Muchas personas aún tienen dudas sobre el impacto que tiene el COVID-19 en sus mascotas. Especialmente después que la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) eliminó la sección donde se establecía que no existe evidencia de que las mascotas pueden ser infectadas por el virus en su página de mitos el 12 de marzo.
El equipo de KQED entrevistó a los veterinarios Dr. Brian H. Bird, director asociado del One Health Institute de UC Davis, y la Dr. Dorries Black de clínica veterinaria Animal Internal Medicine and Specialty Services en San Francisco, sobre algunas de las preguntas más comunes sobre el COVID-19 y las mascotas. ¿Puedo contraer COVID-19 de mi mascota?
CDC: Por el momento no existe evidencia de que los animales tengan un papel importante en la propagación del virus que cause el COVID-19.
Dr. Brian Bird: No es una ruta de transmisión probable, pero estamos aprendiendo más información cada día.
Hay evidencia de que al menos dos perros en Hong Kong dieron positivo intermitente al virus. Estos eran mascotas de pacientes con COVID-19.
¿De alguna manera pudieron haber transmitido el virus e infectar a otras personas? Eso es totalmente desconocido.

¿Mi mascota puede enfermarse de COVID-19?
CDC: CDC no ha recibido ningún reporte de enfermedad por el COVID-19 en mascotas u otros animales. Es necesario hacer más investigación para comprender si es posible, y como es posible, que distintos animales podrían ser impactados por el COVID-19.
Dr. Dorrie Black: En estos momentos, estoy relativamente segura que las mascotas no pueden contraer una enfermedad asociada al COVID-19. Pero el virus del COVID-19 si existe en mascotas: existen virus del COVID-19 en gatos y perros que causan cambios respiratorios e intestinales. ¿Qué precauciones debo de tomar cuando estoy con mi mascota?
Dr Brian Bird: Lavarse la manos propiamente es siempre una buena idea en estos tipos de brote. Después de jugar con su mascota, ya sea un caballo, un perro o una rana, lávese las manos y asegúrese que no se está poniendo alguna otra cosa contagiosa en su boca.
Siempre que pasee a sus perros, use una correa.
He dado positivo al COVID-19. ¿Debo de mantenerne a distancia de mi mascota?
CDC: Si usted está enfermo de COVID-19, ya sea una sospecha o que esté confirmado, debe de restringir su contacto con sus mascotas u otros animales, así como lo haría con los humanos. Aunque no existen casos de mascotas o animales que se hayan enfermado por el COVID-19, es recomendado que las personas portadoras del coronavirus limiten su contacto con animales hasta que exista más información disponible sobre el virus. El distanciamiento ayudará que tanto usted como su mascota se mantengan sanos.
Si es posible, pida a otro miembro de la familia que cuide a su mascota cuando usted está enfermo. Evite contacto con la mascota, esto incluye: acariciar, acurrucarse, dar o recibir besos y lengüetazos, y compartir alimentos. Si es necesario que usted cuide de su mascota o que esté cerca de animales mientras está enfermo, lávese la manos antes y después de la interacción.
Si alguien estornuda en mi mascota, ¿Puedo contraer COVID-19 de su pelaje?
Dr. Dorrie Black: Aqui es donde se pone complicado. Tecnicamente, sí. Si alguien [infectado por COVID-19] tosió sobre tu perro, el virus en esa gota puede sobrevivir alrededor de tres y media a cuatro horas.
Cuando recibimos una mascota, mis empleados y yo, la limpiamos con un trapo con antivirales o agua y jabón. Limpiamos el pelaje con cuidado y no tocamos la cara de la mascota.
Dr. Brian Bird: Los pocos estudios que están disponibles han colocado [el nuevo coronavirus] en superficies sólidas y han demostrado que el virus se mantiene infeccioso por un periodo de horas hasta un par de días. Hasta lo que yo se, nadie ha realizado un experimento en cabello.
