"bio": "Dan Brekke is a reporter and editor for KQED News, responsible for coverage of topics ranging from California water issues to the Bay Area's transportation challenges. In a newsroom career that began in Chicago in 1972, Dan has worked for \u003cem>The San Francisco Examiner,\u003c/em> Wired and TechTV and has been published in The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, Business 2.0, Salon and elsewhere.\r\n\r\nSince joining KQED in 2007, Dan has reported, edited and produced both radio and online features and breaking news pieces. He has shared as both editor and reporter in four Society of Professional Journalists Norcal Excellence in Journalism awards and one Edward R. Murrow regional award. "bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. I also guest host for KQED’s \u003ci>Forum\u003c/i>, as well as the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. • I speak periodically on media, democracy and technology issues, and do voiceover work for documentaries and educational video projects. • Outside of the studio, you'll find me hiking Bay Area trails and whipping up Insta-ready meals in my kitchen. • I do not accept gifts, money, or favors from anyone connected to my reporting, I don't pay people for information, and I do not support or donate to political causes. • I strive to treat the people I report on with fairness, honesty, and respect. I also recognize there are often multiple sides to a story and work to verify information through multiple sources and documentation. If I get something wrong, I correct it.",

Blossoms are susceptible to freezing below 28 degrees Fahrenheit and new almonds can be frozen and killed at 30. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>KQED's Central Bureau chief, Sasha Khokha, talked to Vincent Richhuti, a grower with orchards in Fresno and Madera counties. He said he was assessing his crop's condition, but that any damage would show itself soon. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"You can actually take the blossoms off the tree, cut them open with just your finger.And look inside. If it’s green, you’re OK,\" Ricchuti said. \"If it’s black, you’ve got freeze damage.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Farther north, almonds seem to have survived the weekend without obvious harm. Monique Garcia of the Esparto Chamber of Commerce said farmers in the Capay Valley in western Yolo County had reported Monday their trees and blossoms appeared to be fine after the freeze. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Joe Connell, with the University of California Cooperative Extension program in Butte County--that's in the northern Sacramento Valley--said most growers there have \"solid-set\" sprinkler systems for frost protection. There wasn’t a whole lot to play in, but enough that my younger sister and I had a great time. I also remember my science teacher Mr. White (at the now-defunct Ortega Jr. High in Sunnyvale) got the most awesome photo of a fern with snow on it from that same day; I believe it ended up in the yearbook, I’d have to go check. I remember it well because they made such a big deal out of it on the news, showing kids touching the stuff with a reverence usually saved for moon rocks. It was then I realized just how seldom the white stuff falls from the sky. So seldom, in fact, that we have to \u003ca href=\"http://sfciviccenter.blogspot.com/2010/12/gavin-newsoms-snow-party.html\">manufacture\u003c/a> it so the kids can get a taste.
