"bio": "Dan Brekke is a reporter and editor for KQED News, responsible for coverage of topics ranging from California water issues to the Bay Area's transportation challenges. In a newsroom career that began in Chicago in 1972, Dan has worked for \u003cem>The San Francisco Examiner,\u003c/em> Wired and TechTV and has been published in The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, Business 2.0, Salon and elsewhere.\r\n\r\nSince joining KQED in 2007, Dan has reported, edited and produced both radio and online features and breaking news pieces. He has shared as both editor and reporter in four Society of Professional Journalists Norcal Excellence in Journalism awards and one Edward R. Murrow regional award. "bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. I also guest host for KQED’s \u003ci>Forum\u003c/i>, as well as the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. • I speak periodically on media, democracy and technology issues, and do voiceover work for documentaries and educational video projects. • Outside of the studio, you'll find me hiking Bay Area trails and whipping up Insta-ready meals in my kitchen. • I do not accept gifts, money, or favors from anyone connected to my reporting, I don't pay people for information, and I do not support or donate to political causes. • I strive to treat the people I report on with fairness, honesty, and respect. I also recognize there are often multiple sides to a story and work to verify information through multiple sources and documentation. If I get something wrong, I correct it.",

A climate in which demonization of others goes unchallenged and hateful speech is tolerated can lead to such a tragedy. I believe that it is not a coincidence that this calamity has occurred in a state which has legislated discrimination against undocumented persons. This same mean-spirited xenophobia played a major role in the defeat of the Dream Act by legislators in Washington, leaving many exceptionally talented and deserving young people, including our own undocumented students, painfully in limbo with regard to their futures in this country.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>On our own campus, and throughout all the campuses of the University of California, we must continue to work toward a climate of equity and inclusion for all. We must be vigilant to condemn hate speech and acts of vandalism on our campuses by those wanting to promote enmity. We must work to support dialogue about our differences and eschew expressions of demonization of others, including virulent attacks on Israel, anti-Muslim graffiti, racism towards African-Americans, Chicano/Latinos and other underrepresented minority groups, and homophobic acts. Continuing to support our principles of community will ensure a better and safer campus. We must do this now so that our students, as future leaders of this great country, will continue to set the standard for a better and safer nation.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Robert J. Although why the chancellor of the University of California, one Robert J. Birgeneau, feels the need to pontificate on the issue remains a mystery. Perhaps his taxpayer-funded use of office time could have been better spent considering how to extricate his campus from the clutches of union-represented professors who are angry at having to wait until age 55 to retire, instead of 50… or the myriad of other problems facing the UC system.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But no, he used his time, office, and taxpayer money to produce this letter, addressed to all members of the campus community at Berkeley, in which he goes on a nasty political rant even while condemning – you guessed it – nasty political rants! It is a paid government employee, using his power and position to make statements to those under his authority (employees and students) that are (a) vile in their own hatefulness [IRONY ALERT!] and (b) politically exclusive – in other words, conservatives (or those who disagree with him in any way) are not really welcome at the UC. It’s the law of the land and I’m sorry that Mr. Birgeneau doesn’t appreciate the fact that citizens have every right to demonize and offend.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>My simple message to Mr. Birgeneau and others of his ilk who would love to, by force of law, tell me what I can and cannot say or believe.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Ironic, isn’t it, that Mr. Birgeneau bemoans the climate of demonization in America, and then demonizes those who believe that illegal immigration is illegal, even though illegal immigration is, in fact, illegal. The law abiders, for lack of a better term, are mean-spirited xenophobes! According to Mr. Birgeneau, open and rigorous debate equals hateful speech.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So let me get this straight… We’re supposed to be tolerant, but there are certain things we shouldn’t tolerate (a.k.a., any political position with which Mr. Birgeneau disagrees). I get it. It reminds me of a childhood friend who used to make up the rules as we went along to whatever game we were playing to ensure his victory. “Okay, that’s HORSE,” I’d say as the ball swished through the net. “That’s great,” he’d reply. “But we’re playing that the first person to HORSE loses.” Okay then.\n\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>It's not hard to imagine many denizens of this part of the blogosphere having the same reaction as one commenter on \u003ca href=\"http://weaselzippers.us/\">Weasel Zippers\u003c/a>:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"UC at Berkeley. That's where I quit reading.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>On the other hand, reaction closer to home isn't necessarily glowing either. \u003ca href=\"http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local-beat/UC-Berkeley-Chancellor-Interjects-Politics-Into-Arizona-Tragedy-113364259.html\">NBC Bay Area\u003c/a> put it this way today: \u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\u003cem>UC Berkeley Chancellor Interjects Politics Into Arizona Tragedy\u003c/em>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Leave it to a city known nationally more for protesting Marines and debating whether to honor a WikiLeaks' leaker than being home to a world class public university to turn the tragedy in Arizona into a political issue.\n\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>The UC watchdog site \u003ca href=\"http://cloudminder.blogspot.com/2011/01/cal-chancellor-uses-arizona-shooting-to.html\">Cloudminder\u003c/a>, written by university alumni, also criticized the missive:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\nCal Chancellor Birgeneau's recent press release tying the Arizona shootings to the Dream Act made us cringe a little, here's why:\u003cbr>\nIt felt like he was attempting to exploit a national tragedy for the sake of political posturing about the Dream Act for popularity/publicity sake- and it was not necessary. ..\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Birgeneau also would be more credible on the Dream Act issue and his statements like: \"we must continue to work toward a climate of equity and inclusion for all\" if he also directly addressed current demographics on faculty and staff in light of recent and upcoming lay offs, terminations. Where are the numbers on that right now, what is the current state of diversity for faculty and staff at Cal? Why isn't he addressing it directly as Operation Exodus rolls along? Why hasn't this page or this page been updated with current numbers on all race and gender demographics related to workforce diversity? That is the press release he should be distributing regularly and widely. Well, let’s start with the climate in which the “demonization of others goes unchallenged and hateful speech is tolerated.” That “climate” is called “free speech,” protected by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. It’s the law of the land and I’m sorry that Mr. Birgeneau doesn’t appreciate the fact that citizens have every right to demonize and offend.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>My simple message to Mr. Birgeneau and others of his ilk who would love to, by force of law, tell me what I can and cannot say or believe.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Ironic, isn’t it, that Mr. Birgeneau bemoans the climate of demonization in America, and then demonizes those who believe that illegal immigration is illegal, even though illegal immigration is, in fact, illegal. The law abiders, for lack of a better term, are mean-spirited xenophobes! According to Mr. Birgeneau, open and rigorous debate equals hateful speech.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So let me get this straight… We’re supposed to be tolerant, but there are certain things we shouldn’t tolerate (a.k.a., any political position with which Mr. Birgeneau disagrees). I get it. It reminds me of a childhood friend who used to make up the rules as we went along to whatever game we were playing to ensure his victory. “Okay, that’s HORSE,” I’d say as the ball swished through the net. “That’s great,” he’d reply. “But we’re playing that the first person to HORSE loses.” Okay then.\n\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>It's not hard to imagine many denizens of this part of the blogosphere having the same reaction as one commenter on \u003ca href=\"http://weaselzippers.us/\">Weasel Zippers\u003c/a>:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

