(Photo: Lauren Sommer)\u003c/figcaption>\u003c/figure>\n\u003cp>At both ends of the new tunnel, crews grind rock 24 hours a day. Outside the dig, trucks dump literally tons of material. That’s where you’ll find paleontologist Kristen McCallister, small hammer in hand, sifting through the piles.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“I just pretty much find a big rock or little, depends, and start breaking off the edges,” McCallister says, hammering a piece of siltstone. “We could find a whale in here or little tiny fish bones that are maybe half a centimeter.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Caltrans is drilling through rock layers that were deposited between five and 11 million years ago, during the \u003ca href=\"http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/tertiary/mio.html\">Miocene Epoch\u003c/a>. It’s a time when the Bay Area was home to prehistoric camels, rhinoceros and horses. \u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“We found a wolverine. Not the sort of wolverine you would think about modern day. This wolverine was bigger than a grizzly bear,” says McCallister. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So far, about 2000 fossils have been found, which will end up in UC Berkeley’s Museum of Paleontology. (See \u003ca href=\"http://www.kqed.org/quest/blog/2011/05/26/new-fossils-from-the-caldecott-tunnel/\">photos\u003c/a> here.). McCallister says the fossils provide clues about how animals evolved and what the climate was like. “So you can see how things have changed and possibly how things are going to keep changing.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cfigure id=\"attachment_32123\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"max-width: 276px\">\u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2011/06/fossil4SM.jpg\">\u003cimg loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2011/06/fossil4SM.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"fossil4SM\" width=\"276\" height=\"207\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32123\">\u003c/a>\u003cfigcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Clam fossil from the Miocene Epoch (Photo: Lauren Sommer)\u003c/figcaption>\u003c/figure>\n\u003cp>McCallister says if she’s lucky she can go through about 10 percent of the rock. At first \u003ca href=\"http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist4/caldecott/caldecott_final_ea_eir.htm\">Caltrans agreed\u003c/a> to allow at least two paleontologists on site. But a new report prepared for Caltrans calls for just one. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Pretty unacceptable, put it that way,” says Lanny Fisk with \u003ca href=\"http://www.paleoresource.com/\">PaleoResource Consultants\u003c/a>. Caltrans hired his firm to recover the fossils–preservation work that’s required by state and federal environmental laws. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“One person cannot watch excavations at both ends of the tunnel. That’s resulting in a lot of loss of fossils,” he says. Fisk is also upset because back in December, Caltrans told him to stop preparing, identifying and analyzing the fossils, and hasn’t indicated when that work can continue.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“It’s critical that this project is completed on time and within budget,” says Caltrans spokesperson Ivy Morrison. Morrison says at its core, the project is about road construction. Caltrans has done its best to accommodate the scientists, she says, but there are budget concerns. “It wouldn’t be possible to go through everything, regardless of how many people you have. She [McCallister] is getting representative spoils and that’s adequate.” Morrison says they’re currently tunneling in a rock formation that’s less scientifically relevant, so only one monitor is needed.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Caltrans plans to drill through all the rock formations again, since the bottom half of the tunnel has yet to be excavated. Fossil collection will continue through the fall, until both sides of the tunnel’s top half are joined. Caltrans says it hasn’t decided if the paleontological work will continue after that.\u003c/p>\n\n",

That’s where you’ll find paleontologist Kristen McCallister, small hammer in hand, sifting through the piles.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“I just pretty much find a big rock or little, depends, and start breaking off the edges,” McCallister says, hammering a piece of siltstone. “We could find a whale in here or little tiny fish bones that are maybe half a centimeter.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Caltrans is drilling through rock layers that were deposited between five and 11 million years ago, during the \u003ca href=\"http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/tertiary/mio.html\">Miocene Epoch\u003c/a>. It’s a time when the Bay Area was home to prehistoric camels, rhinoceros and horses. \u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“We found a wolverine. Not the sort of wolverine you would think about modern day. This wolverine was bigger than a grizzly bear,” says McCallister. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

At first \u003ca href=\"http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist4/caldecott/caldecott_final_ea_eir.htm\">Caltrans agreed\u003c/a> to allow at least two paleontologists on site. But a new report prepared for Caltrans calls for just one. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Pretty unacceptable, put it that way,” says Lanny Fisk with \u003ca href=\"http://www.paleoresource.com/\">PaleoResource Consultants\u003c/a>. Caltrans hired his firm to recover the fossils–preservation work that’s required by state and federal environmental laws. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“One person cannot watch excavations at both ends of the tunnel. That’s resulting in a lot of loss of fossils,” he says. Fisk is also upset because back in December, Caltrans told him to stop preparing, identifying and analyzing the fossils, and hasn’t indicated when that work can continue.