I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. "content": "\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Early word: \u003c/strong>The San Francisco Board of Supervisors' Budget and Finance Committee has approved a revised city offer to host the America's Cup. The package will go before the full Board of Supervisors tomorrow. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The deal approved today would shift the focus of the America's Cup 2013 activities from around Pier 50, south of AT&T Park, to sites at the foot of the Bay Bridge and just below Telegraph Hill. The shift was prompted by the high cost of relocating more than 80 tenants from the Pier 50 neighborhood and by questions over granting the America's Cup backers long-term development rights on the waterfront. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Reports over the weekend said that the BMW-Oracle Racing Team, the Cup defenders who have the right to choose the venue for the 2013 competition, has \u003ca href=\"http://www.baycitizen.org/americas-cup/story/larry-ellisons-team-wants-expensive-cup/\" target=\"_blank\">issued an ultimatum\u003c/a> to the city to approve the original package by December 31 or risk losing the Cup altogether. The threat came from Stephen Barclay, the team's chief operating officer, who suggested that an alternate site was in play.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>That alternate site is Newport, Rhode Island—home of the America's Cup for more than a century before an Australian team won it in 1983. Rhode Island officials \u003ca href=\"http://www.projo.com/news/content/AMERICAS_CUP_NEWPORT_12-13-10_OPLEAE9_v15.503d2f6.html\">were quoted today as saying \u003c/a>they planned to discuss a Cup bid this week with the Golden Gate Yacht Club, BMW-Oracle's sponsoring organization. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi said during the Budget and Finance Committee meeting today he had talked to officials in Newport and confirmed that officials there had already been in contact with the race organizers. Mikarimi was one of those who pushed for the three-member panel to back the proposal to stage the event on the central and northern waterfront. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Mirkarimi said the revised plan will cost the city far less—an estimated $24 million cost to the general fund compared to a $128 million estimate for the southern waterfront plan—and will bring the potentilal of major benefits to the city. Cost is an issue because if people know one thing about Larry Ellison, the deep pockets behind the BMW-Oracle team, it's that he's \u003ca href=\"http://www.forbes.com/wealth/forbes-400/gallery/larry-ellison\" target=\"_blank\">one of the richest men in the world.\u003c/a> \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"We’ve been very sensitive to that,\" Mirkarimi said, \"to make sure that there are no giveaways to billionaires perceived or otherwise unresolved concerns.\" \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Assuming the full Board of Supervisors passes the proposed Cup bid tomorrow, the next steps would be up to BMW-Oracle, acting in the guise of the America's Cup Event Authority. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Peter Stoneberg, an official with the St. Francis Yacht Club who has been working with San Francisco on its bid for the Cup, said the event authority can approve or reject the proposed contract the Budget and Finance Committee passed today. \"Or they can come back with something different. We've been in very close conversations with them, so they know what's coming down the pike.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Will the event authority say yes to San Francisco? Stoneberg suggested that there's more horse-trading ahead.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"It all happens in negotiation, right? We're hoping they see the strong efforts that the budget committee put together today, the evidence of the seriousness of the efforts, and how hard the city is trying to bring the America's Cup here,\" Stoneberg said. \u003c/p>\n\n",

The package will go before the full Board of Supervisors tomorrow. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The deal approved today would shift the focus of the America's Cup 2013 activities from around Pier 50, south of AT&T Park, to sites at the foot of the Bay Bridge and just below Telegraph Hill. The shift was prompted by the high cost of relocating more than 80 tenants from the Pier 50 neighborhood and by questions over granting the America's Cup backers long-term development rights on the waterfront. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Reports over the weekend said that the BMW-Oracle Racing Team, the Cup defenders who have the right to choose the venue for the 2013 competition, has \u003ca href=\"http://www.baycitizen.org/americas-cup/story/larry-ellisons-team-wants-expensive-cup/\" target=\"_blank\">issued an ultimatum\u003c/a> to the city to approve the original package by December 31 or risk losing the Cup altogether. The threat came from Stephen Barclay, the team's chief operating officer, who suggested that an alternate site was in play.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>That alternate site is Newport, Rhode Island—home of the America's Cup for more than a century before an Australian team won it in 1983. Rhode Island officials \u003ca href=\"http://www.projo.com/news/content/AMERICAS_CUP_NEWPORT_12-13-10_OPLEAE9_v15.503d2f6.html\">were quoted today as saying \u003c/a>they planned to discuss a Cup bid this week with the Golden Gate Yacht Club, BMW-Oracle's sponsoring organization. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi said during the Budget and Finance Committee meeting today he had talked to officials in Newport and confirmed that officials there had already been in contact with the race organizers. Mikarimi was one of those who pushed for the three-member panel to back the proposal to stage the event on the central and northern waterfront. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