Where are the numbers on that right now, what is the current state of diversity for faculty and staff at Cal? Why isn't he addressing it directly as Operation Exodus rolls along? Why hasn't this page or this page been updated with current numbers on all race and gender demographics related to workforce diversity? That is the press release he should be distributing regularly and widely. If that info exists - one has to dig pretty hard to find it.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A Cal press release tying the Arizona shooting with the Dream Act today seems ill timed as victims are still in hospital fighting for their lives and the dead have yet to be memorialized or buried.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Make the case - but not in this way.\n\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>Much more about this, I'm fairly certain, to come...\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

The criticism arose from Honig's 1993 conviction in a conflict-of-interest case involving state funds paid to his wife, an education consultant. Honig was originally found guilty of a felony and performed 1,000 hours of community service before the trial judge reduced the offenses to misdemeanors and cut former official's sentence. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>As recently as a Friday afternoon interview with KQED News,, Honig enthusiastically discussed serving again on the board. But today, the governor's office \u003ca href=\"http://blogs.sacbee.com/capitolalertlatest/2011/01/honig-withdraws-name-from-stat.html\" target=\"_blank\">announced\u003c/a> Honig had withdrawn his name for consideration. Pizzo, dean of Stanford’s School of Medicine, got wind of the ProPublica article last week, and he was not pleased. This is evidenced by the following \u003ca href=\"http://deansnewsletter.stanford.edu/archive/12_13_10.html#4\">item\u003c/a> in The Dean’s Newsletter, in which Pizzo implies that excuses he’s heard from some busted docs stretch the bounds of credulity in the same way that a teenager’s not really being clear on that Don’t-Stay-Out-Till-Six-A.M. policy does.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\nAlthough it seems implausible, I suppose it is possible that a Stanford faculty member might still be unaware of the School of Medicine Policies on Academic Industry Relationships. These policies are listed on our available website (see: http://med.stanford.edu/coi/siip/), have been widely disseminated, and I have communicated about them frequently as changes have taken place over years. Here’s just a sampling of some of those communications over years:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>(A list of 17 items follows.)\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Why am I focusing on this issue and some of my past communications about academic industry relations now? In 2010, the Congress passed legislation that requires pharmaceutical companies to disclose all payments to doctors by 2013. Seven pharmaceutical firms are now doing so, and the databases for these companies are publicly available. ProPublica, an independent, non-profit online investigative newsroom that produces journalism in the public interest, has been utilizing these databases and is running a series entitled, Dollars for Docs, What Drug Companies are Paying Your Doctor (http://www.propublica.org/topic/dollars-for-doctors).\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>We have been informed that very shortly, ProPublica will be releasing a new investigation about how pharmaceutical firms have paid academic researchers and clinicians to participate in speakers’ bureaus that market their products. Unfortunately, a small number of our faculty will be highlighted in this article.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Our preliminary investigation suggests that some of the individuals likely to be reported by ProPublica had understandable reasons for confusion about Stanford’s policies and have already addressed them and ceased activities like “speakers’ bureau” participation. \u003cem>Others, though, offered explanations why their activities continued that are difficult if not impossible to reconcile with our policy, and here we have concerns\u003c/em> (emphasis mine).
