"content": "\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">In honor of National Poetry Month in April, KQED’s radio show \u003c/span>\u003cem>\u003ca href=\"https://www.kqed.org/forum\">\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">Forum\u003c/span>\u003c/a>\u003c/em>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and the Arts & Culture team \u003ca href=\"https://twitter.com/KQEDarts/status/1375511619191508992?s=20\">invited our readers and listeners \u003c/a>to submit their poems to be shared on air. \u003c/span>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">Out of the 115 original poems we received, 16 were selected to play on KQED’s airwaves every Friday in April. \u003c/span>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">The writers got creative and covered a variety of different topics: friendship, time, California and even bugs getting dressed up for a garden party. The poets come from all over the Bay Area, and included professionals in poetry, amateurs and students (fifth grade to be exact). The youngest poet who submitted is just 10 years old.\u003c/span>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">Below you’ll find the poem text and audio recordings from the broadcast. The world is so large out here, I try my best to take in with a breath.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Standing below, you hand me the planter and within it I can feel the wet grainy heat of the\u003cbr>\nlife struggling to bloom.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“¡Quédate Quieto!” you yell to me in a command, as you prepare, what looks like,\u003cbr>\ngolden empanadas in the kitchen. “¡Estas como un niño baboso! ¡Sentate!”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This loving and necessary ridicule casts you in the light of a different evening. In a house made\u003cbr>\nof white adobe and reddish tiles. Where the smell of fire, steaming earth, and flour are not far away\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Sitting finally, I’m unable to stop laughing even with the warm food in my mouth. I laugh at\u003cbr>\nmyself, at the absurdity around us, and most of all at my inability to stop laughing. My laughter\u003cbr>\ncontinues until I cannot remember laughing and can only recall sobbing sorrowfully. But you are\u003cbr>\nso strong, strong in ways that, sometimes, I am not sure I deserve. The poets come from all over the Bay Area, and included professionals in poetry, amateurs and students (fifth grade to be exact). I laugh at\u003cbr>\nmyself, at the absurdity around us, and most of all at my inability to stop laughing. I guess we are just hungry\u003cbr>\nfor something, anything, that we are truly capable of\u003cbr>\nsinking our teeth into. After all, there is no raw pinky flesh of time\u003cbr>\nto tenderize, no chewy chocolate hours we can melt\u003cbr>\nbeneath our tongues. We spend time just to buy time\u003cbr>\nfor quality time, for some leisure time, for playtime–\u003cbr>\nand that’s all we’re really doing, isn’t it? Folks took to Twitter to compare the return to “normal” to nearly impossible events like \u003c/span>\u003ca href=\"https://twitter.com/kiran_kaurrx/status/1351638739391545345?s=20\">\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">winning the lottery\u003c/span>\u003c/a>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or a \u003c/span>\u003ca href=\"https://twitter.com/ClaryJessica/status/1353137347651641344?s=20\">\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">One Direction reunion.\u003c/span>\u003c/a>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">Throughout the past year, almost all of us have experienced loss, grief, isolation and hopelessness in a way we hadn’t before. Now that people are getting vaccinated and things are starting to reopen, we’re looking to artists to help us imagine a better world without the restraint of COVID-19. \u003c/span>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">KQED Arts & Culture commissioned three local, \u003c/span>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">interdisciplinary\u003c/span>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\"> artists to create original artwork around a central theme of reimagining what the future could look like post-pandemic. Folks took to Twitter to compare the return to “normal” to nearly impossible events like \u003c/span>\u003ca href=\"https://twitter.com/kiran_kaurrx/status/1351638739391545345?s=20\">\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">winning the lottery\u003c/span>\u003c/a>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or a \u003c/span>\u003ca href=\"https://twitter.com/ClaryJessica/status/1353137347651641344?s=20\">\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">One Direction reunion.\u003c/span>\u003c/a>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">Throughout the past year, almost all of us have experienced loss, grief, isolation and hopelessness in a way we hadn’t before. Now that people are getting vaccinated and things are starting to reopen, we’re looking to artists to help us imagine a better world without the restraint of COVID-19. \u003c/span>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">KQED Arts & Culture commissioned three local, \u003c/span>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">interdisciplinary\u003c/span>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\"> artists to create original artwork around a central theme of reimagining what the future could look like post-pandemic. They created a visual piece, a song and a poem that we first shared on our \u003c/span>\u003ca href=\"https://www.instagram.com/kqedarts/\">\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">Instagram\u003c/span>\u003c/a>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
