"bio": "Kelly Wilkinson is a radio journalist living in San Francisco. You can hear her reporting frequently on KQED FM and \u003ca href=\"http://www.californiareport.org/\">The California Report\u003c/a>. In addition to covering California and Bay Area news, Kelly writes the (mostly) crafty blog \u003ca href=\"http://www.makegrowgather.com/\">Make Grow Gather\u003c/a>. There she chronicles her love of making things like lemon curd from foraged fruit, spray-painted lampshades and cut felt placemats. The projects she creates are regularly picked up by national websites and magazines. Kelly grew up in a renovated barn in Virginia and is constantly trying to bring a little bit of her rural upbringing to her now-urban life. By day, she catches the N-Judah out the front door. By weekend, she tends bees and grows vegetables in the backyard.",

"bio": "Amanda joined KQED Science’s engagement team as a Senior Audience Engagement Strategist in the spring of 2019. She has helped craft messaging around wildfires, the coronavirus pandemic, climate change and many other stories. She has also brought KQED Science to new platforms such as Reddit’s Ask Me Anything series. Prior to joining KQED Science, Amanda spent seven years as an engagement producer with Forum, KQED’s daily live call-in show. She got her start in radio at KALW's weekly call in show, City Visions, before going on to an internship and stint at NPR's Talk of the Nation.\r\n\r\nPrior to journalism, Amanda taught English at Lowell High School. She's a native of Petaluma and currently lives under the \"South San Francisco the Industrial City\" sign in South City. "bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. I also guest host for KQED’s \u003ci>Forum\u003c/i>, as well as the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. • I speak periodically on media, democracy and technology issues, and do voiceover work for documentaries and educational video projects. • Outside of the studio, you'll find me hiking Bay Area trails and whipping up Insta-ready meals in my kitchen. • I do not accept gifts, money, or favors from anyone connected to my reporting, I don't pay people for information, and I do not support or donate to political causes. • I strive to treat the people I report on with fairness, honesty, and respect. Meaning, BART cannot be held responsible for the killing and cannot be sued.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The lawsuit will now focus only on the officers who were present when Grant was killed at the Fruitvale BART station on January 1, 2009: Johannes Mehserle, Marysol Domenici, Jon Woffinden and Emery Knudtson. The suit accuses the BART police officers of excessive force, unlawful detention and a violation of Grant’s civil rights.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003ca href=\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3zUuup31bQ\">Videos\u003c/a> of the incident showed Mehserle and the other officers responding to a fight on the Fruitvale platform. The officers then tried to handcuff him as Grant lay on his stomach unarmed. At that point Mehserle stood behind Grant, pulled out his gun and fired a shot into Grant’s back.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Mehserle was charged with murder, but \u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/2010/11/06/mehserle-sentencing-update/\">found guilty\u003c/a> of voluntary manslaughter, and was sentenced to two years in prison. Mark Ralston/AFP/Getty \u003c/figcaption>\u003c/figure>\n\u003cp>A $50 million civil case about the shooting death of Oscar Grant III can proceed to trial, but without BART, a federal judge ruled Tuesday.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>U.S. District Court \u003ca href=\"http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=5&ved=0CEUQFjAE&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cand.uscourts.gov%2Fmhp&rct=j&q=U.S.%20District%20Court%20Judge%20Marilyn%20Patel%20&ei=x_TKTc3-LZKesQO1tZGSAw&usg=AFQjCNHZQmhsnPIgJIQ5UY3LRnRS6dwp8w&cad=rja\">Judge Marilyn Patel\u003c/a> also said that the lawsuit filed by Oscar Grant’s mother and friends should be decided by a jury.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>However, she dismissed claims that BART failed to properly train its officers and did not properly investigate complaints of excessive force. Meaning, BART cannot be held responsible for the killing and cannot be sued.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The lawsuit will now focus only on the officers who were present when Grant was killed at the Fruitvale BART station on January 1, 2009: Johannes Mehserle, Marysol Domenici, Jon Woffinden and Emery Knudtson. The suit accuses the BART police officers of excessive force, unlawful detention and a violation of Grant’s civil rights.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003ca href=\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3zUuup31bQ\">Videos\u003c/a> of the incident showed Mehserle and the other officers responding to a fight on the Fruitvale platform. The officers then tried to handcuff him as Grant lay on his stomach unarmed. At that point Mehserle stood behind Grant, pulled out his gun and fired a shot into Grant’s back.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",