Cost is an issue because if people know one thing about Larry Ellison, the deep pockets behind the BMW-Oracle team, it's that he's \u003ca href=\"http://www.forbes.com/wealth/forbes-400/gallery/larry-ellison\" target=\"_blank\">one of the richest men in the world.\u003c/a> \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"We’ve been very sensitive to that,\" Mirkarimi said, \"to make sure that there are no giveaways to billionaires perceived or otherwise unresolved concerns.\" \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Assuming the full Board of Supervisors passes the proposed Cup bid tomorrow, the next steps would be up to BMW-Oracle, acting in the guise of the America's Cup Event Authority. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Peter Stoneberg, an official with the St. Francis Yacht Club who has been working with San Francisco on its bid for the Cup, said the event authority can approve or reject the proposed contract the Budget and Finance Committee passed today. \"Or they can come back with something different. We've been in very close conversations with them, so they know what's coming down the pike.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Will the event authority say yes to San Francisco? Stoneberg suggested that there's more horse-trading ahead.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"It all happens in negotiation, right? We're hoping they see the strong efforts that the budget committee put together today, the evidence of the seriousness of the efforts, and how hard the city is trying to bring the America's Cup here,\" Stoneberg said. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003c/div>\u003c/p>",

But my instincts said, \"Eh... ask your editor first!\" So I did... which sparked an intense discussion about verbiage, taste, editorial judgment and (here's where you come in) the nature of our audience.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So... how far is too far?\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I argued that the potentially offensive joke (which did not air; we picked a different one from the monologue that was not risqué) was representative of the joke that got Toomey fired. I didn't mind replacing it with something cleaner, but I felt it necessary to preface that he told three jokes: only one of which “seemed polite enough for public radio.” If we don't air a joke that's even a little raw, then the soundbite wouldn't give context to the behavior that led to the firing. An extract:\n\u003cp>\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\nThe HANC center served an important purpose at the beginning of the recycling movement. Currently, however, the recycling tonnage collected at HANC accounts for only about one-tenth of one percent of San Francisco’s total landfull diversion. It is reasonable to expect that those dedicated recyclers that use the facility will take their material to another existing site for proper handling-whether that means bringing bottles and cans with California redemption value to to another redemption center, or using the city’s robust curbside collection program.\n\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>Well, as you can imagine, the recycling center doesn’t exactly see it that way. On Wednesday, KQED’s Cy Musiker \u003ca href=\"http://www.kqed.org/a/kqednews/RN201012020705\">talked with\u003c/a> HANC Recycling Center head Ed Dunn, who claims that Newsom is targeting HANC because of its opposition to the mayor’s \u003ca href=\"http://sfappeal.com/news/2010/11/haight-voters-rejected-sitlie-but.php\">Sit/Lie proposal\u003c/a> as well as to other administration initiatives. Here is the \u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2010/12/HANCRecycling.mp3\">\u003cstrong>full interview with Dunn\u003c/strong>\u003c/a>, whose father was involved in the founding of the center in 1974. Nevius column\u003c/a> in the Chronicle lays it out in blunt fashion:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\nThe arguments in favor of shutting the place seem obvious. It’s an ugly, noisy industrial plant, totally out of place in Golden Gate Park. Everyone loves recycling, but with bins in every driveway, getting in a car and driving to a center is counter-productive. It is a magnet for the down and out, some of whom use the can and bottle payout as an ATM for booze and drugs, and even raid the neighborhood bins to fill their carts.
