In a newsroom career that began in Chicago in 1972, Dan has worked for \u003cem>The San Francisco Examiner,\u003c/em> Wired and TechTV and has been published in The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, Business 2.0, Salon and elsewhere.\r\n\r\nSince joining KQED in 2007, Dan has reported, edited and produced both radio and online features and breaking news pieces. "bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. Formerly a carpet store, the space now feels like a cross between a museum and your favorite aunt’s living room. In this vast space, historical displays are interspersed with cozy couches and colorful folk art. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The curator of this unique Fruitvale space, Shirley Everett-Dicko, explained Charcoal Park this way: “It’s a product of my passions: collecting, history and barbecue.” She says she opened it because she thought “it would be a creative way of teaching history to our youth.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Everett-Dicko first signed a lease here thinking this would be the new home for the original branch of her family’s popular barbecue restaurant Everett and Jones. They were sitting in front of a computer looking at images of their friend who was killed. Many of the pictures showed Chuy Campos at cultural events with politicians like Barbara Lee and Ignacio De La Fuente. Flowers and votives were on display, and a banner with his picture signed by area businesses hung in front of the traditional Mexican mural that fronts his original business.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Storekeepers up and down the block put up signs with black ribbons reading \"RIP Jesus “Chuy” Campos.\" One of them is Fashion Palace run by Raul Maya. The diminutive store owner sipped a cup of cream-laden coffee in a small Styrofoam cup as he reminisced about his friend, whom he called “Don Chuy.” He also talked about the two times he’s been assaulted in robberies, most recently 3 months ago. He has pictures of himself with bloody head and neck braces, strapped to a guerny.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“I tell Ms. Quan when are they going to do something about it? When someboday is dead? And now I remember what I was talking about with Ms. Quan last month.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“I worry about my people, all the time they pick up the cars…the cars with no lisences but what about the crimes?”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Everybody, every race needs a peace, Anglos a home, Afro-Americano, Asiatic, Latino everybody needs a place to live in peace. The diminutive store owner sipped a cup of cream-laden coffee in a small Styrofoam cup as he reminisced about his friend, whom he called “Don Chuy.” He also talked about the two times he’s been assaulted in robberies, most recently 3 months ago. He has pictures of himself with bloody head and neck braces, strapped to a guerny.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“I tell Ms. Quan when are they going to do something about it? When someboday is dead? Well, Carpenter has posted \u003ca href=\"http://ghosttownfarm.wordpress.com/2011/04/01/april-fools-day/\">an update\u003c/a> on her blog \u003ca href=\"http://ghosttownfarm.wordpress.com/\">Ghost Town Farm\u003c/a>. She says after the uproar over her story in the \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/04/01/MNE81INHVU.DTL\">SF Chronicle\u003c/a>, an Oakland planning official paid her a visit and cleared up the finer points of where zoning and urban farming intersect.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>It turns out that growing any food on an empty lot in the City of Oakland is illegal. But not for long. On April 14th, new urban agriculture laws take effect under the city's \u003ca href=\"http://www2.oaklandnet.com/Government/o/CEDA/o/PlanningZoning/s/LUC/index.htm\">zoning update,\u003c/a> and it will become legal to grow veggies on empty lots.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Carpenter says her chickens, ducks and rabbits will still be illegal, since the new laws don't apply to livestock. But Oakland will revist that issue in 6-8 months. Well, Carpenter has posted \u003ca href=\"http://ghosttownfarm.wordpress.com/2011/04/01/april-fools-day/\">an update\u003c/a> on her blog \u003ca href=\"http://ghosttownfarm.wordpress.com/\">Ghost Town Farm\u003c/a>. She says after the uproar over her story in the \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/04/01/MNE81INHVU.DTL\">SF Chronicle\u003c/a>, an Oakland planning official paid her a visit and cleared up the finer points of where zoning and urban farming intersect.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>It turns out that growing any food on an empty lot in the City of Oakland is illegal. But not for long. On April 14th, new urban agriculture laws take effect under the city's \u003ca href=\"http://www2.oaklandnet.com/Government/o/CEDA/o/PlanningZoning/s/LUC/index.htm\">zoning update,\u003c/a> and it will become legal to grow veggies on empty lots.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Carpenter says her chickens, ducks and rabbits will still be illegal, since the new laws don't apply to livestock. But Oakland will revist that issue in 6-8 months.
