"bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. She got her start in New York City at WNYC and went on to work with the national business program Marketplace, WBUR’s “On Point” and KQED News in San Francisco. Her work has been honored by the LA Press Club and the SF-Peninsula Press Club.\u003c/p>\r\n\r\nRachel has a BA with honors in anthropology from Rice University and did graduate work at NYU.",

It’s about getting people to try an alternate mode of travel in our crowded cityscape. It’s about finding remedies to some of our persistent and seemingly intractable urban ills: traffic congestion, pollution, inefficient use of resources, and all the problems that grow from them. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>With that as preamble, here are a few places to find Bike to Work 2011 events. His relatives in Vallejo said they had no knowledge of the visit. Becker also told the judge that al-Murisi had no baggage and traveled with $47 cash and a pair of sunglasses.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>More details the government laid out before the judge:\u003c/p>\n\u003cul>\n\u003cli>Al-Murisi entered the country on an immigrant visa in January 2010. He confirmed that the family hadn’t know about al-Murisi’s visit, but maintained he was not a threat.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“He’s a normal guy he has no intentions of hurting nobody. I don’t know what happened on the plane,” said al-Moraissi. He went on to say that his cousin’s actions on the plane “didn’t make sense. When I first heard it, I didn’t believe it.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>He did say that his cousin had been a math teacher in Yemen.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In the hearing, Rageh al-Murisi mostly looked downward. He is a slight man and spoke to the judge through an interpreter.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The judge said the maximum penalty included up to 20 years in custody and a maximum $250,000 fine.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>His public defender asked for more time to confer with al-Murisi’s family. The independent analyst calls for major changes to California's plan, including delaying the fast-tracked project and taking control away from the independent board that now oversees that project and shifting that control to the Department of Transportation. Authorities say Almurisi was yelling in the cabin before he approached the flight deck, at which point he was wrestled to the ground by crew and passengers. Almurisi was carrying a Yemeni passport, although it's unclear if he is from Yemen. Named \u003ca href=\"http://www.plsinfo.org/libdispenser\">\u003cstrong>Free 2 Read and Ride\u003c/strong>\u003c/a> and located at the Millbrae Station, it's now serving BART, Caltrain, and SamTrans bus riders. The machine’s been in the station for several weeks with a “Coming Soon” sign on it, but Thursday was the first day it was open for lending.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The device, which sits on the upper level of the station outside the fare gates, holds more than 300 books chosen by Peninsula librarians. Heavy on fiction, mystery, and biography, available books were chosen for wide appeal. The first selection to come up on the “Browse” function was Tony Blair’s autobiography; I spied a P.G. Wodehouse Jeeves novel and a Bay Area guidebook on the list as well. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Wayne Walker of the Peninsula Library System gave me a demonstration. There are two screens: On the left you browse and reserve available books; on the right you check out your selection. But on Tuesday, in conjunction with a board meeting of the Municipal Transportation Authority (MTA), hundreds of them waved signs, filled the seats of the meeting room, and circled City Hall honking their horns, all in protest of new MTA rules that drivers see as patently unfair. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The biggest objection: a five percent fee cabbies now must pony up on every fare paid with a credit card, a payment option they are required to offer. Most small businesses pay somewhere between 2.5%-3% on credit card transactions, and cabbies want to know why they are being charged more. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Additionally, they are upset that at the end of a shift, money from credit card fares—minus the 5% fee—gets deposited in a bank account. They can’t access that money for 24 to 48 hours, and when they do, withdrawal fees often apply.\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Drivers want to be able to pass on these extra costs to passengers, but haven't gotten a fare hike since 2003.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Another oft-repeated complaint was about the new electronic waybill, which is meant to keep better track of where drivers go and how much they get paid for each fare. Drivers don’t want their financial information transmitted through a third party and are worried that info will be sent to the IRS. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>As driver after driver stood in front of the MTA Board to protest, one thing was clear: They may be regulated by the MTA, but they do not feel represented on the board. Many drivers claim the agency does not know the taxi industry and invited board members to drive a cab for a day to see what it's like. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Tariq Mehmood organized the protest. He claims that on average in 2000 a “gate and gas” taxi driver—someone who rents a cab for ten hours--could make $200 per shift. Now the average is somewhere between $100-140 because the cost to rent the cab has gone up, as have gas prices and other fees, while meter rates have not. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Once taxi drivers took over the MTA meeting, there wasn’t much comment from anyone else about why the new regulations were passed. The MTA plans to hold two town hall style meetings on May 11th and 16th for more public comment before their May 17th Board meeting when MTA staff will present on the taxi issues. If no changes come out of that meeting, taxi drivers I spoke to said they would strike until they got at least some of what they demand.\u003c/p>\n\n",

But on Tuesday, in conjunction with a board meeting of the Municipal Transportation Authority (MTA), hundreds of them waved signs, filled the seats of the meeting room, and circled City Hall honking their horns, all in protest of new MTA rules that drivers see as patently unfair. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The biggest objection: a five percent fee cabbies now must pony up on every fare paid with a credit card, a payment option they are required to offer. Most small businesses pay somewhere between 2.5%-3% on credit card transactions, and cabbies want to know why they are being charged more. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Additionally, they are upset that at the end of a shift, money from credit card fares—minus the 5% fee—gets deposited in a bank account. They can’t access that money for 24 to 48 hours, and when they do, withdrawal fees often apply.\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Drivers want to be able to pass on these extra costs to passengers, but haven't gotten a fare hike since 2003.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Another oft-repeated complaint was about the new electronic waybill, which is meant to keep better track of where drivers go and how much they get paid for each fare. Drivers don’t want their financial information transmitted through a third party and are worried that info will be sent to the IRS. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

"content": "\u003cdiv class=\"post-body\">\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>As driver after driver stood in front of the MTA Board to protest, one thing was clear: They may be regulated by the MTA, but they do not feel represented on the board. Many drivers claim the agency does not know the taxi industry and invited board members to drive a cab for a day to see what it's like. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Tariq Mehmood organized the protest. He claims that on average in 2000 a “gate and gas” taxi driver—someone who rents a cab for ten hours--could make $200 per shift. Now the average is somewhere between $100-140 because the cost to rent the cab has gone up, as have gas prices and other fees, while meter rates have not. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Once taxi drivers took over the MTA meeting, there wasn’t much comment from anyone else about why the new regulations were passed. The MTA plans to hold two town hall style meetings on May 11th and 16th for more public comment before their May 17th Board meeting when MTA staff will present on the taxi issues. If no changes come out of that meeting, taxi drivers I spoke to said they would strike until they got at least some of what they demand.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003c/div>\u003c/p>",