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“It’s critical that this project is completed on time and within budget,” says Caltrans spokesperson Ivy Morrison. Morrison says at its core, the project is about road construction. Caltrans has done its best to accommodate the scientists, she says, but there are budget concerns. “It wouldn’t be possible to go through everything, regardless of how many people you have. She [McCallister] is getting representative spoils and that’s adequate.” Morrison says they’re currently tunneling in a rock formation that’s less scientifically relevant, so only one monitor is needed.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Caltrans plans to drill through all the rock formations again, since the bottom half of the tunnel has yet to be excavated. Fossil collection will continue through the fall, until both sides of the tunnel’s top half are joined. Caltrans says it hasn’t decided if the paleontological work will continue after that.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003c/div>\u003c/p>",

But that spot features only about a minute of Marman actually talking. Now, KGO has posted the \u003ca href=\"http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/video?id=8198074\">\u003cstrong>raw video\u003c/strong>\u003c/a> of the interview, which lasts nearly 18 minutes of Marman explaining exactly what happened, from his perspective. The San Mateo County DA is still deciding whether to charge Marman with a crime.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003c!--more-->\u003cbr>\nHere’s a partial transcript: \n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>I flew back into town for a funeral, and, a lot of emotional distress. I had a 6 o’clock turnaround flight the next morning. I actually missed that flight and had caught a nine o’clock flight. I was in pajama pants, not street clothes, pajama pants, a windbreaker. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The pajama pants were tied on by a string, not elastic. So where the string was tied, that’s where it was set on my waist. So as I was walking carrying my bags, I had a 12-pound duffel bag and a shoulder bag, and I was carrying my bags through the tunnel behind all the passengers, a ticket taker had followed me down the corridor and she asked me to pull up my pants. I acknowledged her, I said, ‘yes,” I had my (bag) in my hands…so I kind of jumped and tried to pull up my pajama pants, but like I said they were already set by a string so naturally they fell right back to the position. My pants were actually not below my knees, below my buttocks, they were slightly below my waist. But I was in pajama pants, flight clothes. Right as I entered the cabin, the ticket taker, she had went to a flight attendant…as I was taking my seat. So as I took my seat I put my bags away, I sat down, took my seat, and I was ready to go, I was ready to get on the flight. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The flight attendant came to me and asked me if I could step off the plane and go talk to the woman or address the situation. I was real tired, like I said, I was under heavy emotional distress, I’d just lost my best friend, and I was really ready to go back to school and get my life back where I had my plans. So I really didn’t feel like getting up, or I didn’t see the need to get up and leave my seat. I told that flight attendant I really don’t want to get up right now, I’m tired, my best friend had got killed, I just want to catch my flight and be on my way. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>She had left, they had sent someone else to talk to me. I explained again, I didn’t want to get off the plane, I felt like I hadn’t done anything wrong. As I took my seat I pulled up my pajama bottoms and felt like everything was fine. So they sent the pilot and a couple of police officers and tried to ask me to leave the plane. The pilot came to me and the way he talked to me was not forthcoming. He was kind of belligerent, downtalking to me as if I was a child. He was like, ‘you’re gonna pull up your pants, we’re gonna ride on this flight and I’m not going to have any problems out of you.’\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Tension had been building already, I tried to control myself with the captain. I said ‘yes sir, I’m in my seat, my pants are pulled up and we’re ready to go.’ And he had agreed..everything had calmed down. And one of the officers had asked me for my boarding pass. I stated, ‘I wouldn’t be on the plane, officer, if I didn’t have a boarding pass. I’m just like everybody else on this plane.’ I said I’m just like everybody else on this plane, I’m human. And the pilot said, ‘no you’re not, you’re not like everybody else.’ So you know, I’m just like, okay, I just sat back and let everything take its course-\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cem>What do you think he meant when he said that? \u003c/em>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I don’t’ know. I don’t know what he meant. Only the man who said it knows what he meant.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cem>What went through your mind?\u003c/em>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>You know, I was appalled, I was shocked. You know. But I really just-\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cem>You think he was making a racial slur at you?\u003c/em>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I’m not sure. I can’t tell you what the next man is thinking or saying. But he said it, it’s in the past, we’re trying to move forward and handle the situation. But after that, the officer had asked me for my boarding pass. I said, ‘officer, I wouldn’t be on the plane if I didn’t have a boarding pass. I don’t feel a need to show you my boarding pass.’ At that point in time I felt like I was being harassed. They had sent three people to come try to remove me off the plane. I felt like I didn’t do anything wrong, I felt like I paid for my ticket, I paid my fees, I went through the checkpoint and everything all right, security and everything all right. I feel like I didn’t do anything wrong. So why am I being asked to leave my seat, after I complied with the woman – you know I tried but I had my bags in my hand. