Feature Producer/ Director credits include “Saving Otter 501” for PBS NATURE and “Let All the Stories Be Told” which aired as part of KQED’s “Truly California” series.",

Some of his Quest stories have been featured in the San Francisco Ocean Film Festival, Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival, United Nations Association Film Festival, the BLUE Ocean Film Festival and the Environmental Film Festival in Washington DC. A 5th generation Bay Area resident and a graduate of St. Mary's College of California, his hobbies include canoeing, snowboarding, wood-working and trying to play the ukulele. He and his family live in Alameda, CA.",

The plane hit a piece of floating trash in the water and flipped, killing the pilot. Nimitz, the Commander of the US Pacific Fleet, and the man for whom the 880 freeway is named, barely climbed out and swam to safety. He ordered afterward that the bay, which had been littered with floating logs, garbage and other refuse since the Gold Rush, be made ship-shape. Ever since then, the Army Corps of Engineers in Sausalito has sent out the USS Racoon and the USS Grizzly, two World War II-era ships, to haul in floating debris to reduce the safety risk to boats and planes. Using cranes, winches and grappling hooks, the crew hauls in more than 100 tons of trash a month. Trash is worst during the winter months when rains wash everything including the kitchen sink into the bay. For those of you who haven't heard, the most important camera on the telescope blew a fuse and is out of commission. At least we're left with one saving grace: Next to the description of the failure on \u003ca href=\"http://hubblesite.org\" target=\"_blank\">NASA’s Hubble web site\u003c/a> is another article on repairs and new instruments planned for the \u003ca href=\"http://hubblesite.org/servicing_mission_4\" target=\"_blank\">next servicing mission\u003c/a> – 18 months from now.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>For my research group in Berkeley, the timing couldn't have been more ironic or more frustrating. We had spent the last two weeks putting together a very large proposal to use this instrument. We were applying for time on the telescope to look for distant supernovae. The proposal was due Friday, Jan. 26, and the very next day \u003ca href=\"http://hubblesite.org/acs/\" target=\"_blank\">the camera had a short circuit\u003c/a>. We all decided to then head for happy hour to drown our tears at Triple Rock Brewery.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Advanced Camera for Surveys was the most widely used of three cameras on Hubble. This camera was used to observe faint distant objects with very high resolution in the same wavelengths that are visible to the eye. The entire image from the camera covered 3 arcminutes on a side, which is about the size of a baseball when viewed from the far end of a football field. This camera served as an upgrade to the still functional camera referred to as WFC2 (affectionately known as wiff-pic), which is much older technology, smaller in size, and significantly degraded since being installed in 1994. The third camera is NICMOS, which takes images of objects in infrared wavelengths, kind of like night-vision goggles. This camera has served as a nice, albeit smaller, complement to the Advanced Camera for Surveys.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The emotions at the lab ran high last week, and I know it’s hard to get physicists to show their emotion, period. It is unfortunate that there are many projects that will have to now go on hold, and others that we can now look to as the trophies of good science data of an instrument that once was. We are threatened on all sides by disasters of our own making including global warming, the imminent collapse of the ocean’s fisheries, and the destruction of the world’s rainforests. That’s why it’s the perfect time for the new California Academy of Sciences to be built in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This beautiful building may be one of a handful in the world with a platinum-level \u003ca href=\"http://www.usgbc.org/DisplayPage.aspx?CategoryID=19\">LEED\u003c/a> certification. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a standard rating system created by the US Green Building Council. As the definitive green certification, a LEED score tells the world how sustainable a building is. The LEED standard measures performance in 5 key construction categories: Site, Water Efficiency, Materials and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality and Innovation and Design Process.Platinum-level certification is its highest honor.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Curiously, the green building movement is leading the modern world in the direction of its more \"primitive\" roots. After all, a couple of hundred years ago all homes were made of materials that rapidly biodegraded into the environment. Sustainable sources of energy, such as water and wind, were used to power grinding mills. But modern times demand more. They demand that a building have a minimal environmental footprint, last hundreds of years AND withstand earthquakes.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The new Academy takes on this challenge. It will be insulated with recycled denim jeans instead of fiberglass. The new building will have a living roof with a million native California plants growing on it. The plants won't need irrigation but will attract and foster local fauna such as hummingbirds and butterflies. The living roof will provide superior insulation, and capture \u003ca href=\"http://www.greywater.com/\">gray water\u003c/a> for use throughout the facility. In the event of an earthquake, huge aquarium tanks throughout the building will act as shock absorbers. Moreover, 100% of the building's steel is recycled and at least 50% of the wood will be sustainably harvested. In short, this is the perfect building to push forward a vision for a more sustainable world.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cem>\u003cstrong>Donovan Rittenbach\u003c/strong> is the Web Manager for the \u003ca href=\"http://www.calacademy.org\" title=\"California Academy of Sciences\">California Academy of Sciences\u003c/a>. Scientists at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View are developing a spacecraft they will deliberately crash into the moon as part of an attempt to find water there.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Early lunar missions found hydrogen, and scientists have speculated that there may be ice in the craters on the south side of the moon. If there is, it would provide a prime spot for astronauts to build a moon base. So, in 2008 NASA will launch a rocket toward the moon to look for it. One craft will break off and circle the moon. The other will smash into the moon's surface at 5,600 miles per hour, sending a plume of debris 40 miles high. At that point, the other craft will fly through the plume, taking measurements from infrared cameras to find the hydrogen. The plume will be so big that amateur astronomers should be able to see it with their telescopes from earth.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The robotic Moon missions are the first steps in NASA's plans to return astronauts to the Moon by 2018 as a steppingstone to going on to Mars. That's interesting. Scientists at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View are developing a spacecraft they will deliberately crash into the moon as part of an attempt to find water there.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Early lunar missions found hydrogen, and scientists have speculated that there may be ice in the craters on the south side of the moon. If there is, it would provide a prime spot for astronauts to build a moon base. So, in 2008 NASA will launch a rocket toward the moon to look for it. One craft will break off and circle the moon. The other will smash into the moon's surface at 5,600 miles per hour, sending a plume of debris 40 miles high. At that point, the other craft will fly through the plume, taking measurements from infrared cameras to find the hydrogen. The plume will be so big that amateur astronomers should be able to see it with their telescopes from earth.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The robotic Moon missions are the first steps in NASA's plans to return astronauts to the Moon by 2018 as a steppingstone to going on to Mars. That's interesting.
