong> is a sort-of-retired home performance contractor from Cleveland, Ohio. He designed a really efficient and healthy house for a group of nuns in Ohio and wrote about it for Home Energy. He has also written for the Cleveland Green Building Coalition and for the magazine a \u003ca href=\"http://www.clevelandgbc.org/GreenHome/\">Greening Your Home\u003c/a> series of articles. I don't know anyone who has worked harder to create healthy, efficient, and affordable housing in Cleveland. He's retired but so far no one has noticed.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Linda Wigington\u003c/strong> has been with ACI since its beginning and is now the manager of program design and development. At the ACI Summit on global climate change held at the \u003ca href=\"http://www.pge.com/pec/\">Pacific Energy Center\u003c/a> in San Francisco last summer, which she was instrumental in bringing about, she talked about how she lived one whole winter in her home outside of Pittsburgh while never raising her thermostat above 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