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But after that whole incident they had sent a sheriff from San Mateo County to come talk to me. He was more forthcoming, he talked to me with a benevolent tone. So I could relate to him and talk to him. He asked me to step off the flight. Because they said they didn’t want me on the flight. I could understand after everything that happened. I said, ‘are you guys going to refund my flight so I can make it back to New Mexico?’ He said ‘yes, we’re going to refund your flight.’\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So I had grabbed my bags off the plane after everybody was evacuated, I had stepped off the plane. As soon as I stepped off the plane an officer approached me and grabbed my wrist. I said ‘excuse me officer I’m not being arrested. You know, we’re walking up to the terminal so I can get on another flight.’ And he was like, ‘no we’re gonna walk you up in handcuffs.’ I ‘m like, ‘I didn’t do anything wrong, why are you arresting me?’ They never mirandized me, they never read me any rights, they never told me why I was being arrested. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So after he grabbed my wrist, I told him I didn’t do anything wrong. I had located the sheriff that had talked to me about walking off the plane. I said, ‘sheriff can I follow you up to the terminal?’ He said yes. As soon as I stepped to follow him, they grabbed my arm from behind me, I pulled my arm forward. You know, because anyone who didn’t commit a crime or felt like they didn’t’ do anything would resist arrest. They didn’t’ tell me why I was being arrested, they didn’t read me any rights, they just started grabbing me and putting me in handcuffs. They put me in leg restraints and a chest restraint, and they carried me down where the baggage carts are, and they detained me. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cem>You know that they booked you on trespassing, that’s the charge? \u003c/em>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I don’t’ see how they book me on trespassing when I’m a paying customer.\u003c/p>\n\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>Marman then spoke about his feelings about sagging pants and his belief that his pants were not unreasonably hanging down. He denied that any of his private parts were showing. From the \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/06/23/BAH01K1EK2.DTL\">\u003cstrong>interview\u003c/strong>\u003c/a>:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>The 65-year-old Phoenix man, who spoke to The Chronicle on the condition that his name not be published, said he was unaware that a photo taken of him wearing ladies’ blue underwear and black stockings at the airport in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on June 9 had thrust him into a debate about racial profiling, travelers’ security and appropriate airline attire.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The man said he works as a business consultant and flies several times a month as a preferred customer on US Airways. He’s flown in scanty female clothing for several years and has put on a sweater or pants the few times an employee has asked, he said.\n\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>“On the condition that his name not be published.” Shy, I guess. From the \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/06/23/BAH01K1EK2.DTL\">\u003cstrong>interview\u003c/strong>\u003c/a>:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>The 65-year-old Phoenix man, who spoke to The Chronicle on the condition that his name not be published, said he was unaware that a photo taken of him wearing ladies’ blue underwear and black stockings at the airport in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on June 9 had thrust him into a debate about racial profiling, travelers’ security and appropriate airline attire.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The man said he works as a business consultant and flies several times a month as a preferred customer on US Airways. He’s flown in scanty female clothing for several years and has put on a sweater or pants the few times an employee has asked, he said.\n\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>“On the condition that his name not be published.” Shy, I guess. Now a passenger on the June 9 flight on which the man flew has sent the pic to media outlets, which are naturally relating it to the infamous “saggy pants” incident. In that confrontation, college football player Deshon Marman was removed from a US Airways flight for not complying with an employee’s request that he pull up his pants, which were hanging low enough to expose his underwear. Marman, a graduate of Lincoln High in San Francisco, is the 20-year-old college football player who was \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/06/17/BA5F1JV3LJ.DTL\">removed\u003c/a> from a US Airways flight at SFO because he allegedly ignored an airline employee's request to pull up sweatpants hanging low enough to expose his underwear.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Chief Deputy DA Wagstaffe explained that Marman has not yet been charged with any crime and that prosecutors will be reviewing the case between now and the July 18 arraignment. He said his office had asked for additional accounts of the incident from airline personnel and passengers.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Police took Marman into custody on suspicion of three crimes: battery on a police officer, a felony, and resisting arrest and trespassing, both misdemeanors. Our best estimate is that delays for trains in both directions will be approximately 20 to 40 minutes on the lines requiring transfers (trains coming from or going toward Dublin or Fremont) and 5 to 10 minutes on the other lines (trains coming from or going toward Richmond or Pittsburg/Bay Point) during the hours listed below.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>During the hours listed below, customers who are traveling from any San Francisco or Peninsula station toward Dublin or Fremont will need to take a Pittsburg/Bay Point-bound train to travel through the Tube.
